Dr. Heiser has opened up a whole new understanding of the Bible, for me. I have read and studied the Bible for over 4 decades now and I am just beginning to learn how differently some passages are, changing many of the stories, when viewed from the perspective of the people living at the time. He weaves the Bible with the ancient cultures it was written to, with their other ways of looking at things (astrology, Jewish traditions, etc.) and tightens those weaves into a solid rope that not only gives a fullness to the Bible but makes perfect sense. Thank God for Dr. Heiser. I've read a couple of his books and they are works of passion. As he says, nothing he says or writes is new. It's all been peer reviewed. He just takes that work (through at least 1000s of hrs of dry and sometimes dead end research) and brings it together ro not only be informative but an "ENJOYABLY EASY READ". AND YES, DR. HEISER, PLEASE QUOTE ME. I recieved your books through an EXTREMELY generous donation so I don't know where I can go to leave one elsewhere.

The Bible has a few stories involving animals:
- speaking snake (garden of Eden)
- speaking donkey (who saw the angel of the Lord and warned Balaam)
- possessed pigs (demons were commanded to Enter pigs)
- two bears (“executors” of Elisha’s curse)
The conclusion is that animals can be possessed by a spirit or an angel and can talk and do what’s commanded to them.
Interestingly in Catholic tradition it is believed that animals can talk during Christmas.
To me, snake in the garden of Eden could be possessed by Satan and apparently it wasn’t strange to hear speaking animal, neither Adam nor Eve saw this suspicious.
Notice that during the creation days, aquatic-reptilian animals are not mentioned. Why ? At what point were they created ?
In Revelation 16, “three unclean spirits like frogs” are mentioned.
Do the look of aquatic-reptilians animals reflects “the look” of some spirits ?

Here's a thought. If you take a Dragons wings, arms and legs away, it is nothing more than a slithering serpent.
Dragon are more intelligent. Snakes aren’t. They have never been smart. Also notice how the Bible said the serpent instead of serpents and didn’t use the word other.
I think lizards can be considered serpents too.
Genesis 3:1-19
Eating fruit was not the original sin. Adultery was. How could the serpent have a sexual union with Eve? It was only after God cursed it that he became a snake. “Upon thy belly shalt thou go (he didn’t go on his belly before this) and dust thou shalt eat all the days of thy life.” (Genesis 3:14).
Before this, he was more subtle than any beasts (not reptiles) of the field (Genesis 3:1). He could also talk, reason and persuade. (Genesis 3:1-5).
He walked upright, he talked and he was intelligent. He was between the animal kingdom and the human. Satan was in the garden (Ezekiel 28:13-17) and used the Serpent to mix his seed with the woman’s seed. The sin exposing their nakedness was adultery.
Apples didn’t cause them shame; it was the loss of innocence. They didn’t
cover their mouths. The Serpent ate with Eve, then she shared with her husband. Two children were born. One evil and one good. Cain was the son of the devil (John 8:44), the wicked one (1 John 3:12). He was never recorded in the genealogy of Adam. Genealogies do not differ good sons from bad, they are based on the identity of the biological father.
Adam was the son of God (Luke 3:38) and his son was Seth, who took the place of Abel (Genesis 5:3 and Jude 14). Eve is the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20) but Adam was not the father of all living. He knew her for the second time and she had her third son (Genesis 4:24).
JESUS had to be born of a virgin - the Remedy for our sin bypassed the original sin. We are shaped in iniquity and conceived in sin (Psalms 51:5).
Men are typed as trees. (Psalms 1:1-3) Women are typed as a Garden enclosed. (Song of Solomon 4:12) Eve's punishment affected her in childbearing (Genesis 3:16)
The fruit of the Womb are children. (Psalms 127:3)…an adulterous woman, she eateth, and wipeth her mouth…. (Proverbs 30:20)
The idea that Eve ate an apple is a trumped-up doctrine by a church that places no value in the scriptures. Much of the Bible is written in parables and types and shadows, but this is no reason to believe fables and church dogma instead of the Word of God.

