    It was the last procedurally-generated world they made. The world itself was huge, but with limited variables for the algorithm to use, there was a lot of repetition. Too bad they didn’t just increase the number of variables for the next.

    Modded Daggerfall absolutely beats so many other open world experiences to this day, in my opinion.
    Once you start filling the world with more interesting & unique things, add more quests & other activities to do, and overall improve the depth of the game, it really becomes something like no other even more-so than in it's original state.

      Completely agree! Just built a new mod collection for daggerfall that should be available by next week. As big as Daggerfall is, and how impressive it may seem, I am really glad Bethesda went through with the hand made compressed worlds aproach, as it gives the devs a chance to make each location as unique as they can to compensate for the smaller size.

    Big doesn't mean good. Remember Fuel? Took an hour to drive ti the next race

    • @TheServerSupreme
      @TheServerSupreme  หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Daggerfall executed it very well. It was designed with their quest system in mind and added immersion. It also left an amazing sandbox for the modding community to work with.
      So in the vanilla game the wilderness between cities was pretty boring.
      Pretty much just flat land and hundreds of flat trees with very little view distance.
      With modded daggerfall we have roads and trails that connect thousands of cities towns farms plus many more unique locations.
      Very far view distances that show off mountains and scenic landscapes.
      So yes big dosen't mean good.
      But big daggerfall is good.

    • @christophernoneya4635
      @christophernoneya4635 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the key is the giant open world is space between rather than a destination itself like fuel. The idea here is daggerfall has time and resources management, it takes time and resources to move between area even with fast travel so the distances serve a very real purpose.
      Of course there's a mod that really improves this where fast travel only teleports you at ports, otherwise it sort of "fast forwards" you down the road until you reach an encounter, stop to investigate, or reach a pitstop like a town.
      I'd argue even with mods the wilderness itself isn't that interesting but it doesn't have to be, it's what separates the interesting areas like towns and dungeons

      True and no man sky was just a big empty universe at launch. Took years of updates to make it actually fun and by that point they already lost me as a player. Also was missing tons of promised content. They had 20 year better tech and did worse than something that came out in 1996.

      @@TheServerSupreme And this map is a big empty landscape.. what's your point?

    • @TheServerSupreme
      @TheServerSupreme  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@ShyGuy274 My point is people want to knock something that was revolutionary at the time. The game is almost 30 years old and people want to compare it to something that came out 8 years ago that's a huge gap in time and tech, the "best" processor in 1996 was Intel’s Pentium P54CS, which had a version that ran at a speedy 200 MHz on its single core vs in 2016 we had intel quad core processors that ran at 4.0ghz. That's at least 20 times more power per core so at least 80 times more powerful tech. And that's just rough math its probably more than that and were only talking about CPU's. They did the best they could with what they had and made a great game in my opinion. No Mans Sky used the same idea to make this giant "empty" space filled with planets that were bland and had no real flavor to them, they also were missing huge amounts of promised content at launch and overall was a boring game IMO. It may be better now but ill take Daggerfall with Mods over the most recent No Mans Sky any day of the week. This is such a controversial topic that I think its time to make a video about it.

    • @TheServerSupreme
      @TheServerSupreme  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Also the map Isn't just an empty world it had 127 Barbarian Strongholds, 774 Cemetery's, 192 Covens, 273 Crypts, 236 desecrated Temples, 49 dragon dens, 163 giant strongholds, 104 harpy nests, 161 human strongholds, 190 laboratory's 387 mines, 366 Natural caves, 206 Orc Strongholds, 161 prisons, 265 ruined castles, 115 scorpion nests, 144 spider nests, 223 vampire haunts and 96 volcanic caves. A total of 4232 locations that doesn't include towns, villages temples or inns along with other friendly locations. And every one of those locations have a random interior that can range from small to massive so it would be very rare to get the same dungeon twice other than the ones crafted for specific quests like the main story. So its not an "empty" world as so many people like to claim.

