    The H&T and smoke devices would be the perfect things to add into a 3D printing enclosure. You could monitor temperature, and also keep an eye on things in case of a catastrophic failure via thermal runaway.

    I turn down the house thermostat to the 60's at night in the winter and use a small plug-in heater in the bedroom to save power/money. As a result, when the heat goes up automatically in the morning, the bedroom gets way too hot. The heater has a thermostat, but it's a simple slider with no markings, and it's one of those portable oil filled radiators that it takes a while to cool off. The Shelly H&T would give me much better control over this thing, and let me figure out the best time in the morning to turn it off.

    Another option for humidity and temperature are the small ESP8266 DHT11 modules on eBay from China. About $4 each. Can load Tasmota on them or write your own firmware (I wrote firmware which can report via SNMP and HTTP JSON) and they are easily powered by 5V. Only thing I've found is that you need to move the DHT11 off of the board with a short length of wire, otherwise you end up measuring the temperature of the board, not the room.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I've added DHT11 and DHT22 sensors to a few of my projects and have had decent success. I think the advantage of the H&T is that it keeps the wifi off completely until it needs to send an update so battery life is significantly increased.
      I 100% agree that there are cheaper options if you're planning on plugging them in.

    Carbon Monoxide is generally heavier than air, and detectors for it are typically mounted close to the floor. It wouldn't make sense to bundle CO detection into a smoke detector, which is typically mounted at the highest point of the ceiling. Shelly's decision to keep the two devices separate makes sense in that regard. Just my $0.02.

    • @BartomiejLechowicz
      @BartomiejLechowicz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately you are wrong, carbon monoxide is lighter than air and diffuses evenly throughout the room.

    • @portwolf2293
      @portwolf2293 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BartomiejLechowicz I would recommend 02 monitors. Because you can have other gasses displacing oxygen in a home like natural gas and propane, you want to make sure your 02 isn't dipping below 20-21‰.
      And you can use the information to control an HRV or ERV and even other forms of ventilation such as automatically opening windows and staring an high volume central ventilation fan.
      I'm industrial fire brigade and we work and train with the fire department. 02 monitoring is our go to for confined space entry & rescue.

When the shelly smoke sensors is "just an addition" to your already existing (and complient) smoke sensors, did you ever concider to capture the 433MHz messages with a DIY device? e.g. D1mini + RF-Module? (I would be very much interessted in such a video. :-))

  • @rustyyoudontneedhislastnam7900
    @rustyyoudontneedhislastnam7900 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just thinking that as long as you set up mqtt properly on tasmota for each of the smoke detectors or whatever you update the firmware with, you could make each of the smoke detectors a subscriber to their own feeds that get updated by NodeRed so that if one detects, all associated alarms alert as well. At that point you would need to know what the interconnect protocol is for the wired smoke alarms to be able to trigger those to go off as well. I presume this would be much less of an issue with a retrofit of existing battery operated detectors. The down side of having the smoke detector checking the feed would be the hit on battery life.
    Do the devices send mqtt messages for battery level so that you can track that, and have events set up in Node Red to notify you when batteries need to be replaced?
    For the H&T, wondering if the drain on the battery in the freezer is impacted by the temperature as well. I'm aware that some electronics work more efficiently at lower temperatures, so even though the H&T is sensing less than 70%, that 70% may last longer than the 90%. I'm not expecting it though.

  • @timon0x31

    They should have included a micro USB jack for external power. You might pass that by them.
    I didn't have to modify my detectors as I used an UL approved interface supplied by the manufacture, in my case Kidde with voice response. It connects just like any of their detectors and supplies an isolated contact that you can connect to a Z-Wave or any other dry contact interface. Cost about $20 or less for each type.
    In addition Kidde has two versions of this interface. One for smoke and the other for CO. This way you can monitor for each condition. When mine detects smoke it turn off all fan of any kind in the house. When it detects CO it turns on all ventilation fans and when I add it the whole house attic fan. In either case main lights to exit paths are turned on.
    A little side note. When we remodeled I added a magnetic door holder to hold the inside garage door open and ran the smoke detector cable to it. When any smoke or CO alarm goes off a second set of the interfaces releases the door. It's failsafe as the door will also close whenever power drops. The main reason for this was for doing laundry as it make it easier for my wife to carry the laundry to the garage. Without it she kept blocking the door which isn't safe but this way it is.

I would like to use this T&H combined with a smart rule (triggered by the light switch off) to turn on the fan when the humidity is high, and then off when the humidity is low. Will this work? The Shelly's are surely interesting but the software support is below par.
    The app is ok but it is not visible in Google home, at least not in mine. But even if you get it linked to Google, you have to ask Google to 'talk to the Shelly cloud' and subsequently give your commands to the cloud.

If you join their facebook support group you can talk directly with the people making new product decisions. You did not mention the purpose of the H&T until well into the video and even then it was fleeting.and I heard nothing about the smoke.

    Disappointed that have stock to ship to you, yet they claim production delays and no stock to ship out backorders from the launch

      Not sure how that works, how much they keep for "internal stock" vs "production stock". I can tell you my H&T didn't come in a production box (it came in a shelly2 box), so I doubt it was the same stock that will go out to those who ordered.

    smoke sensors that listen are far superior then just another smoke alarm. I guess it is redundancy but the price is far to high.

      You mean sensors that act as a bridge between your installed smoke alarms and your home automation platform using sound? I agree that's a great solution and I think Amazon Echo has a pretty good implementation of it.
