Always memory of awakening in the wee hours of early dawn on a property in the Australian outback , I'd slept in a photography dark room, at a weekend gathering of punks, Goths and this classic song blaring from the outdoor speakers saturating the whole place.
it's the song that got me into them after seeing Nick Cave in that angel movie. But this comment is 3 years old and live shows aren't even a thing at the moment. Sad what the future can bring
Nick Nickson in fairness to Nick, in the recent Solo show (streamed) he was digging out some rarely heard classics and giving them a dusting off - I think he’s just as capable of rediscovering his older work and repurposing it as we hope he will. Recently he did a commentary on the murder ballads record with Blixa and Mick. So they’re clearly all in touch and happy to meet. Who knows... maybe we will see them make new music together again
Hi!! I added this because this one is my favorite version. It disappeared from TH-cam last year, so here it is again. This is my favorite version. Enjoy, all of you fellow freak and brute creations all packed up and on their way ... ~Allison
OMG The Carny is one of my favorite pieces of music from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This version is the best one I've found so far. This man is such a story teller. I put him up there with Leonard Cohen.I don't see the comparison I notice comparing Cave to Tom Waits(not a fan of Waits). I see much more similarity to Cohen. I love Blixa's part in this he is so chill. I believe I see Warren Ellis on accordion and Mick Harvey as well as Conway Savage on Keyboard. This ensemble is an eerie wall of sound and Cave in the middle it's awesome. I've been listening to this man and his many incarnations and changes from about twelve years old on to now.
One wonders, Jim Morrison, had he had the time of life, would he, perhaps solo perhaps with the other Doors, ever ventured into this kinda territory? There some signs on more than one walls, like their liking for Berthold Brecht, soundscapy stuff they done like Unknown Soldier, Texas Radio, the End and so on. After all, this song came only after Nick had had a first run of genius in the Birthday Party. Morrison might ve come up with some brilliance after some pause in the Paris Jazz scene - and he might ve discovered Berlin while in Europe. If only.. Who fell off the trolley, Jim ?
+Niesamowite Rayson It's part of the movie's (diegetic) soundtrack. Solveig Dommartin's character listens to this song in her circus caravan and mutters along the lyrics.
I know what you mean, I suppose - when I went to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in concert, back in June, I only had eyes for him, such was his power - but I can't help but think that, if I'd been lucky enough to have seen the Bad Seeds back in the day when Blixa was with them, I would have made a point of at least stealing a few glances at Blixa. 'Cause I ADORE Blixa; oh truly I do.
This sound is so influenced by Blixa though. It always sounds like the assisi machine with blixa growling and die haut. I love Blixa but Nick has such huge energy
Happy birthday mr Cave, long, long life genius. Thanks for all you make for me from thirty years and more.Always beside you with all my heart in hard moments you passed.
these silly ancient infj guys. I have been listening to nicky here for almost 2 decades and I have never seen an artist better than him. Me and nick met in highschool actually and we became pretty good friends. One of his song is actually based on our friendship. Love ya!
The musicians are: Nick Cave, obviously, Mick Harvey on xylophone, Warren Ellis on accordion, Blixa on guitar and vox, Conway Savage on keys, Thomas Wydler on drums, and Martin Casey on bass.
I just did a video interview for Nick's new album reissues in London with Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (the artists who have been directing Nick's recent music videos). I talked about this song and Red Right Hand for ages and how it reminded me of 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Ray Bradbury - My flesh still crawls when I think about it! The Carny is one of the most inventive pieces of contemporary music out there.
haha. I heard this first when I was a kid (well I'm 18 now) and always thought it sounded like a creepy carnival. Now I know that it's meant to be that way.
I read somewhere that Wim Wenders used this (and "From her to Eternity) in his "Der Himmel über Berlin". Very fitting, though. Bizarre, morbide, strange, weird.
Yes, this song was used in two scenes, one where the character Marion (she is a French trapeze artist in an travelling circus) plays it on her record player, and another where Nick performs it. He also performs from her to eternity in the same scene after it. It’s a really cool film, Wim Wenders is a legend (as is Nick Cave, and the Bad Seeds)
This song played at a bar where I passed out when I graduated from High School. Still the most strange experience of my life.
Sounds like a great experience and memory.
Outstanding. Better than the album version.
Nick Cave is an incredible storyteller !
Always memory of awakening in the wee hours of early dawn on a property in the Australian outback , I'd slept in a photography dark room, at a weekend gathering of punks, Goths and this classic song blaring from the outdoor speakers saturating the whole place.
My god, it's even better than the original... I didn't know that was possible...
It is with Nick Cave
I could listen to this non-stop. So perfect at all possible levels!!
Yo también Fran. Para mí también lo es (perfecta). Cómo la tocan, el toque siniestro...qué banda.
I agree but my hubby, who is a Nick Cave fan also, can't agree with me on this
They haven't performed this live since 1997. Definitely a song i'd really like to see performed by the current lineup.
Completely agree, this is my favorite song they've made and every single time I've seen them live they won't do it.
it's the song that got me into them after seeing Nick Cave in that angel movie.