Can you explain Genesis 3:1: "Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made"? Also, can you explain Genesis 3:14, where it says that the serpent is "more cursed" than all the cattle, and "more cursed" than every beast of the field." How does the field beast fit into this story?
Read Job when GOD asks Satan where has he been. Satan said i have been going to and from the earth. Then go read Revelation 12:7-10. Then Isaiah 14:12-14. Then back to Revelation 6:13 and Revelation 8:12. Then read Ephesians 6, and see the prophecy of those stars/angels/principalities coming down spoken by Jeremiah 13:18-22. Think about Satan both in the spirit and in the physical. For he is the god of this world working in they who are not saved.
I believe the animals in the Garden could speak, like in Narnia. This is why Eve wasn’t disturbed when the snake spoke to her. But this particular snake must have been possessed by Satan. I think the snake gave permission for Satan to enter it. This is why the animal itself was cursed. Satan is a dragon, and perhaps there was a special affinity between the two. Sometimes I wonder if the animals were created after the likeness of angels, as man is created in the image of God. Maybe this is part of the reason why Satan hated man, because he saw God’s image bearers ruling over his own.

The snake was also cursed by God, the LORD God cursed the serpent in Gen 3:14, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
It seems the snake allowed Satan to posses him and if “crawling on belly” is curse, then that would mean before the curse snake could even have legs and stand - so the snake indeed could reflect the look of the spirit.
Beasts can be demonstrated to be, in some cases, bi-peds that can work with and mate with mankind.
The parable of the wheat and the tares speaks about a corrupt seed placed in the world. It looks like the good seed that Yahweh planted.
Then going back through history, we have groups of people whom were considered "people" until around the 1500's

@@Warlogic12 The serpent would be the king of sheol, the abode of dead - meaning Satan. There's also a connection with Psalm 82, where it says that the evil angels would die like man - which is equivalent to the serpent eating dust.

Super cool, easy for a laymem, such as I to understand and ultimately very enlightening. I have often wonder if the serpent in genesis was more akin to, sort of what we may or may not think of, as what the image of dragon is. I've wondered, if the serpent was this majestic and powerful animal and due to allowing itself to be possessed by satan, that it was punished and became what we've always known as being a snake upon the ground? Great episode and totally makes sense. I don't have to wonder, any longer and I suppose it's all in the books, anyhow.
It couldn’t be because snakes aren’t crafty and it said the serpent instead of serpents. The Bible didn’t even say any other. Just any. Yes God cause a donkey to talk, but Again because God open it’s mouth. When demons posses animals they cause them to go insane.

Not to be the ORIGIN of days, but to MARK (measure) the days. Our mental block stems from the unquestioned assumption that the sun CREATES a day rather than MARKS a day. The celestial bodies are SIGNS of these periods of time, not the generators of those periods of time themselves. The sun, moon, and stars are observable markers (signs) that allow us to observe the passage of the pre-existing segments of time known as days, years, sacred times, and seasons. God created spacetime before he created the sun that exists within spacetime and marks its passage.

Here is my take on the "being" in the Garden of Eden. It was a flying serpent. Whether it was fiery or not, I have no idea but I do believe it was a winged serpent. I will get to why in a moment, but first a bit about Eve. This type of being was either common to Eve or all possibilities were in her mind. This being spoke to her also, so in my mind it was a flying talking serpent. Eve just chats with it. No astonishment or surprise, and fear wasn't even a thing yet but she just has a talk with it. So whether it was a Serephim or not, it could have been a member of God's Heavenly Host (as Satan hadn't turned yet and you would think that an angel of that rank and perfection could have been...) or it could have been an animal that was common then but it was now speaking.... Now, why I think it was a flying serpent? First, that pretty much the definition of a Dragon, which seems to be a common animal throughout the world, and the Bible refers to Satan as "The Dragon" a few times. Also, God cursed the animal to crawl on its belly forever after. Now if the animal were a lizard, salamander, or even (as some people teach, as I "learned) a snake with legs and claws, or feet, that curse would just not be that much worse. All reptiles with legs and feet come pretty close to crawling on their bellies already...... BUT if you could FLY and you were forced to live forever after crawling on your belly..... THAT would be a curse MUCH worse, in relation to the alternatives.

Or if you were a spiritual being used to being in the throne room of YHVH and suddenly you're made the personification of death and are lower than the dust of the earth that all animals and Mankind are made from, that's pretty bad too.