    I've said it before I'll say it again. I think TES 6 should have a lot more in common with Daggerfall than it does Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind. While the world of Daggerfall was mostly empty, new technology would allow those areas to be vastly more/better populated. Procedural Content Generation techniques allow artists to build the generic and let randomness give the variety.
    Given the HUGE advances in PCG, I would be more shocked if Bethesda DIDN'T take advantage of it. The only reason I can see them not doing it would be if the creative team just doesn't trust it and would prefer to handcraft everything. In the PCG age the trick is to figure out where to draw the line - for example handcrafted main quests and major faction quests/locations, but then randomize the rest.

      Seems like a bad idea to me. I want everything to build with purpose and care. Everything to have a place in the story and not just be some random thing that will be different in someone else’s game. For Starfield I think it makes more sense cause it’s a bunch of uncolonized planets. For Elder Scrolls though, these are supposed to be places with longstanding history.

    I'll die on the hill that there hasn't been a big game since Daggerfall. People insist that GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 had big worlds. No they don't, for what they represent those are tiny little worlds. But they don't have to be larger. They are effectively packed miniature worlds just big enough for the story, and that's fine. But man, I want someone to have the cojones to do today what Daggerfall tried to do then. I say tried, because man there's a lot of jank to this gem.

    I dunno, I feel like a larger map can kill the desire to explore every nook and cranny, every tiny unique bit of the game's landscape. I would personally prefer TES6 to have a map comparable to that of Morrowind - more compact and with fast travel disabled by default, it being replaced by a well-thought-out public transport system. And I like my dungeons on the smaller side, too, like in Morrowind - Oblivion's infinite labyrinths of dull gray rock and almost no standout stories or NPCs connected to non-quest-related dungeons drove me crazy. Morrowind, with its technical limitations, at least had named NPCs in its dungeons, and that did spice up my experience, even if just a tiny bit. Also, seeing as combat is not the strongest suit of this series, it would be reasonable to make dungeons smaller but filled with riddles and scraps of history, just like in Skyrim.

      Morrowind had the mages guild where you could teleport between guilds in different cities for a price, or more like what you suggested strongholds around the map that would teleport you to the other portal locations but you would have to find all ten keys or "indices" and complete the quest for the master index first.

      They are two different design philosophies. I enjoy both a lot. I enjoy lots of games that have few rando NPCs maybe aside from enemies and people walking along the streets, like Planescape Torment (played for the first time last year), and I enjoy games which are basically all pre-generated like Kenshi or Daggerfall. I still prefer Morrowind, but yeah. They're different kinds of games.

      Yes most of the wilderness is just trees and mountains without additional mods to expand on the wilderness of daggerfall. But as far as quality gos the map is filled with thousands of dungeons and locations to explore that are massive labyrinths inside. Then you have the mages fighters and thieves guilds. Dark brotherhood. The 8 temples of the divines you can join. 10 different knightly orders. 44 different kingdoms with their own reputation system. 14 different witch covers. 9 Vampire clans. Werewolves and much more so quality was there in content and game mechanics. There was even seasons depending on climate of the location you were in and or time of year. And all made with pre-1996 Tech

      I wouldn't say they've completely traded in quantity for quality. Daggerfall has a lot of qualities that the newer (and especially after Morrowind) Elder scrolls never did again.
      I wish we got a game that works similar to Daggerfall, it being an open world, procedurally generated and an actual RPG SIM. But with all the modern techniques available to us. Using LLM's, gameplay tags, and all the new procedural generation systems. We could have a game similar in scope, but with quests, storylines, npc's with personalities as deep as Oblivion.

      Personally I don't care about the world being exceptionally large. Really like the freedom and procedural mechanics of DF though. I don't remember what it's called, but I absolutely love the stories that happen to grow naturally out of just playing a game. Dayz for example doesn't have any quests or a story, but by just playing, surviving, engaging with all of its mechanics, you live your own adventure. The more a game simulates and has mechanics that intertwine, the greater the chance of these natural and personal stories developing.

