I invested in the airless system as it seemed alot easier on the body. But after about 2 years I sold the lot. This system is designed for large projects and I wanted to see how it worked for myself on small domestic jobs. It was to much of a hassle for me in the end and I went back to traditional methods.
This is very interesting. I could imagine that being the case to be honest - I'd only use it for big projects but it's interesting to hear your feedback. Cheers mate... hope you're well 👍
@Some Words all you need is 20 bags of plaster a bucket and trowel and start drinking 3 special brew for breakfast. Well done you are a qualified plasterer 🤣
We’ve been spray plastering for about 3 years. I use a Graco APX. Once you’ve got the hang of it it’s a doddle. Over Artex, wallpaper and bad walls. Easy, quick and no mist coat when painting. It is amazing for large works but we also use it for domestic work. I reckon it’s a winner👍
Hi there mate. I've been spray plastering for 2yrs now after doing a course and investing in the same set up you were using. I'm a drywall taper to trade and I can tell you it will make you money. I would say about 80% of my work is now spray plastering and the rest is taping. Most of my work is now spray plastering over artex ceilings and nine times out of ten the client wants their whole house done. With this system you can just spray directly on, no bonding to be done, you can get three coats on in a day easy if it's a heavy texture your working over, and get a decent sander like a Mirca Leros connected to a good extractor there is very minimal dust. Its so much cleaner, easier and faster than traditional plastering. Go for it mate it's a no brainer!
Hi Duncan, yes working in people's houses is no problem. You just cover all furniture with dust sheets just as you would do if you were painting. This system is so much cleaner than traditional plastering and the dust off the sanding down is absolutely minimal as long as you have a good sander connected to a good extractor.
Great video, many thanks. Need another video at suitable point on costs and maintenance of the machine. What goes wrong and how easy to fix, which bits might need replacement etc. etc. Thanks again.
totally agree with you. i dont think i would ever get used to this method especially in real world situations where this method is just going to be more time consuming. how long does it take to mask windows and doors up for instance; not convinced at all;
Its horses for courses. This is a demonstration, could you imagine turning up with that machine and noise to skim a bedroom, but I tell you what, if you was doing a school or something with massive hallways you would do a day trimming up and a day spraying its happy days in and out in 2 days laughing
Yea common knowledge in the trade that this method has been around for decade's. If it were a game changer it would have done so already. Hope the cource didn't cost you much👍
Hi blaine..good effort for your first lesson! I'm a polished plasterer by trade (venetian/marmorino)..we use many types of trowels flexi or cut down etc, but starting to feel some aches and pains after all these years (55yo)..and plaster spraying has always sounded appealing..loving the simplicity of it...

@@PlasteringForBeginners you will love the polished plaster...so many styles u just need abit more elbow grease for some of the finishes lol...good luck and keep up the good work😎👍🏻
This is def the future I’d recommend getting some spatulas loads quicker. We mainly do big commercials sites & high end new builds with it. Main contractors love it as it’s far less snagging & they don’t have to pay patchers to patch the multi finish up. It’s a no brainer really
In case anyone is using this video to teach themselves.. @ 5:36 "basically turn it off" is not going to cut it - the machine will remain under pressure even if it is turned off! When you take a break, you need switch the unit from "Spray" to "Prime", using the pressure relief valve. Before that you will want to reduce the pressure to zero using the main pressure dial.
That is a sweet rig I used to spray mud to fix messed up hotel walls with a mark 5 but did not have a hopper he just got to be careful that thicker than paint it'll take fingers off
I was all on board till he mentioned sanding. Then I thought gloryfied taping. And all ok in ideal cercumstance. And how much is the machine. In can you leave in hopper overnight without it skinning over and having lumps hence blocks. Sorry lot of questions /doubts
Impressive. We call this Level 5 drywall in the states. Most people wouldn’t except this is “hardcoat” or plaster, but I think it’s as good or better aesthetically.
We had a go with this on some eco houses 10 years ago. Only worth getting out if you have massive areas to do. Nowhere stocked it at the time so committed to buying by the pallet. We covered around 100m2 per day but you still have to tape and fill all joints before spraying. Great for the right application. We had 6 metre ceiling heights so my mate pushed me round on an aluminium tower whilst I sprayed!! Lots of fun!