But the Hebrews were well known for metaphor and allegory to portray what they were getting at. And they have at least a dozen names for Lucifer himself throughout the Bible, including "The Dragon".
A good example of taking this literally would be proclaiming that God is, literally, a Strong Tower. That he is a Rock. Or that he is a disembodied Hand.
Much of the Old Testament (even prophesy and the Psalms) are packed full of metaphor and allegory. And considering that Revelation relies heavily on metaphor, allegory, and descriptors of future events with time period explanation (like Daniel, with the 5 different beasts and the 5 different parts of a grand statue, explaining the 5 great global empires that will rise and fall in human history), it would make sense to apply the same allegorical and metaphorical descriptors of Lucifer made in Revelation, to his first appearance in Genesis 3.
Understanding that, its much easier to see that this was Lucifer, before the Angelic Rebellion, who manipulated humanity before trying to overtake the Throne of Heaven itself.
The curse, more so, explains exactly what Lucifer has become, him and his angels. Which also makes sense. Considering that to be made so little and so incomprehensibly low to even the very dust of Creation, by the Creator, is quite an insult and quite a punishment for one that attempted to perform a coup against the Creator Himself. Curses are not always literal either. A curse can use descriptive elements to tell you what you will be as, or what will befall you later.
After listening to videos such as this one, and from reading the Scriptures for over 30 years, I have pondered on this:
1. That the Serpent's wings were let her cut off, your made useless, resulting this being to fall to the Earth like lightening.
Hence, the need to crawl on his belly in an effort to travel from one place to another.
2. That eating dust, could also indicate that humans, and animals being his only food source, for we (our physical bodies are literally made from dust), instead of this Searpent eating the manna from Heaven.
Just some thoughts...
The serpent is a seraphim.......which literally means burning serpent/shining one. The serpent wasnt an animal, it WAS "The anointed cherub that covers", Ezekiel 28 literally says so word for word.

The Bible has a few stories involving animals:
- speaking snake (garden of Eden)
- speaking donkey (who saw the angel of the Lord and warned Balaam)
- possessed pigs (demons were commanded to Enter pigs)
- two bears (“executors” of Elisha’s curse)
The conclusion is that animals can be possessed by a spirit or an angel and can talk and do what’s commanded to them.
Interestingly in Catholic tradition it is believed that animals can talk during Christmas.
To me, snake in the garden of Eden could be possessed by Satan and apparently it wasn’t strange to hear speaking animal, neither Adam nor Eve saw this suspicious.
Notice that during the creation days, aquatic-reptilian animals are not mentioned. Why ? At what point were they created ?
In Revelation 16, “three unclean spirits like frogs” are mentioned.
Do the look of aquatic-reptilians animals reflects “the look” of some spirits ?
I think we can now say confidently, that a snake in the garden of Eden has been possessed by Satan’s spirit and literally spoke to Eve. This is biblical narrative.

It seems the snake allowed Satan to posses him and if “crawling on belly” is curse, then that would mean before the curse snake could even have legs and stand - so the snake indeed could reflect the look of the spirit (or the shining one).

It would seem to me Adam and Eve lacked the capacity to see that their actions, even though violating God’s direct command, were wrong. Which is somewhat beside the point. The knowledge of good and evil requires a maturity and experience in decision making man lacked at that time. Which God needed to remedy.

Even some members of the Hebrew church living in a large metropolis of Rome lacked the maturity to consistently make decisions deemed mature enough not to result in evil. But later in the book of Hebrews this is written.

Read the last part again, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. You cannot acquire the fruit of righteousness, fruit of the Spirit without the firm hand of God molding you on the potters wheel.
It’s simple straightforward symbolism and metaphor. Yeshua called the scribes and Pharisees a “brood of vipers” does that mean they were literally talking snakes, no! Yet they had the characteristics of the serpent spoken of in genesis. I contend these indeed are of that ancient serpent and that serpent wasn’t an animal anymore than Christ is a Lion lamb hybrid creature.
It is interesting that the book of Enoch, chapter LXIX says the one who led Eve astray was not Lucifer (Samjâzâ in Enoch), but rather, it was a lesser ranking demon named Gâdreêl.

