  • In this video I try to cool down my hot garage by installing a portable AC unit. where I live in Las Vegas we are still hitting the triple digits heat so my small workshop (single car garage) is still really hot and hard to do my woodworking projects in. Watch me try and then fail and then finally beat the heat!!! #woodworkingtools #woodworking #smallworkshop #woodworkingprojects #beginnerwoodworking
Here is an affiliate link for the portable AC I used in the video. Its on sale!!

Just a thought... Why not use one of those cool magnetic dryer vent exhaust things and connect it to the dryer exhaust?

Couple tidbits from a portable ac user.
    1) for additional prefiltering I get rolls of velcro (1/2in - 1in) and stick the hook half around all the air inlets. Then get the cut your own size washable blue filter material and cut it to cover the air inlets. The hook side of the velcro will grab onto the filter material and hold it in place.
    2) most portable ac units 12k btu and below are "single hose" exhaust only (like the one you have). This will create a negative pressure environment and is more likely to pull in outside hot air from any weak spots (cracks). Recommendation for you being you don't have a window for a window unit is to spend a bit more and find a "dual hose" portable unit. The downside is either cut a hole in the door, wall, or ceiling (most expensive option) for attaching the hose to intake and exhaust the air for the builtin Compressor. The upside will be you can run it at a lower speed for quieter noise levels and will cool down faster upon startup.
    3) have an a/c company come out and see if it would be possible to add a vent into the garage and a filtered opening into the house for best airflow.
Hopefully this will help as I too work in my garage at the moment in TX Hundred and hell Temps and high humidity.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you brother, I appreciate all the info. Someone had suggested to run the line into the attic and out the eave vents. I don't have eave vents but I found some retro fit ones that I could add in. what do you think of that idea? Otherwise Ill just go out through the side of my house through the stucco.

Love your sense of humor. I bought one of these types of AC units for my garage shop. Fortunately I have a window that I was able to vent it out of. Living in SW Missouri, it's not as much the heat as it is the humidity. This took care of both and I could keep my shop around 75 degrees all summer.

Maybe but this one was really putting out some cold air. But someone said the air you are blowing out of the garage is being sucked back in from the outside so I get what you are saying.

    • @boxingfavsmg
      @boxingfavsmg 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Yep. Single hose sucks the cool air from the house. Splits the air flow. Some goes over the evaporator coils to the front of the unit. The rest flows over the condenser coils then then hot air out through the hose. Where does the house air get replaced from? Some places in the house now are pulling hot outside air in.

For me I had the same problem with AC heat exhaust. Hooked it up to a 6” PVC pipe mounted to the wall, went through the ceiling of the garage and ran the vent to the side of the house and let it vent out through the soffit.

I did the same thing this spring. Except I bought the Westinghouse 14,000BTU Portable & just went through the drywall, osb & brick 🧱 (outside). It sure was nice….. until my first electric bill came ⬆️⬆️😳😱 & my wife about hit roof!! She said "how often are you running it"?!?! I said "I haven’t even shut it off yet"!! She said "why are you running it at night when you’re not even in there"?! I said "I like it already cool 🥶 in there when I go out in the mornings"! She rolled her eyes 😒 at me like I better just get a cot & stay out here permanently!! LoL 😂
    But it’s a win win for me….. Away from the olé lady & a cool🥶 garage! 😉
Oh & FYI we live in TX where it’s never "cool"!! The past couple of summers I thought I was gonna die in here, but this summer I’ve been living like King 👑….. A Cool 🥶 King 👑! 😉

Your story had me cracking up, thank you for sharing it. 😂 I haven't gotten an electric bill yet so I'm not sure what I'm in for. Out here in Vegas they let you take your electric bill and distribute it equally throughout the year based on your previous year. That way your not paying $1000 a month in the summer and $100 a month in the winter. so I wont get in trouble with my wife till next year!! 😂😂😂

Yeah they let us do that here too, but I (personally) just don’t cause I look at the opposite way….. I don’t like paying an average bill when I know nothing has been running (which would be "winter" here). You don’t really need heat & don’t have any a/c running either so I enjoy those $100-$150 electric bills then!
But to each there own, that’s what makes the world go around. 🤔 🤷‍♂️
Anyways great video & content!! Truly had me LoL-ing too 😂

Just curious, are you sucking a vacuum inside your shop or is the air that you are sucking out being replaced with hot outside air sneaking into the garage thru every tiny opening? A mini-split sure sounds like the ideal solution and it will runon the more efficient 240 volt circuit.

