    But I'm a sucker for octopuses, first contact, alien languages, and Thomas Nagel. 😏

      @@FIT2BREAD Definitely. I can also appreciate given the subtle slice to decipher. 🐙
      It would have been more evocative if he'd continued forward in the vein of Star Trek's Tamarian language "Sokath, his eyes uncovered/opened" or Arrival-style communications. How would a cephalopod evolve its language patterns further? What history or vision of the future could they share with us?
      Of course, it's painful to watch humanity lose who they are, as another species is coming into its own.

    Good review Michael. I really enjoyed this one, especially the relationship between Ha and Evrim. I also really liked the idea of an A.I. slave ship, as dark as it was.

    It's great being able to listen to your reviews after I've read the book. As you know, i agree with you on this book. It wasn't awful, just not great. I'll have to say that as i read more books this one moves further down the list. My rating of it lowers when i think about how good my recent reads have been. Thank you Michael for being such a good guide on my science fiction journey.

    The most interesting part of the book comes after you read it and imagining how the octopodes viewed events, and humanity in general.

    Nice review. I was really curious what you might think of this book; I’m glad to say that my take on it was similar to yours. I was intrigued by the book, it stands apart from most new SF.

    Just grabbed this from the library. Definitely need more ocean in my sci-fi. Like I absolutely enjoyed that John Wyndham ocean alien book and also Crichton’s Sphere but what other ocean sci fi is there? 20,000 Leagues? I think events over the summer clearly demonstrate the public’s current interest in thrilling undersea stories.

      There's def a few. I really like 20,000 Leagues..if you want something more recent, you might like The Membranes by Chi Ta Wei a really good novella. You'll also get a decent amount of under water in Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor, but not as much as the others

    Love the review! I agree with almost everything you said and love the song at the end!
    My only disagreement is that I found it the tank scene with Altan to be mildly impactful, I got the idea that she was controlling multiple drones at the same time and the overall experience was very draining due to the pure concentration required.
    great video!!

    • @FIT2BREAD
      @FIT2BREAD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Re the drone stuff. .. that early scene, we're you visualizing the ship being a formidable opponent requiring her to use a lot of tactical concentration? I accept that maybe just the act of controlling them for basic function might be difficult, but I also get the sense that later in the book, opposing threats, she had a lot more in her...like she was way more capable than what the early threat required of her...if that makes sense..

    • @rat_bat
      @rat_bat ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FIT2BREAD oh yeah I get what youre saying now! And I actually do agree; that ship wouldn't have been much of an opponent compared to what happens later. Perhaps she needed to use the tank on such a large ship because it was the only way to get access to enough firepower to take it down due to its size. That's just me playing devils advocate, I actually do see your point and agree with it.

    I liked the ideas in this book and the creepy atmosphere. It reminded me of some of Vandermeer’s work. However, the dialogue let me down. It sounded very wooden and unnatural. That may have been intentional, but it did not work for me.

    May have enjoyed it slightly more than you; more focus on octopus culture and less on AI fishing boats would have been appropriate. The abglanz was suggestive of A Scanner Darkly, but superfluous. Most plot points were wrapped up, a solid 8.5.