    I'm starting Daggerfall Unity... And honestly, I'm quite sad that it's TOO big, I'd love to actually walk from town to town, but it's not only a chore (you have to keep opening the map to check if you are facing the right way), the world is mostly empty, literally. Hardly any enemies, no travelling npcs, you won't get any quests either, the few locations you'll find are all huge procedural dungeons that'll take at least an hour to explore and a few dozen mins more if you want to loot it all...
    I'm still loving the freedom it gives to roleplay ofc, but at this point it's probably better to play any of the newer ones with mods (or even ESO if you want the huge map thingy)

      Travel options mod with basic roads lets you travel the roads of daggerfall in accelerated time and will keep you on the road or roads to the location you want for that more immersed feeling. Also allows for the wilderness encounters to happen during trips. You can also turn on smaller dungeons in the DFU options menu. Daggerfall is the easiest to mod in my opinion its basically just drag and drop and some slight load order tweaking.

    They will never do this as the gaming industry is, unfortunately, profit driven but with a short-term and imprudent outlook on the integrity and longevity of IPs. Starfield was the closest thing to the concept of Daggerfall and it failed, largely, as it had no ability to travel roads and the procedurally-generated worlds were barren or repetitive; even more so than Daggerfall. The world and lore in Starfield was extremely sparse, too, and it was not at all rich like Daggerfall.

    Playing Daggerfall for the first time the last few days and i have to say that i now kinda understand why this scale wasnt repeated. Its just too large and spaced out, im a lover of old school RPGs (Morrowind is my all time fav in TES for example) but i can see how this just scale is just completely uneeded for a single player experience. Maybe for a massive open online RPG game, sure that could really work well with 1000s of players, but for one person? or even small scale co op, it just dosent work. I just end up fast travelling everywhere, even with mods and mods to add flavour to the wilderness, theres already too much gameplay with the massive dungeons and questlines to go wandering about in the vast mostly repeating nothing of the world. I think something on the scale of one singular "region" of Daggferall scale could work much better.
    Saying that there is alot native to Daggerfall that really should have been improved and worked on for later titles, climbing, horse combat, buying wagons/boats, merchant systems etc etc. Its a great game but i think the massiveness of its scale, while often talked about, is one of its least interesting parts.

      True the base game wilderness is a bit bare just trees, roads and bumpy earth. But the map is covered with thousands of dungeons and towns to visit, each unique in there own way. The world is designed in a way that no two playthroughs are the same. It's made to be played over and over and each time is its own unique experience, you can join the same guild each playthrough yet get different quests. And even if you did get the same quest in the same location the dungeon would be completely different. Plus now there are mods to fill in all that lovely "empty" space.

      @@lunalumafly I think that's a fair point. In scenarios like these, people will defend things they like and attack things they don't like. In this case, I view Daggerfall more akin to games in space - think Spore, Elite Dangerous - where the actual traveling is pretty homogeneous. In games like Dwarf Fortress or UnReal World, the empty space isn't empty because even trees are useful, but that isn't the case here. There was definitely a time and technical limitation for Daggerfall, but I don't think the dev team would have added anything but random encounters during fast travel.
      I still don't think it's soulless, but I could understand that viewpoint. It was meant to be more of a landscape simulation than something to actively explore. Despite that, I still enjoy using TravelOptions (DFU mod) to speed through the terrain rather than instantly appear. Sometimes it can be pretty, especially near the ocean.

      There is a point though. All that empty space undeniably adds to the atmosphere. I love all TES games but Skyrim doesn't feel like the great province portrayed on the map because you can walk across it in an afternoon. The approach it takes of squishing everything together is good for getting lots of interesting content but in other ways it just doesn't really work for me.
      Daggerfall comes from a time when most RPGs required a certain level of abstraction, the technology wasn't there to render everything that happens physically, and I think a sense of imagination is what's needed to enjoy the game. Daggerfall absolutely encourages imagination with the size of its world. You fast travel, but not like the fast travel in Oblivion onwards, where you teleport to wherever you need to be. In Daggerfall you travel along a path and pay to stay at inns--it costs money to travel. The fact that all the space is real and thst the fast travel represents moving across it just hits _different._ Nothing in the other games can accomplish this for me.
      In a more modern attmept at this kind of game I'd love to have more reason to go out exploring, but even as it is I think the size of the world adds a lot to the game. It gives your journey a real sense of time. It takes days to travel and you can imagine your character braving the roads.