According to the Book of Jubilees, animals had the ability to talk before the Fall of Adam and Eve. There was also that time when God opened the mouth of Balaam’s donkey in Numbers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if snakes and other animals could talk too. It sure is something to consider.

As for what you said about the Bible never mentioning that it was normal for animals to talk, I already mentioned that there was Balaam’s donkey in Numbers. Also the serpent could have had the ability of speech on its own before satan came along and influenced it.
All of this of course is just pure conjecture and we might never know for sure. Only God knows everything.
The hebrew word for snake in this passage, 'nachash,' also means "Enchanter," more specifically it says "The Enchanter," so it was Satan herself, not in a different form, not a possession, but appearing as an angel of light to other beings of Light. Every hebrew word means more than one thing, but they'll have a common root. 'Enchanter' and 'snake' have "hissing and ear tickling" in common. Context is the key in every scripture! The being in this passage wasn't a physical snake at all, animals are used to refer to people and angels throughout the Bible, the same as we do today: if I say, "That dirty snake in the grass," you know I'm talking about a rotten person. This misinterpretation happens again with the 'bronze serpent' that Moses erects. The word for serpent in that passage is 'seraph,' which is also a type of angel. When you look at what a seraph looked like in Isaiah and Revelation, you'll be enlightened at the image that was actually on a pole, and what was actually afflicting the people as "fiery serpents."

Spiritually, Satan going on her 'belly' means being brought low from her heavenly estate as a Being of light, and forced to 'eat the dust.' We're the dust, and Satan goes forth like a lioness seeking whom she can devour. If you do well, will you not be accepted - and if you do not do well, Sin is seated at the door waiting for you, and her feet are rooted down in Hell. You see, all of this is about a sneaky, conniving creature laying in wait to catch weak ones who stray from the herd.

That was a conclusion I came to a long while ago. Its not a literal snake, as so many Christians presumed the Serpent in the Garden of Eden to be. And its terrible that many Sunday Schools portray the Serpent in such a manner without correction.
Even more so, this whole portrayal hearkens back to the Catholic Church. There are MANY things that have carried over into the Protestant Church from the Catholic Church that should've been reevaluated seriously and with the theological mind necessary to determine the veracity of the claims founded from a "Church" that was rapidly showing its growth of error and straying from the source material in favor of man made traditions and cardinal theology rather than Scriptural Theology.

The meaning of the name Seraph is synonymous with serpent. Seraphim angels are serpents, and its more than just Satan. Enoch tells us the serpent in the garden was named Gadreel.
Genesis 3:1-19
Eating fruit was not the original sin. Adultery was. How could the serpent have a sexual union with Eve? It was only after God cursed it that he became a snake. “Upon thy belly shalt thou go (he didn’t go on his belly before this) and dust thou shalt eat all the days of thy life.” (Genesis 3:14).
Before this, he was more subtle than any beasts (not reptiles) of the field (Genesis 3:1). He could also talk, reason and persuade. (Genesis 3:1-5).

Adam was the son of God (Luke 3:38) and his son was Seth, who took the place of Abel (Genesis 5:3 and Jude 14). Eve is the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20) but Adam was not the father of all living. He knew her for the second time and she had her third son (Genesis 4:24).

When a person's body dies they see that their natural body was based on there spirt body but worse and fallen so the biology is based on the spirit anyways. If the serpant had a spirit body it would still be like the spirit if it had a body. Another missunderstood thing is man is above the animals. Before falling man could speak to creation through his soul. The animals could not speak his language. The man was higher and could speak their language being above them. Man could speak to animals but the animals could not speak to man in his language. The devil could not get into the Garden. The serpent and the devil were speaking outside the garden and the serpent decided to speak the devils message. Thats why it had to pay. The animals had their choices too like the angels. Before the sun there was the "uncreated light", which Orthodox saints are shrouded in. The Catholics were blessed with the miracle of the sun at Fatima, Portugal.
I used to be skeptical about the miracle because it could NOT have been the real sun (or else half the world would have seen it and not just those gathered in the town); that is, until I understood, by God's grace, there was LIGHT in the universe before He created the lights in our skies - ie. sun and moon.