We’ve been using this graco mark V for level 5 drywall finishes for the last 5 years here in USA . We do commercial construction like hotels etc. We blow out 300+ yards per day no problem. We love it! Superior finishes
I use the same plaster in Poland for finishing we roll it on and skim it flat 2 coats. Usually one rolls and the other skims depending on the temp we can get 5 full rooms done in a day, we use Halogen lamps on the wall while working it to.get a better finish. Always some.sanding to do the next day or so. Thanks for the video always good to see what is out there 👍
Being a plasterer myself, have never tried sprayed skimming, I have only done spray render which is definitely worth it but for spray skimming I don’t see how it’s feasible, would be nice to see a photo of paintable sprayed skim :)
In my opinion the sprayed plaster finishes way better than traditional gypsum plaster when painted. Also takes less time to decorate as no list coat required. Tradional plaster is a harder finish for sure and is easier to flatten off and work with but doesn't look as good when fully finished imo

You should try paint roller method. There are special rollers that are made from plastic naps. Cost around £20, but you will get the same quality if not better than this excessively priced sprayer. And it’s time saver also. Cheers
Roller looks exactly like 9” painting roller but instead of wool, its made of soft plastic. Basically it feels exactly the same but you can load more plaster in roller. After you finish just put it inside paint bucket and cover it with lid. No cleaning is required after.
I don't see the point for doing this when it's a flat Wall to begin with so why spay a 1/8 inch layer to slick offi mean wouldn't it still be a flat Wall after worth plus more raterial and it doesn't take out any imperfections I'm your flat Wall
I was a a machine Plastering Subbie in Berlin Germany. A guy in Kaiserslautern kept ringing me saying he had 4 years work and had 6 houses ready. Eventually I sent him A good Geordie & A Cockney 2 man team. After a month they had run out of work as they were doing 2 houses a week. That's the main reason they don't work over here! I done a revite recently that had been sprayed (Barret build 1900/2000) this product is VERY soft sands easy / also marks easy !! The problem is it also shails off easy - I had to scrap the whole ceiling back to the boards as parts were coming off - It might be good for commercial stuff but for domestic where you will get more drying out / movement - it is useless But bearing in mind the big builders are ONLY bothered about speed / price and not longevity - it is a spray get there money & gone as long as it lasts a couple of years until the house is out of warranty then it is the BUYERS / OWNERS problem !! The yanks use a similar style of stuff - ready mixed but apply it with a roller and then flatten & a light sand - it gets the walls like glass & a two man team can do a room quickly & no expensive machine !! Suppose it depends what type of work you do & how rich you are !!
For myself this is frecking great. I'm into alternative living and with that comes alternative materials such as gob building which you can make some fantastic shapes out of. Spray plaster in this instance would work a charm. Thanks for uploading bud.
I would also like to know this....I think the tips are usually within the 535-539 range, for a machine with an output of approx 5L/min (which if I remember correctly the Graco Mark V, used in this vid, has....i use Wagner machines though......). Also the tubing, and Gun specs, required to spray plaster, used in this vid/generally, i would really appreciate knowing.
@@OrdinaryJoe12 my thought process was based on when house builders give plumbers a unit price to fit a central heating system. So your profits will be cut to the bone.
@@richardmcdougall233 dustless sanding is a nice marketing term but we all know that’s not exactly true. The fine air bourne dust is the issue in my opinion. I’ll stick with normal plaster and let you crack on thanks very much.
The system, gun, tips etc are almost identical to the airless paint systems I was using 20 years ago for priming trailer chassis and they were also made by Graco! I’m guessing the main difference being the size of the fluid tip for the higher viscosity product? Be careful what you wish for mate us ex paint sprayers may come out of retirement😂
@@PlasteringForBeginners haven’t put the boots away mate, self employed multi trade now but leave the plastering to the experts I say👍🏻 been subbed for a while now and like any other skilled plasterer you make it look easy........too easy, great channel btw
Seen this system used where I'm working at the moment some of the walls in the complex are concrete and require a skilled plasterer to dot and dab them it seems to be used on apartments and hotels alot for speed
Have you ever done a video on plastering the underside of kite winder stairs, the batten and mesh method? Kinda like lath and plaster, it'd be interesting to see the whole process as it's not been covered much on youtube
I've got mesh to use for my walls. I'd feel better about it if I used it but I'm pretty tempted to skip the step judging by the infrequency of seeing it done.