This will be more likely like why Leonard Cohen never performed live his haunting "Dress Rehearsal Rag".
A masterpiece
ugh his voice. it doesn't matter how scary the song is he's singing...his voice just curls around me and wraps me into a warm hug.
It sounds like a fair bit like John Cale here
An absolute masterpiece...!!!
I’m a kid and thanks to this book I’m reading called Pilo Family Circus, I got into this song. I looked this song up so here I am ^_^
Cause he's Nick Cave ... musician, poet, madman, timeless and unique talent ... that's why ... :)
AlysounRI Thanks for the post!!!
AlysounRI 👌🏼 Perfect definition! Nick Cave is a GOD
thanks for the glitch

It's my favorite version too, aside from the one in Wings of Desire. The one from Paradiso is too frenzied. Glad you like it.
☀👍

Who fell off the trolley, Jim ?
Lol I always compared Nick Cave to Tom Waits and I thought I was the only one😂
Not liking Tom Waits is weird, especially because this song sounds like a lot of Tom Waits songs
This song it´s from another world...it´s just perfect.
My favourite song during summer. Gives me shivers when I need them most :)
awesome performance....it reminds me influence from the david lynch's masterpiece the elephant man..
Blixa is the coolest bloke ever
Wings of Desire
???
+Niesamowite Rayson

+Misducky03 The best movie I ever saw
I know, right!
Solveig Dommartin dancing on Nick Caves performance onstage in the club...
La mia canzone preferita di Mr Cave. Grazie maestro per questo capolavoro
Anche la mia !!
I loved Blixa but Whenever I went the bad seeds concerts, I hardly remembered him - Nick Cave was so powerful and couldn't see anyone else but him.

He od so magnetic

Someone should waltz to this
Canzone magnifica.Performance strepitosa.

Plus Jim Sclavunos on keys also, next to Mick on xylophone
I'm glad he refused to be nominated for MTV best male artist 1996. Nick Cave doesn't need an award for his fans to know how good he is.
Perfect, just perfect! Long live Blixa and Nick ❤
Pure magic - thank you!
I'm loving it love that you've posted it. Absolutely Brilliant. One of his creepiest songs, ooooh shiversss.
THIS SONG TILL THE END AND AFTER
Best version I have heard!
Lay it down dark and thick Nick
So intens & beautiful! He's caring, that's for sure!
The BEST version! Not just another love song!
He is the man you go to so that you don't cringe with today's music😁

sylvia mills Great literary connection!
Maravilloso.
Gothic blues for eternity!!
Genius 😎
All the record is a macabre master piece
N.C. has realised one of his most beautiful songs !!!
Love it. Catchy and tells a story.
a political tale
Thanks for sharing this!! 😀💖🎵🎶🎤
Just excellent. Superb.
for some reason comments are switched off on the other videos. This is like just utterly dark and awesome.
wow!
never heard this version. much better than the original (which was very good)
thanks
Simply the best.
a gem (one of more)
a genius!!!
Beautiful song, so deep
No one tells a story like Nick Cave.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
Hi, it´s fantastic!!! Thank you for adding this version..... Alice
i briefly entered a dimension where Blixa had passed away, and now i'm back in this one. so that's comforting.
AAAH this is class! Blixa as the Boss :D
"il cielo sopra Berlino". Bang!
capolavoro!!!
👏🐮🔭
Even better than the studio version, just wish the audio was available in better quality somewhere
Nick Cave should have been a megastar.
Best video on youtube.
Very hard song to play. Bad seeds and Nick Cave are great musicians
Just beyond measure we live in artless times thankfully our poets and artists are supercharged concentrated lightning bolts.
BLIXA!!!! This is SO good.
love Mick Harvey on the xylophone, or however you spell that word!
I love this, the intensity proves the misery.
this is my favorite!
Fuck, this is awesome.
Bloody excellent; especially the parting comment I must say.
That was killer!
5 people didn't dig sorrow deep enough.
obrigado. muito obrigado. eh passados tantos e tantos ano hey Nick n bad seeds
Poe-perfect.
haha. I heard this first when I was a kid (well I'm 18 now) and always thought it sounded like a creepy carnival. Now I know that it's meant to be that way.
First saw in Movie Himmel über Berlin, than live in Qusrtier Latin in Berlin. Just good memories and legendary
It's wonderful thing
Fantástico 👌
Phenomenal. Even better than he did in Wings of Desire.
Thank you very much!!!!
the sicker-the better!
Brilliant!
the Carny's r a dying breed, God bless ye Carny, keep traveling Strangers...
Reminds me of Jim Morrison in 6/8 time
Strangers in the Night 👻
Wahnsinn, noch eine Nummer geiler als die Studioversion - das ist schon an sich extrem selten. Hood up.
Hello, I don't have anything else but The Carny from these sessions, sadly ...
Sublime!
that organ is so mournful.
Genius. And don't try an tell me Gogol Bordello haven't heard this! Mm? MMMmmm?
Fair point! Also fuck gogol bordello!
hey im a carny,love this!
grande!!!
This is the best Carny.
stupendo
Yeahhhhh !!!
was this written for the wings of desire ?or was wings of desire written around this?
Genius
Nick Cave sounding a bit Tom waits or Tom Waits is sounding a bit like Nick Cave... confusing
@Lucas Chiara Or Captain Beefheart/Zappa
He also sounds like John Cale. Check out “Leaving It Up to You” by him
wasnt nick & bad seeds a lot better when blixia & mick were involved boooo to warren ellis this is a mighty tune bring back blixia ;)
Tom Waits vibes
Mick Harveya, Blixa, najlepszy skład nasion.
A romantic descent into hell.
yar the sound on this is really good. there's posts with ludcrousmillions of views and the sound is poo - bah. So thanks.
Godfather of Goff!

Blixa is super cool in this.
warren on the accordian, wonder if that was the first one he ever played which he found in a garbage heap?!
And Jim Sclavunos(?) on organ :)