I agree with Dr. Heiser on this topic. I think he is an amazing teacher. There is however one little thing I’d like to suggest about the whole earth being created before the sun situation. Being a YEC “Young Earth Creationist” we have this question a lot. Well the quick answer is that yes we believe God created the earth first, before the sun/stars. How? Well first off God doesn’t need to go by our time keeping limitations which is based on the rotation of the earth and the rotation around the sun to make a day and a year. God knows how long the earth has been there and God knows how when the earth has made a complete rotation to say a 24 hour day has passed whether the sun exists or not. For even it says in the New Heavens and New Earth that there won’t even be a sun, rather God will fill us with light. Therefore I think it is entirely plausible for God to create the earth before the sun/stars and be able to sustain all things by His power/glory!
I agree with you, the Earth is older than the sun, the moon and all the stars in the universe. This is so easily seen in Genesis 1 and 2, and yet has been perceived so wrong by historians and scholars alike throughout all of history. The six week creation week is not about the creation of the planet earth, but about the forming and shaping and filling earth with life. The earth was already created, empty and without form BEFORE God created the rest of the universe and mankind. However, this also means it does not have 6000 years, as the verses don't give any clue to when it was created. It could be 1 God's day, it could have been thousands or millions. It says in the beginning God created the heavens ( His angelical host ) and the Earth. Beginning of what exactly? Of His creating plan. What we do know is that the Earth is, at least, 12000 years ( 6000 years after mankind+ 6000 years before mankind ). This also tells us something. The universe was created by God as a background to Earth, and not the other way around, like the leveling of a field first, before building the fundation for a house. I believe the cosmos was made for a man constant reminder of God's greatness, because it was created by him, through him and FOR him. All the creation was made for HIS glory. This also means life will never be found in other planets, because they were never planned to have life to begin with. And finally, to put that theory that some believe to rest, angels (aliens) don't have by default a physical body or physical home. Their abode/ home is spiritual heaven where God is, therefore they don't live in any other planet of the universe. Fallen angels have fallen to Earth, not to Mars or anywhere else. The Gen6 watchers are bound in chains in the Earth, not Saturn or Jupiter. There is absolutely no life outside of Earth, and when the satanic "science" media will tell the world there is, you will know its Satan's angelic gang they are talking about. No one knows the true size of the Earth. There are no planets either, but only stars. We don’t know what we look at on the sky, are we see gaseous objects or displayed objects or point lights caused by plasma discharge. If stars are gaseous object then someone would have to prove to at gas can be self-contained in the vacuum, so far the experiments shows the opposite is true - gas always expands. This is biblical narrative. Heliocentrism was introduced by Nicolas Copernicus, Luciferian as we now know it. Pope declared heliocentrism as true system and Masonic school system enforced this belief on unaware public. Vatican also have their well known telescope called Lucifer. Connect the dots.
The Sun and sunlight is just temporary replacement of God’s glory, so biblically the Sun was not needed to be created from the beginning.

I would also add that the Genesis starts from “at the beginning, God created heavens and the earth”. God exist beyond our dimension, so “at the beginning” God created time (at the beginning), space (heavens) and matter (the earth).

There is no reason to limit God’s abilities. We are told that the creation took seven days, so it is seven days.
Jesus healed people instantly, within a second, but any surgery usually requires weeks and months of further treatment. Couldn’t God suspend the time? Certainly he can. In the story of z Joshua, we are told that the Sun has been suspended for three hours, yet another example of “violation of physics laws”.