      I always disagree with people on this. I don't take the physical size of a map serious if it is just procedural generated. I have nothing against procedural generation but in daggerfall it was done for inflation. Nobody it traveling the map od faggerfall because of this. Only fast traveling. So from my point of view the map is so small it isn't even able to be traveled upon. Its more of a feature that allows you to see places you can fast travel to. Even the towns them selves can be huge but there just repeated and nothing is actually there besides the guild or store your trying to get to. I love daggerfall and have thousands of hours in it. I just don't believe we should over look the problem because of nostalgia. Daggerfall may be the worlds biggest pizza but there are few toppings. • @TheServerSupreme
      @TheServerSupreme  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tell that to the modding community😁. Yes the base vanilla game is much like a plain cheese pizza a very large cheese pizza, and there is nothing wrong with that some people love it while others just think its plain and boring so you do have valid points in your argument. The point I think was to add realism to the the map itself yes you can say it was a world inflation tactic, but it added legitimacy to the fast travel system itself. Lets say were traveling from point A to point B and the fast travel system says "Hey its going to take 5 days to get here" ok no problem and you arrive there in 5 days game time. Now if the map wasn't made so big and "empty" and you could walk manually from the same point A to point B in lets say 5 minutes that would completely break immersion of the game and ruin other mechanics such as the questing system where almost all quests and jobs have X amount of time to finish it. So numerous game mechanics rely on the fact that the map is so big. Another is the diseases in the game wouldn't be so treacherous if a healer was always 5 minutes away. Also at the time with computer hardware that was available to most people in 1996, if they did fill said world with all kinds of flavor such as bandit camps, wandering animal and creatures, shrines ect. No one would have had the storage space or computing power to run such a game. But now that we do, the modding community has been hard at work adding those finer details to the world to give you a reason to finally travel into the wilderness. Thank you by the way I love video game debates 😆

      That's why you put mods in your Elder Scrolls game just like you have to with every other Elder Scrolls game because they're bare-bones as hell

      People forget that at the time even the best pcs only had a 200mhz single core processor and that was top end power at the time. And 4mb to 8mb video cards sometimes needing 2 different cards one for 2d graphics and one for 3d which was all new tech at the time. I would love to see modern game designers use hardware from 1996 to make a game today and see if they can even pull it off. 😆

      @@TheServerSupreme y’all may have forgotten but I wasn’t quite around to know to then forget I just assumed that cause what old stuff I’ve experienced I mean take Minecraft for example I think the only reason it can “infinite” is cause the relatively simple graphics I mean when it was in beta I could run it on Mac but now not so much I’m just saying with simpler graphics the bigger the game I guess if I’m wrong I’m wrong I’m just making speculation

    Technically Minecraft bedrock edition does not have a world border so you can walk infinitely so it's a biggest map ever

      The vanilla wilderness was pretty boring.
      With nothing but trees for miles untill you reached the next location.
      But now with Unity and mods the wilderness has roads and rivers.
      3d trees and grass that move in the wind.
      Flocks of birds that fly through dynamic sky's and sunlight. As well as wild encounters with animals, other adventurers or even members of the dark brotherhood.

      So true, I started with Morrowind back when it was released on the original xbox, I remember seeing it advertised on Toonami when I was a kid and oh my was I immersed in that game. Then when I went back to try Daggerfall as an adult and had a great time then I added some mods and had an even better time.

      @@killme943 Yeah it wasn't a perfect system. One of the first of its kind which made it very unique but looking back almost 30 years later it seems kind of crazy. It did leave a pretty good sandbox game behind for modders though. And Dagger Fall Unity plus some mods makes for some fun gameplay if your into old school RPG's
