I came across a quote that is something along the lines of "Nothing turns you into a minimalist faster than having to clean out your family home." I had to clean up my family home twice. It has changed me forever. It is such a gift you and your mom are giving to your loved ones. Happy Mother's Day to you both and savor your time with each other- you are so blessed ❤!
I've helped older friends Swedish death clean and I couldn't believe we got rid of 7 van loads of things from one home. I think it definitely has inspired me to start the process earlier.
Yes so true I just had to make a trip to another state for family check in and the state of both my parents' homes (divorced) left me in such a state of terror that I literary threw up knowing that very soon this overstuffed hording situation will be left for me to have to deal with X2 because my sister is someone who never helps with anything that is actual work. I have been decluttering my stuff for several years because I don't want to leave my kids with a mess I really wish my family weren't so selfish, but they refuse to let anything go and it's just gross now!
This is the style of Q & A's that I like - where the questions are all gathered ahead of time. I don't watch the ones that are presented "live" and you're watching someone while they scroll and try to read incoming questions. Live ones are too time consuming and not that interesting. It's always nice to watch you and your mom together. Great tips as always. TY
The hardest thing for me wasn't an item, it was being honest with myself. I had a bunch of cookie decorating stuff. I hate decorating cookies, but felt it was required as a mother. I had decorated cookies with my children and then grandchildren. I gave it all away and felt relieved. Decluttering gave me permission to figure out what I like to do and how I want to spend my time.
I love your comment "Decluttering gave me permission to figure out what I like to do and how I want to spend my time." I never thought of that, but now I can relate so many things I have decluttered to this thought. So true! Kathy
I have decluttered thousands of items and I can't remember most of what I donated, sold or trashed, unless I go back and look at some photos I took and I don't miss anything and have not repurchased any item. I really like your Q & A's I can't believe your Mom's before and after kitchen, it's so much more inviting and open looking. Nice job ladies! Happy Mother's Day 🌼
I've done the same and am still getting rid of things. I did buy a "Fawlty Towers" DVD on thriftbooks recently to replace the one I decluttered a few years ago. Lol, pro tip, don't declutter John Cleese, you'll regret it. To a lighter life 🥂
I agree. I’ve been decluttering for years with the biggest push being during the pandemic when thousands of items left my house. What do I miss? Two blouses that would fit me now that I lost 100 lbs. Decluttered my kitchen pantry and fridge too! 😊
Burden is such a good word to describe how we feel keeping clutter. When you feel that you have to keep certain things it does feel like a burden. If we have to clean and maintain things it’s just extra work that I don’t have the energy for. For Mother’s Day the best thing I could receive is help decluttering my home.
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day. My mom and I both said we were not going to get each other anything. SO we just spent the day together relaxing and that was better than adding more to our homes.
@@shannontorrens1thank you Shannon I had a very nice Mother’s Day. My husband took my mother and I out for lunch. We gave eachother money to pay for our mani/pedis that we will go and get together. Mom/daughter time is the best. I’m glad you enjoyed time with your mom. She’s a delight.❤️🙏
My husband and I are downsizing to a smaller home. We are a few years younger than your parents and love our home but it’s just a bit too big for what we need now. We have lived here for 23 years and probably made 5 times of what we paid for it. The biggest reason we want to move is just so we have less work to maintain. We have a pool in our current home and a bigger yard to look after. My husband is meticulous about our property and spends much of his time looking after it. I want him to be able to enjoy his retirement and not feel forced to work all the time. Our new home has a much smaller property. We will pay a maintenance fee which will look after our lawn and driveway. As we’re in Canada and we can endure harsh winters he will not have to shovel a three car driveway. It’s a lot even for younger people but when you get into your 60’s it’s just too much. If we lived in California we might think differently. I love my current home but look forward to going into my new home with much less clutter and more time for the two of us to spend together.🥰🙏
That’s why they have the chairs to take you up stairs, which I had to think about when we moved to NC and bought a 2 story. Not there yet but it’s always in the back of the mind. Because your right we bought our house and paid cash for and now if we down sized it would cost more.
You two are great. We just love you. Happy Mother's Day. Yes, most of us live informally now. It makes a huge difference. Simplicity is freedom. I'd never go back.
Shannon, you've inspired me to start wearing my dresses. I usually save them for parties, which I don't go to that often. I decided to just wear them rather than saving them for "good".