Just bite the bullet and install a mini-split. Had one put in Early August and was astonished at the difference. They installed it and set it on 72F. About two hours later the outside temp was 100F and inside the 16X24 shop it was a meat locker. That was $3,500 well spent. I've been out there almost every afternoon since then and the wife is real happy with me getting projects done.

Thanks for the video. I have a similer AC unit and I vent mine into the attic via the attic access hatch, as hot as the air is exiting the AC unit it is cool compared to the temps in the attic. When I insulated the attic I checked the temps using an IR thermometer and on a 35C day the temps in the attic were around 50C, so as the AC unit cools the garage it also cools the attic.

You have to remember that any air that goes outside from the AC unit removes air from inside the house,. And it lowers the pressure inside the house and the air that that is removed from the house has to be replaced and it will come in through any leeks in the house and with it will come hot air and humidity. Make a flap that's hinged to the wall above the garage door. Put triangles on the ends so they cover the gaps at the sides of the door. Apply foam weather stripping as needed to seal the gaps. It should be possible to mount some extension style springs so that they over-center and will hold the flap down against the door yet when the flap is pushed up they'll hold it high enough to clear the door so it can fully open. A eye bolt in the middle of the long edge could be used to open and close the flap using a sturdy broom handle with a hook on its end.
A problem with single hose portable air conditioners is they take part of the air they've cooled, pull that through the condenser where it gets warmed then blown outside. That exhaust duct is usually not insulated so it radiates heat back into the cooled space.
Time for another hack! Make a plenum from coroplast over the condenser intake and connect a flexible, insulated duct to it and to your under door board. Insulate the exhaust duct or replace it with an insulated duct.

Props to the person that sent you that air conditioner, however, a a decent sized mini split is going to work a lot better. I live in Phoenix, az, so I know about the temps you’re dealing with. I insulated my garage, and haven’t even finished fully insulating my garage door with a DIY kit, and my 18 K mini split does really well. It can cool my garage from the hundred and teens down to the high 80s in about an hour. My garage door is west facing, so the evening sun is brutal and it can have a hard time keeping up with that heat, but it looks like with your set up, a mini split will have you in the 70° all day long.

The added benefit from doing it that way is dryer exhausts vents have louvers that close preventing things like hot air or little critters from getting inside.

Maybe cut a hole in the garage door and attach the AC duct adapter to the door. You can fabricate a color matched duct cover for the door when not in use and get rid of the huge duct hose running through your home. That LONG length of duct hose is straining the AC exhaust motor because it has to push a much greater amount of air.

Vent it to the attic space itd be a lot easier plus you could set the unit on a shelf which being that cold air falls being on a shelf would help your situation

      Gaff is an alternate spelling.
Normally used as a nautical term (primary definition), but also used to indicate an error.
Found it also has other meanings I didn’t know about ‘to cheat’ and in British English ‘to gamble’
Gotta love all the variations on spelling in the English language 🤪🤪

My house has a garage door that goes into our laundry room then a door from the laundry room goes into our house. Your home looks like it has the same set up as mine. In the laundry room there is a exhaust fan vent on top that sucks the moisture air out of the laundry room out. Got the exhaust hose from our portable air unit and attached it to this laundry exhaust vent. Make sure the laundry exhaust fan is on so that it helps pull the exhaust from the portable ac unit. It also helps to insulate your garage doors. The big metal ones. They sell insulation that is made for such garage doors. It wedges between each section.

Thanks brother, I appreciate all the advice! I thought about using the laundry room exhaust but its only a 4 inch duct coming off the vent and my ac has a 6 inch duct. I was afraid to reduce it by that much. Did you have to reduce it? My garage door is insulated. Its not the typical foam panels like usual its actually part of the door. Someone suggested to go up through the ceiling and out of the eaves so i might try that before next summer.

I suggest upsizing the laundry vent to 6 inches. It should be easier than running an all-new pass

How bout a doggy door style exaust in the garage doo itself? That way it stay closed in the winter and the wind from the exaust can blow it open.

    • @jascogoods
      @jascogoods  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

That's a good idea. I didn't want to make a hole in the garage door because I might have to replace the panel when I go to sell and that can get expensive.

Good job! Mine is twice that size, but I have a window in my garage. Pro tip...better get some screen over that vent. A critter may crawl up that and start eating your hose! Blessings!!!
