Easy Art Journal - Make A Proper Artist's Journal

  • There are so many great journals on the market to fall for, but inevitably, once at home, you're forced to glue pages together, to avoid bleeding markers, or your watercolors send it into waves and buckling. Although cool outside, many just don't have the kind of paper inside that can stand up to wet media, take the weight of heavy objects glued on their pages, be distressed, or make it through the basic banging around inside a hiking backpack.
    This is the easy (maybe even lazy) way to make your own awesome, artist's journal - with Duct (Duck) Tape!! And durable, quality, artist's paper inside. Join me and make a journal for your own or an artist you know. Sorry sketchers! This one is for painters, distressers, markers, and collage journalers - you already have too many choices out there with great covers and paper that can be sketched on.
    Supply List:
    12 sheets 140 lb. watercolor paper (or for makers/mixed media/acrylic painters - Bristol paper) or 6 sheets of each
    .75" Duct Tape (get 2)
    scissors, straight edge and xacto knife
    1 sheet of cardboard or heavy cardstock at least 11" x 17"
    decorative papers to cover or check out making a leather cover for your journal, here:

    I think your video was really very nice and gave us a different way to construct an art journal! Thanks for sharing. Being a cat owner myself...they do love to be apart of everything and help :) On another note...I agree with some of the others, it was very difficult to hear your voice over the music. Outside of that....a great tutorial! I gave you a thumbs up!

    Did you catch the gnomes? Fairies tend to wreck havoc on my crafting space and sometimes evil elves as well. I did love the video and even tho there were times the music overpowered your voice, I could still tell what you were doing and the cat made it clear, the inspections done were okay. It is nice that the cat has a human...lol. You did an awesome job!

    Thank you very much, this is the easiest way I've seen yet to make a journal, and I have lots of duct tape which I use to line the tote bags I make for friends. Mine is thicker, but I can always cut it. Your assistant is very pretty. I've learned that apparently humans need feline supervision to do these things correctly. Tory will occasionally steal a craft supply and hide it under the area rug. I suspect she plans to use it herself later.

    Once I done, but I sewed together the pages in the manner of binding. Then, you can finish at the Japanese style (the seams are visible but the thread used is nice and high quality), or you can put a cover with the rib covering the seams as I done. Cheap and not a loto of work. Thanks for your idea and demonstration very accurate! One caress to your beautiful cat!

    I generally liked this video, not many on making your own art journal (Or just havn't come across more.) I liked the music you played, I like the sound of your voice and I like the simple explanations. And being a human that is owned by kitty cats...loved that yours insisted on helping;) I do sadly have 1 complaint: The music at times was too loud for me to hear what you were saying, even with the wording that explained what you were doing, I still find that very frustrating. Could you do another video without the music?

    Let me start by saying you have a wealth of knowledge on this subject. However I don't think the music is needed. Your sound goes in and out. Also I think color of notes/tip should be a darker color so it will not interfere with the background. I will continue to follow you as I stated you appear to have excellent training.

    Using watercolor paper is such a great idea. Have you thought about using the metal or plastic discs that you can get for the i360 or Levenger planners? I'm going to take your idea of using the heavy paper and the other materials you suggested for the covers but I'm going to use the discs. I use them for all of my other journals (like bullet journal/prayer journal) but had never thought to use this for an art journal. I tried gluing pages together in a book but it just didn't work for me.

    i loved the video, but missed the last part of what you were saying. i really do not understand the use of music in some videos, it just does not always co-ordinate with the volume of the speakers voice. that said you didn't sound lie a "hick" your voice was soft and sweet and that is why the music is too much.
    can you please tell me,what is the wooden (?) wedge with the hole you are using as a bone folder? i prefer not to use bone and I don't like the plastic ones. I like the aesthetics of what you are using!

    • @KaraSkyeVlog
      @KaraSkyeVlog  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +hipretty Thank you for the constructive criticsm - it has helped me with the videos I've made, lately - but not so much this one and this one seems to be the most viewed. I am using a wooden wedge they can be found in the ceramics area of the craft store or at stores for ceramics. Also at the hardware store, but not all hardware stores carry such things.

      G-G- Gaia No duck tape?! I love Spain, but that would be unfortunate. We should send you some. Packing tape won't work it doesn't stick to watercolor paper - I have seen some people use it to mask clouds and then pull it off.

    • @GGGaia
      @GGGaia 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, no duck tape to be had as it just isn't sold here. Thanks for the masking idea using packing tape - I wouldn't have thought of that! I couldn't possibly expect anyone to send me duck tape, as I would imagine it weighs a lot, so postage would be quite a lot. Perhaps they'll eventually bring it to Spain or I'll be able to find a suitable alternative. How about using that aluminium tape found in hardware stores, adding some silicone glue or something to keep it from coming apart? I really want to make a journal like yours. I guess I'll experiment :)

    I have done the gluing of pages together. I have made a journal from 6 enveloped and cards. Cute but quite fragile. I have even taken heavy cardboard and made graduatedly ( I know thats not a word...LOL) smaller and smaller folded pages for a big album type journal. But this looks sturdy, and plenty of pages and the cover looks like it could hold up to decoration too. Great idea !! Will definitely make one once I catch up on other obligations.