Yay! I have been doing the same. I used to save my nice clothes but I don't anymore. I wear dresses all the time around the house. It makes me feel good so why not.
The hardest thing for me to declutter was school yearbooks. Hubs and I both had yearly annuals from 8th grade through college. Plus he had yearbooks for every year he taught school and I had most of my mother's yearbooks. They took up two whole shelves in the bookcase. We just couldn't get rid of them even though we never looked at them. Then we had an unfortunate kitten diarrhea incident that left no book untainted. It didn't take much to decide just to toss them all. I've had a twinge or two of regret over the loss of the college annuals, but overall it's a relief to not have them lurking unused (weighing a ton!) in the bookcase. I'm soooo much happier having the space for other treasures on those shelves! Really, after that, decluttering was a breeze! 10/10 highly recommend! Love when Kathy joins you! ❤❤❤
Oh No! Sometimes when something breaks I tell myself it's the universe saying it was time to declutter that item. Speaking of yearbooks that was a hard one for me to declutter too. I ended up saving one and cut a few pictures out of the other yearbooks. But the good thing is this has stopped me from buying all the elementary school yearbooks that our kids' school sells every year.
Thanks for the reminder on the folding chairs. I have eight. I don’t even know eight people. I’m never going to need them anymore. The most I will ever need is four so thank you. I’m going to declutter four folding chairs.
I really like your plan for your kids homework! I believe that the hours a child already spends in school is enough and when the bell rings at the end of the school day, the child shouldn’t have more homework hanging over their head but should be their free time for play and creativity and definitely shouldn’t cause friction between kids and parents!
OMG, I agree with this so much! I don't think there should be homework. They are in school for 6 hours and that is enough. This is why I don't let the homework destroy our home time and parent-child relationship. I have talked to my child's teacher about this and she knows how I feel and is willing to work with us. They send home 16 pages of homework that is meant to be done in 4 nights! I think it's too much even if it is "easy".
Just watched this video. Love it, learned again, thank you both. I was like you too with my mom. But she isn't there anymore, because I'm 63 now 😊, she would be 97, but think of her every day. Bye bye ⚘🌺 Anjo
We left our 2500 sq ft home because the maintenance became too much work (yard care, snow removal, gutters & roof, etc) We LOVE our 950 sq ft apartment, and have never looked back with regret. Less stuff is more freeing. Also- intentionally living smaller feels satisfying.
You are both so Blessed! I am your Mom's age and my Mom passed on in '89 and I miss her every single day. Loved this video so much!!! Shannon, again your hair is gorgeous! Your Mom is just lovely. I love both of your personalities! Happy Mothers day to you both. Also to all the Mom's watching. 💚💛💜
It’s great to see such a great mother daughter relationship. Honestly it’s healing to see this much love that you have for each other and how much FUN you have together🎉 Thank you guys!❤❤❤
Shannon & Kathy, I had to rewatch to hear Kathy say she's 68. I never would have dreamed that. Kathy, you look so young. I love laughing with my family, too. Great video. 😊
The downsizing problem is similar to the UK, as I have tried in earnest to support my mother either to declutter and then sell her home but because smaller homes are just as expensive as her one large home, she is keeping the stuff!! Even though it takes over her home and most of her spare rooms. Keep up these great declutter videos, they inspire me to declutter more.
Yes! I find the whole downsizing conversation never includes the reality that it doesn't always save money. I am sure you are a great example for your mom =)
Happy Mother’s Day Ladies❣️ I’ve been in my home since ‘95. I’m 65. It’s a 2 story. A couple of years ago we thought maybe downsize 😳. There’s 2 A/C units. We moved our bedroom downstairs & keep the air upstairs at 85 during summer. I’m in FL. I put a heavy curtain in the stairwell on a shower rod. 😁
Yes! Simplify your accounts. My mom had about 20 different accounts when she died. It was so much work for me to close them all. All those forms to fill out and mail. Also, each company had different rules and procedures.
Oh Cathy! When you said separate office and watching own TV shows, I chuckled. Me too! Hubby has his room for tv viewing and headphones. Got to say Shannon that as a mom your mom's age I love the respect and encouragemt. you show to her. Brightens my day.
I thought this was going to be sort of a 'dry' video, but like all your other oness..with you and your mom....this was SO enjoyable. I absolutely love how easy you are with each other and just 'kid-like'....Very refreshing these days!