Take a close look at those remaining photos : foot print left on the Moon (however the pattern doesn’t match the boots worn by astronauts and it is not possible to leave any footprint in dry environment without any moisture), photo showing capsule and an astronaut - here look closely at shadow angles and you will see at least two directions - impossible if there is only one source, possible in studio with multiple lamps, some photos are composites meaning the are processed digitally, for example the cloud pattern is copied all over the “earth seen from the space”, what’s more analyze some NASA’s photos in Photoshop, play with contrast and you will see a square appearing around “distant Moon” - meaning the photo of the Moon was simply copied to the main photo etc. there are a lot of such disturbing “coincidences”. Look at NASA’s documents - all flights are tested over “flat earth”. No one ever went to the Moon. However there were operations to go through the firmament above forcibly or using rockers with bombs. Yes, it’s big, but many of NASA employees don’t realize that, they simply don’t question “the science”.
Japanese used high speed camera to record lightnings and found so called “Lightning’s sprites” , which appear as if the lightning come out of “invisible layer” exposing the firmament.
The biblical narrative is Flat Earth and Jew always believed in Flat Earth. This was changed when pope accepted heliocentrism and Freemasons spread this “science” through schooling system. There is no evidence that the stars are far objects composed of gas. They could be close object, point light source - for example “discharge of plasma” (called Z-pinch, see Electric Universe Theory).

It is worth mentioning though, that the Snake is identified as a "Beast of the field." We all know that is not an accident. I would be interested to hear Dr. Heiser's thoughts on the idea that there is some judgment on the animals because there was some sort of complicity in the fall of man and the rebellion against God. After the flood God specifically tells Noah that they can now eat meat. I'm not saying this as a certainty, I'm just trying to connect the dots.

It says "Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field..." Genesis 3:1 (NKJV). It doesn't say he was one of them, it says he was more cunning than them.

How do we know that the "ancient serpent" John writes about in Rev. 12 is a reference to the nachash in the garden? John does not say, "oh yeah, the serpent from the garden," does he?

In the book "Legends of the Bible" by Louis Ginzberg, page 38, the serpent is described as "Like a man, he stood upright upon two feet, and in height he was equal to the camel." This sounds similar to accounts of certain types of aliens resembling reptilian species,. Fossils indicate many dinosaurs also walked on two feet. The word "serpent" in Hebrew shouldn't necessarily refer only to snakes.

I would agree with his thoughts on Gen 3 because other scriptures make it "consistent". But to apply that idea to Gen 1 would be a gross error. I think you can only do that if we have other scripture backing that up. Zoology and Astronomy are man's attempts to understand how things work in those respective jurisdictions. MAN can be insanely wrong at times, hence the purpose of this channel I believe. The word "Nachash" is the key. It's primary meaning is not SERPENT, it is "Shining One, a whisperer". Shining one would lead us to some type of angelic being. A whisperer was a deceiver. Dig deeper. Heiser, God rest his soul, is right, but there is more.
Why the question as to what the serpent in the Garden of Eden was like ?
Firstly it says God cursed the serpent in Genesis 3:13 > And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Explanation - whatever shape or form the serpent had before the curse it was not crawling on its belly else that curse of God would be ineffectual and secondly would God put a curse above all cattle and every beast on a reptile (assuming theologians think of it as a snake ); it was most likely a Dragon which had legs and in any event it is referred to as the dragon old serpent, Devil, Satan in Revelation 12:9 > And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Eve was dazzled by the beauty of the Dragon and deceived by his smooth talk about immortal existence.
As it says in Ezekiel 28:13 > Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, ... the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
God did not disclose the above information as a passing observation to fill up space. It's there for a purpose. Remember Isaiah 28:10 > For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

Finally , we know from Scripture that angelic beings including cherub embody themselves in humans, beasts etc when they appear visibly before mankind. The serpent may have been an animal that could talk in a human voice I think several cultures show pictures of dragon's that walked along side of men and possibly spoke to them . It does seem strange though.

In Ezekiel Satan is described with many colors of jewels which if you look at snakes you will fine colors of jewels in them. So with my God who controls everything. The problem with this view is that it isn't historically based. The view of ancient jews was that Genesis was literal and its a 1st hand eyewitness testimony directly from God to Moses on Mount Sinai which is why Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights on 2 separate instances... Because he was writing down everything God told him about the beginning up to that point and also the laws for Israel.
Josephus in his Antiquities of the Jews says that all the animals could speak the Adamic language in the beginning. Its obvious from ancient Jewish writings plus Josephus plus the internality of scripture that Genesis is meant to be literal history.

