Thank you for giving me the tools to help my older parents go through their home. It is so jam packed of stuff, but I go over once a week and we go through some boxes. It has been such a great experience for me to have with my mom! ❤
I love your mom. She has a natural sense of humor, and her little comments make me laugh. If you run out of stuff to declutter, I can send you some. I've still got too many knick-knacks.
Now that I get a dopamine high from decluttering and not shopping - I actually don't mind that the decluttering never ends and I'm helping others too! Much more fulfilling than shopping 😊❤
That's a really good point about getting the dopamine from decluttering and not from shopping anymore. I hadn't realized that this is what's going on until I read your post. Now if only I could convince my mom of this. She's a major hoarder and retail therapy shopper. She hasn't made the connection between all of the clutter and stress that it's causing.
@@kathleenj1158 If she's an actual hoarder, therapy is needed but sometimes older people are still unwilling because of the stigma. You can work really hard on your own home and try to encourage her that way. For anyone with a consumption problem part of the way forward to a simpler home is reducing or completing stopping any shopping for anything that aren't necessities. You could try a personal "no shopping challenge" and tell her about it. With the average person - seeing another person's progress is motivating. That's sometimes not the case for hoarders. My mother is a hoarder and it can be like trying to run up a mountain during an avalanche
I relate so much to your Mom, Kathy. For almost 2 months, my Hubby has helped me declutter my borderline hoarder sewing / craft room. I was shocked at all I had in that room. It's been completely cleaned out & painted & as we're reloading things back in there & I'm going through the stuff again & finding more things to declutter. It feels so good to let it go. 😊
I was gone with my daughter on vacation and came back to find this. I always LOVE watching/listening to both of you. It makes my heart happy. Thank you. Have a terrific week. :)
Great job, Kathy. I’m in maintenance mode too, but am always finding something that I’m ready to let go. I won a very cute pink jar full of Hershey’s kisses at baby shower this weekend. I planned to give the candy to my little grand niece and I planned to keep the jar. Then I realized that I don’t need another jar vase and gave it all away. It feels so good to not have to find a place for the jar today! Thanks for the inspiration! 🎉
Loved seeing the way back before pictures - getting rid of a few big things makes such a difference. Totally makes sense to get rid of the spices you don’t like and haven’t used for so long that they expired before some of the grandkids were born! Using them wouldn’t recoup or save money or save the earth anyway, and why suffer using spices you don’t like or that have no flavor? If I have newer spices I don’t like I offer them on my local Buy Nothing group, but no one wants 10 year old spices. Reminds me to declutter them as soon as I realize they’re not my fav.
I love videos with your mom. I am just a couple yrs younger then her and can relate. I am retiring in two months and at that time will be going through our house and doing some de-cluttering. 🇨🇦
This is a great way to turn anything into a habit. Tie something you don't like doing or forget to do, with something you are already doing, and over time it becomes second nature.
Hi Shannon and Kathy - My husband and I sold our home of 35 years, downsized and moved closer to our kids. We both had parents who were keepers so we had lots of practice when it came to decluttering. In my own situation I didn't struggle with sentimental keepsakes but felt guilty getting rid of quality clothing. It was hard but I've whittled my wardrobe way down; nothing in totes or stored away. We moved way too much stuff so it's an ongoing process. Shannon, you get the same look on your face my daughter does when I ask, "Do you want this? It's still good!"
Love you guys! It is so evident how clean and refreshing your mom's house is now. It was nice back in the beginning but so elegant now. 🤗 I'm in maintenance mode but need an intervention regarding my pasta maker that I've never used. My fantasy self wants fresh pasta, my real self has a PB&J half the time for dinner. 😅
I can relate! I'm between your ages and love the videos with you two together! I'm moving from my empty nest 3 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom apartment! I'm excited to declutter another layer of stuff I won't need or have room for!!!
The expired spices 🤣 I can totally relate! I recently purged and replaced my spices. Instead of a large bottle, I replaced them with the smaller bottles, that way hopefully I’ll use them quicker.
Hi, I've been waitung for a video with your Mum to give you an update, if you recall your Mums swedish death cleaning really inspired me to get rid of bags and bags of clothes. Ive been refining my style and have sent off 2 bags to sell, hopefully they like them, if not they're off to the thrift store. I'm almost down to a wardrobe where I wear eveything. If you have too much you forget its there. The big thing is hubby decided to renovate the garage, and got rid of a literal truckload of trash! He was shocked at stuff he'd forgotten he owned, or had deteriorated into uselessness. Next stage is decluttering and reorganising the rest. He's a little overwhelmed, but I've been encouraging him "you'll feel so much lighter", "it looks worse than it actually is". He even rang me up today to tell me they were discussing decluttering on the radio! His style is to get stuck into it and do a whole heap at once. I can do both, a drawer here or cupboard there, to keep things moving, problem is the pile will sit there til hubby gets the motivation... I have to keep the faith i will get my patio back 😂
So much fun to watch you and your mom together and to see how she is digging deeper and seems to be happy . Always enjoy seeing you Shannon buzzing around your home with your family .
I watch the hoarders and the messes on the channel ‘Midwest magic cleaning’ and then go to your channel to find out how to declutter. Both help me keep things in control. Especially get excited when your mom is in videos!
Hello! I have been decluttering quite a bit over the past few weeks and it’s become a daily thing to consider whether I need or want certain items. It feels good to make space and add to my donate pile. Thanks for another fun video! 😊🐦
Love you both! I am the same now as far as I see something I will never use and just declutter it. I really take time making decisions when shopping on whether I will really use something or wear something. Thanks for sharing both of your decluttering journeys and especially the “why” behind the declutter item.❤
Thanks for sharing what you decluttered. Kathy has really done a phenomenal job. Please do a Q and A. Have either of you regretted anything you have decluttered or repurchased anything? What areas would she suggest starting to declutter, first? Have you inspired other family members or friends to decluttered their homes? The two of you together are always my favorite videos..😊
I love your realistic day in the life type videos & thank you Cathy! We’re now seniors & g parents & so encouraging to declutter!! I now always have a declutter box handy!🥳🦋🌷🌷
Love you two together. Gives me the inspiration I need to keep moving forward with my home and all the items in it no longer needed or ever were needed in the first place! lol
Someone will be so thankful for that air purifier. We got a second hand one and it has helped my asthma so much - it even comes on holiday with us now!
@@SavedByGrace713. I'm very grateful that people who aren't using theirs donate them - we could never have afforded to buy one new, and it's literally been the only thing that's kept me out of hospital a couple of times. We are so thankful for the person who chose to get rid of the one we now have!
You guys are an amazing team. Reminds me of my daughter and us❤️ she’s 18yrs old and we have this incredible bond ( she’s our only child though) I always sense so much love in the videos with your mum❤️❤️❤️
Your mom is absolutely delightful! I love her sense of humor. Major kudos to your parents for their decluttering accomplishment! Before and after images are amazing.
I keep instructions for all my appliances, if I declutter I always make sure to include those instructions. You two are so much fun, thank you for sharing your lives!

I do have to say that there is nothing wrong with old spices in general. They only possibly lose their potency but don't taste bad.
Make sure that you check all your spices online because information has come out that a lot of the name brands have heavy metals in them. Especially cinnamon. Make sure you get organic!
Thanks for the info!