When it came to trendy clothes and we were buying for the new school year, we told the boys we allocated so many dollars to their clothing and had a list, shoes(runners), t-shirts, jeans, if they wanted the more expensive sneakers, they would have to come up with the balance of $$. Yes, they also had ways to earn extra money. When shopping I sat in one spot and they would go pick out the shirt etc they liked and would model them for us because parents have the final say. ❤
I'll add to the below comment "Nothing turns you into a minimalist faster than having to clean and pack your current home preparing for retirement life!!!" This had solidified that as we move on to our future home... it will be SMALLER!!! Shannon, you and your mom have helped me SO much!!! The two of you are my absolute FAVORITE TH-cam channel!! Your content showing your mom how to declutter and Swedish Death Cleaning has been life changing for me!! I watch you on my TV so never get the opportunity to comment! I think that the action of helping her and knowing she isn't a minimalist helped!! I'm 57 and we are selling our home and buying a small RV to travel for a year, before buying our next home. We have a 15x20 Storage Unit and everything we have left will be in there for now... I even decluttered from it on a visit and decided I didn't need some of the seasonal decor I had!! Bye, Bye!!! hahahah Love you both and you are changing lives!!! PS....Shannon you look absolutely stunning in this video!!! Blessings to both of your families!!!🥰
I am so happy you have been motivated by our videos. That is awesome you have been able to declutter and retire with less stress and stuff. Whenever someone says they watch us on TV it scares me to think about how large our faces are on the TV screen LOL.
I really like the two of you together. 😊You both are so inspiring and it's fun to laugh with you. That dress story is really relateable. I think it is a great idea to give away or change clothes you don't use anymore, but sometimes it does not work out as planned. 😅 If you have an outside area that need some cleaning it might serve as a cloth if you don't sew Barbie clothes or something. 😊 The most struggles I have is with photos and emails. I finally did a folder in my mailbox for advertisement emalis from shops I like, they all get automatically sorted in there. If I actually need to buy something I look in it and see if there is a sail on for example sheets. If not, I wait and check during some weeks. The best thing is that those emails don't clutter my inbox and that I can empty the whole folder in one click. 😊 I wish you all a lovely summer! ❤
I have decluttered to a point. Empty nester. the upstairs is small but have turned it into my craft, storage area. So the downstairs is clutter free for most part. If company coming it ony takes a few minutes to tidy up.
I’m your mom’s age did declutter with my sisters for our parents too late in life for them to be much help and it was a huge task/burden. We all went home after and started in fiercely on our own homes. You are so fun to watch and inspiring. I’m not leaving this burden to our kids.
You have just inspired me to totally clean off my fridge door face. I have been getting rid of my fridge magnets slowly. This was the final push. It looks so much better! Thankyou.
You spoke to so many points! Your mom and I are the same age and have been raised with the same “conditioning “ about stuff. Thank you for being so relatable and motivational!
I started decluttering 1 year ago, and have only had to replace 1 item. A spatula my husband liked using when making tidbits, which he only does in the winter time.
If you like where you live there’s no need to move if stairs become a problem because you can easily buy or rent a stair lift or for a little more investment you can have a lift (elevator) installed. Bathrooms are easily modified for disability access if necessary.
You two are such a bright spot. I love watching your videos. Your mom has a great sense of humor - in addition to nice hair and smile, lol!! It’s nice having the mother-daughter perspective. I’m closer to your mom’s age so I can relate to her. And younger women can relate to Shannon. But you both are a delight! PS (Shannon you have great hair too!)
Hallelujah you don't have stuff on your refrigerator door anymore! It's so triggering when I visit someone else' s house and they have crap (sorry) hanging on the fridge. I have NEVER put anything on the fridge because I find the visual clutter to be overwhelming and distracting from the cleanliness and organization of an otherwise clean and clear room. And Shannon, I admire you for your sticking to the confines of your space as the indicator of when you have 'enough'. Many people falsely believe that their space is too small when the reality is that you have too much for your space if you "need" to put things in a different room, a bin or basket. Your space dictates how much is enough, and when you've filled that space, then you need to stop and get rid of things, not find new places to put them/hide them.
Congratulations on your 100K subscribers. I’ve been watching you for a while now. I can relate to both of you. I’m very close to your mom’s age and I have a daughter in her 40’s. Just love watching you and your mom.