A related issue often used to misunderstand the Creation is the creation of light before the sun. Francis Schaeffer deals with this quite adroitly in Genesis in Time and Space (although he fluffs on the historical significance of the 'days') in pointing out that the creation of light indicates, must indicate, the creation of the entire energy field that is basic to the physical cosmos. 'Light' had to be created first for the rest to follow, something the ancients could not have known. Without its energy substrate, the sun would have been a mass of inert de-energized 'stuff' (the dark?).
I think John trying to translate what he saw to something WE can grasp.

Eating fruit was not the original sin. Adultery was. How could the serpent have a sexual union with Eve? It was only after God cursed it that he became like a snake. “Upon thy belly shalt thou go (he didn’t go on his belly before this) and dust thou shalt eat all the days of thy life.” (Genesis 3:14).
Before this, he was more subtle than any beasts (not reptiles) of the field (Genesis 3:1). He could also talk, reason and persuade. (Genesis 3:1-5).
He walked upright, he talked and he was intelligent. He was between the animal kingdom and the human. Satan was in the garden (Ezekiel 28:13-17) and used the Serpent to mix/mingle his seed with the woman’s seed (Daniel 2:43). The sin exposing their nakedness was adultery.
Apples didn’t cause them shame; it was the loss of innocence. They didn’t
cover their mouths. The Serpent ate with Eve, then she shared with her husband. Two children were born. One evil and one good. Cain was the son of the devil (John 8:44), the wicked one (1 John 3:12). He was never recorded in the genealogy of Adam. Genealogies do not differ good sons from bad, they are based on the identity of the biological father.
Adam was the son of God (Luke 3:38) and his second son was Seth, who took the place of Abel (Genesis 5:3 and Jude 14). Eve is the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20) but Adam was not the father of all living. He knew her for the second time and she had her 'third' son (Genesis 4:24).
JESUS had to be born of a virgin - the Remedy for our sin bypassed the original sin. We are shaped in iniquity and conceived in sin (Psalms 51:5).
Men are typed as trees (Psalms 1:1-3). Women are typed as a Garden enclosed (Song of Solomon 4:12). Eve's punishment affected her in childbearing (Genesis 3:16).
The fruit of the Womb are children (Psalms 127:3)…an adulterous woman, she eateth, and wipeth her mouth…. (Proverbs 30:20).
The idea that Eve ate an apple is a trumped-up doctrine by a church that places no value in the scriptures. Much of the Bible is written in parables and types and shadows, but this is no reason to believe fables and church dogma instead of the Word of God.

According to The Secret Book of John, the Savior is the one who persuaded Adam and Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge.

The serpent is a creature of cunning and wisdom. We do not know what form it took. We only know that the punishment was cursed to become a creature that crawls on its belly.
Ancient Jewish civilization was heavily influenced by Babylonian religious views. They changed up a few things, but decided to do something even Hollywood does every now and then, which is to take the prior popular mascot and have their own mascot be smarter, punish the prior mascot, or outright destroy it somehow. The snake was a positive part of Babylonian religious beliefs long before the first Jew. That's why the ancient Jews wrote in the snake/serpent in the Garden of Eden as being wicked and ultimately punished by the new mascot... Yahweh. History is very interesting when you read from multiple sources and piece together the truth.
As someone raised in evangelicalism, I don’t think there’s many that would claim that it was anything more than Satan inhabiting the body of a serpent…. Not sure where he gets his ideas about the claims of evangelicalism…..

Perhaps before the fall we could communicate with animals. That's why it wasn't a big deal. We understand today that demons can possess animals and humans, too.
The original phrase calls it "the Nakash". The translation allows for a fiery, flying serpent. As you pointed out, "The Shining One" is also an acceptable translation. One of the key facts here is the qualifier "the". When the word, "the" is used it signifies only one of a kind. Clearly if a mere animal was intended as the meaning there would necessarily have been more than one in order to be fruitful and multiply. The Nakash however was never intended to reproduce, it is a one of a kind.

I would suspect that as a star were to form that at some point before it reaches a condensed recognizable state that there would be an ignition point or a point were energetic states are reached producing light before one would call it a star. So yes Genesis 1 is addressing cosmology and the light on the first day has no problem with the formation of the sun on the forth day.

Eva was not surprised that the snake could speak, which means that Adam and Eva in Paradise could communicate with the animals. It was a normal snake nothing different otherwise they would have answered to God that this snake was different from all others
