This song is so powerful when performed in a minimalistic setting. This album is about being stripped down to barely anything, and finding strength to keep going. When the vocals are able to stand alone, it just adds that ideal lonely, yet powerful element to it. I love it!

This truly shows how amazing her lyrics and melodies are. Strip a song down to its bare minimum and see if it still stands. I LOVE how Hayley partnered with Joey for this album to utilize the bass as the central instrument of her songs. As a bass player, what I love about Joey's style on this record is that he doesn't try to outshine anyone else or overplay. He creates the rhythms and hooks for the rest of the band to dance around, including Hayley with her vocals. The stuff he's playing here is actually fairly simple patterns, but they're repeated over and over again so they get stuck in your head and create this rhythmical space that just feels right. In my opinion, that's the sign of a truly great bassist - being able to play in the pocket in such a way that you hook people in while letting the others shine.

    • @ericjiajulee8402
      @ericjiajulee8402 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The bass lines are seemingly simple. Easy to figure out what he's doing but I'm amazed by his creativity. He keeps a groove while crafting beautiful harmonies and melodic lines. He comes up with new stuff all the time on his IG. His playing is so distinct I bet a lot of bass players are picking up a thing or two from him.

I don't know if you'll actually see this, Hayley, but I have been thinking about this for a long time and I really just have to get it off my chest.
This song means EVERYTHING to me. Back in January, my mom was diagnosed with lymphoma. She was in the hospital for the entire week before Christmas while they were trying to figure out why she woke up and was temporarily paralyzed from the neck down. She was released on Christmas eve due to being in a stable condition.
Then January came and we were smacked in the face with her diagnosis. Though it was an incredible prognosis, and my mother is the strongest woman on Earth in my eyes(5 kids with no drugs and an army wife), my world started to crumble. She started treatment and everything was going amazing, as well as we could hope!
Then February came.. and my little brother was diagnosed with the same non-genetic cancer that my mom had, and my older brother beat a few years ago.
Again, their cancer is non genetic and pretty damn rare. How does lightning strike three fucking times in the same place?
At this point, my crumbling world completely fell apart. My fight with depression was starting to drag me under the floor at this point. I happened to hear this song during the hardest time in my life, when I didn't even want to live for myself, and I've never had lyrics bring me to my knees before, but your words literally floored me. I couldn't listen to this song for a long time. Every time I had the album playing, I had to skip it because it would bring me to tears. I couldn't believe how much it resonated to my situation. It felt like you were speaking to me.
I can say now, after my mom defeating cancer (FUCKYESSS), This is now my favorite song in the entire world. It reminds me of how our worlds can be a living nightmare, and we are forced to face it head on, and be strong to get through things in our lives and be better and stronger because of them.
Our battle is half won. Mom beat her lymphoma, and Alex, my little brother is right behind her with 2 chemo treatments left followed by 2 weeks of radiation, AND HES DONE!
Again, I don't know if you will see this.. but I couldn't have the words to describe how important this song is to me at this point in my life. Thank you.

If Hayley continues making music into her 80s, I will keep listening. I have already been captivated by her as a person and musician for 15-16 years(I'm mid 30s), what's another 45? Well, it'll make my life a lot more enjoyable at the very least. She is just one of those people and musicians that come around once per generation at best. I hope she finds a way to keep pushing through her struggles because her music and a lot of what she's been through are extremely relatable to a lot of people, including myself. Having suffered a great deal in my own life, (depression, alcoholism, removing toxic people from my life, financial troubles, divorce, a house fire, losing my best friend, my own journey through therapy and self-awareness), I have kind of seen her as a distant friend who struggles just like I have. We need people like her in this world. I'm not religious in any way shape or form, but her and her band have been a constant in my life for so long, and I have always had a great deal of respect for the version of her that we all know. Thank you and please never stop making music. The more Hayley in the world, the better.

    "Leave It Alone"
    Don't nobody tell me
That God don't have a sense of humor
'Cause now that I want to live
Well, everybody around me is dyin'
Now that I finally wanna live
The ones I love are dyin'
Becoming friends with a noose that I made
And I keep trying to untie it
    Make it into something useful
Or maybe hang it through a window pane
Turn it into a fire escape
    It tastes so bitter
    On my tongue
    The truth's a killer
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
    You don't remember
    My name somedays or
    That we're related
    It triggers my worry
Who else am I gonna lose before
    I am ready
    And who's gonna lose me
    It tastes so bitter
    On my tongue
    The truth's a killer
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
    But I can't leave it a-
    If you know love
    You best prepare to grieve
Let it into your open heart and
Then prepare to let it leave
    It tastes so bitter
    The truth's a killer
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone
But I can't leave it alone

I'm amazed by the pure clean sound of Hayley's voice outside the acoustically controlled environment of a studio; it just doesn't occur organically very often. I think we're all (music lovers and afficionados) are quite fortunate to hear someone so wonderfully gracious and special share her talent and her beauty.

Anytime I have ever felt lonely there has always been a song from you that fits into that point in my life.. from middle school to adulthood. I am so grateful to have lived in this time and share this space with you and everyone else who has felt this way. ♥️🧡💛