I had my oldest grandson today hes an adorable 5 year old he had a wee teddy with him and said it needs a stitch....so i got the needle and thread and sewed the hole, he loves his wee teddies
I see you read Marian Keyes. She's great. As usual, I really enjoyed watching the two of you. Your mom is so open and willing to tell us the stumbles she had on the way to where she is now. Oh, and she's gorgeous as is her daughter.
I watched the entire video, and the last question was the one that got to me. I would love to be close to my mother. That’s something I’ve always wanted, and now… it’s too late. 😢
Love you and your mum chatting. ..and Congratulations on reaching 100K!.. very well deserved! Question.. where do you keep your eg Christmas decor, camping, skiing, sport gear eg bikes, gardening and DIY tools?.. if you keep EVERYTHING in the house? ... I have a garden shed for garden tools and bikes, cupboard under the stairs for tools and some Christmas decor... but some is in the attic, as is my skiing, snorking, camping stuff and suitcases... I would LOVE to have nothing in my attic.. but I don't see anywhere else I could keep it in the main house?...where do you keep this kind of stuff?
We actually have enough room in my youngest son's closet (the very top part) to store our Christmas decorations. We do have a garage, but that is used for a lot of different things like my husbands work shop and laundry room. But we are still able to store a lot of stuff in there. Our suitcases are also in a closet in our hall. I guess because we have downsized so much of our stuff we have more room in regular closets to store stuff.
@@shannontorrens1 thanks 🙂. My clothes closets are 50% the size of yours and have all our clothes and extra blankets in..so no room for everything else. I did notice, in one video, you brought in Xmas decor eg wreath etc from an outside/garage location. There is no way our downhill skis, helmets, ski boots etc would fit in our clothes waredrobes.. neither would our snorkling gear, canoe, or camping gear.. tents, chairs, table, cooking equipment etc.. But I guess my attic is like your garage (I don't have a garage)... oh well.. will just have to stick to my attic.. which I hate having to use though!😭
Very fun to watch! Love you and Kathy together, Shannon. You have an awesome relationship and that is so lovely to see. Also, lots of good information. ♥♥♥
Photos- I broke down and bought the Plustek Photo Scanner from Amazon ($199 now). I had scanned a bunch with a flatbed scanner but that is slow going. The Plustek is life changing. Super easy, fast, and great image quality. The software lets you enhance the resulting electronic image if you want, which I’ve done for a few old photos where the paper photo quality was really bad. I would definitely recommend for big scanning jobs.
Congratulations on reaching 100K subscribers! I’ve done a lot of decluttering and the biggest change for me is that I think much more carefully now before I buy anything. I usually don’t really need it! I loved this video so much. I’m going to watch it again tomorrow! Happy Mother’s Day to both of you! 🌹 🌹
You and your Mom have been such a positive influence on my own decluttering journey.❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing your tips tricks and experiences!!! Happy Mother's Day!!!❤🙏🏻🌸🌺🌿
Thank you Ladies! Let's talk about resources for getting rid of things. We have some resale shops but with so many folks delcuttering, they have become more selective. I also want to find out about more textile recycling. There are days I just want to fill up garbage bags, throw stuff out and let it be someone else's problem but I just can't! Thoughts?!
Love you and your mom. You talked about letting go of old artwork. I am an artist who does many mediums. Art supplies are my clutter. I love them all. I need to part with some to fit into my small space. How do you handle your own art supplies?
Hi Kathy & Shannon, watching you girls make my day....I'm living in Europa,. Id say that I'm more frugal in me 50's . Everything changes even meaning in life and that's ok.Simplifying makes you healthier .... Hope you all mothers had a wonderful Mothers day...take care of one another 🙋♀️ Angie ♥️

I wish my relationship with my mom was like yours. Happy Mother's Day!
Blessings to you, Amy. Such things 'prick' the heart. X G Ire
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day too.
I enjoy reading and coffee time so I am with both of you.
I wish you all a lovely summer! ❤
Congratulations on 100 K. I’m so surprised that you don’t have double or triple that. Awesome channel and I also love the videos with your mom!
Thank you!
I have decluttered to a point. Empty nester. the upstairs is small but have turned it into my craft, storage area. So the downstairs is clutter free for most part. If company coming it ony takes a few minutes to tidy up.
Happy Mother’s Day to both of u beautiful ladies and congrats on 100 K subscribers. You deserve it. I love your channel.❤😊
Thank you so much 🤗
I’m your mom’s age did declutter with my sisters for our parents too late in life for them to be much help and it was a huge task/burden.
Thankyou.
I appreciate your firm, sensible---yet, loving---parenting skills. Keep up the good work
You spoke to so many points! Your mom and I are the same age and have been raised with the same “conditioning “ about stuff.
Thank you for being so relatable and motivational!
Thank you!
Happy Mother’s Day. I love your Mom too. And you!
Thanks so much
Happy Mother's Day to one of my FAVORITE TH-cam ladies!🥰
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.
Congratulations on your 100K - you deserve it. Love both you and your mom. I really do enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much!
I enjoyed this so much. You all are my favorite decluttering friends!
5:57 YES! We also live in southern Cali & are looking to downsize...we are going to have to pay double what we paid for our house just 7 years ago!😮 😭
Just love love love when you guys do your videos together!!!!!
I sent my mom one of your videos and she has started decluttering her things too. It is wonderful!
Thank you!
I started decluttering 1 year ago, and have only had to replace 1 item. A spatula my husband liked using when making tidbits, which he only does in the winter time.
I love how close you two are, you are like my daughter and I. You are inspirational and real.❤
For parties I have enough plates and silverware & table cloths it’s less expensive and more environmentally friendly
Seems a waste of of space for “party” items.
Thank you so much! My hair was a little big in this video LOL.
What an amazing blessing you are in one another’s lives!
Congratulations on your 100K subscribers. I’ve been watching you for a while now. I can relate to both of you. I’m very close to your mom’s age and I have a daughter in her 40’s. Just love watching you and your mom.
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day. Thank you!
I had my oldest grandson today hes an adorable 5 year old he had a wee teddy with him and said it needs a stitch....so i got the needle and thread and sewed the hole, he loves his wee teddies
And thank you for answering my question!😊
Thank you for your videos. I enjoy seeing your relationship with your mom. I also have a wonderful relationship with my daughter. I'm so blessed.
I see you read Marian Keyes. She's great. As usual, I really enjoyed watching the two of you. Your mom is so open and willing to tell us the stumbles she had on the way to where she is now. Oh, and she's gorgeous as is her daughter.
Happy Mother’s Day! You two are so blessed to have each other. I enjoy your interactions. Reminds me of my daughter and I. ❤
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.
Happy Mother's Day ❤❤
I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.
Shannon your hair looks lovely today❤
Thank you!
Congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers!!!
Thank you so much 😀
I love when both your mom and you are on together.😊
I watched the entire video, and the last question was the one that got to me. I would love to be close to my mother. That’s something I’ve always wanted, and now… it’s too late. 😢
❤
Shannon and Cathy, this was quite wonderful. Thank you so much for taking the time to this.
Cheers
Photos- I broke down and bought the Plustek Photo Scanner from Amazon ($199 now). I had scanned a bunch with a flatbed scanner but that is slow going. The Plustek is life changing. Super easy, fast, and great image quality. The software lets you enhance the resulting electronic image if you want, which I’ve done for a few old photos where the paper photo quality was really bad. I would definitely recommend for big scanning jobs.
I am going to try an APP on my iPhone for a small old photo job. 🤞🏻
That’s ME, with the altering/repairing clothes that I should just dump, prior to wasting time & energy destroying! Yup! I’m the creative type!
🤣😂🤣
You and your Mom have been such a positive influence on my own decluttering journey.❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing your tips tricks and experiences!!! Happy Mother's Day!!!❤🙏🏻🌸🌺🌿
You guys are the cutest and funnest 💗
Thank you Ladies! Let's talk about resources for getting rid of things. We have some resale shops but with so many folks delcuttering, they have become more selective. I also want to find out about more textile recycling. There are days I just want to fill up garbage bags, throw stuff out and let it be someone else's problem but I just can't! Thoughts?!
You 2 are so good together! Thank you for your inspiration! ❤
I love you ladies…..happy belated Mothers Day to both of you 💐😊❤️
Love you and your mom. You talked about letting go of old artwork. I am an artist who does many mediums. Art supplies are my clutter. I love them all. I need to part with some to fit into my small space. How do you handle your own art supplies?
Congratulations on 100,000! Glad to be one of them.