Not watched the whole video as not got time right now but if you have to tape and joint beforehand then........seems counter productive. Time you tape and joint you'd have most of the wall on. Also would you really set this up for a bathroom reskim. Or any room for that matter. Fair enough on industrial jobs but private work?
Looks to me that ur walls need to b pretty good to start with to use this method not to mention dragging that contraption from job to job looks more hassle than it’s worth maybe on a massive warehouse size job it would pay but not on ur normal run of the mill project
It does the first few times, but I found you get a routine using them a lot, and there's little tricks and cleaning equipment that can save loads of time. Plus the latest models have a setting just for cleaning - that especially cuts the time down in my experience
This technic and material is more akin to how walls are finished in the US. Joint compound and tape with no finish or skim coat unless in a high end residential or commercial setting. To a comment bellow as to why not just tape the joints and then prime the rest of the plasterboard - this can be done, but, different compounds have different PSI and granular mixes. A complete skim coat always looks best and prevents blotching in paints and uneven surfaces across your walls, especially where butt joints come together with large build-ups. It’s better for repairs and touch ups after your 2nd fix guys come through as you can feather out damaged areas. I’m guessing this may catch on more outside of the UK more. I hope traditional plater remains the norm. The skim coat is far superior and durable.
I'm going to start by saying I'm not a plasterer and can't plaster myself. This to me looks very slow, I would put money on a decent plasterer would be loads faster than this. By the time the prep is done a plasterer would be nearly done.
Hey men I saw your video bit I have a question You think I can use a titan 4900 sprayer machine to sprayer the drywallmud on walls I just want know if my machine have the right power to do it thank you
My question is how does it compare with multifinish for hardness, if it is no harder than a filler then there would be little reason to use it at all, if it is just as hard then I could see this being very useful on big sites
I have a same kit, but for some reason it doesn't suck the plaster up and just keep pumping ... but nothing, i have cleaned it pretty much tried everything... any idea?
I'm not sure this does much more than lower the barrier to entry for beginners. I can also see a ton of new splasterers bidding for work that don't actually know how to plaster.
Similar to Airless paint spraying I think this method is only suitable for large jobs - perhaps industrial or commercial premises - where you are doing large areas with the same paint system. What it enables you to do is use trained but unskilled labour to do the spraying and a skilled tradesman to do the finishing. This enables you to utilise the skilled labour far more efficiently thus reducing labour costs (assuming you are an employer). I imagine that your material costs are substantially more than normal plastering method costs. And the pumps are not cheap and need to be maintained. To be cost effective these systems have got to be used to their full potential. If you have the jobs to warrant the investment go for it, but otherwise it could just me an expensive peice of kit that gathers dust.
Great video. I have a Wagner hc 940 for sale. We tried this system when multifinish plaster was hard come by, this system is not for us a bit to long winded, probably suits decorators better, we find plastering the traditional way is far more cost effective and quicker. Wagner hc 940 for sale
Hi mate This has been out for about 5 years on commercial sites.Don’t really see many plasterers any more all done by Eastern European’s Enjoy your videos👍🏼
It’s also cool that the product is white. That’s a time saver on the overall project too, because (I assume) you don’t need the painters to do a mist coat or an undercoat either.
Wow watched all of it and didn't even notice the time. I use a paint sprayer to paint and it's top notch. This plaster sprayer looks great but I feel I'm gonna need a plasterer to smooth it becasue I'm not a plasterer!?!?! I just paid a fortune to a builder to plaster a big building.
I used to use a Graco xp70 and a 1-1 for spray applied liquid plastics and waterproofing , worst thing is the crust around the hoppers you have to clean it well or little bits will block the hopper , I learned from other operatives not cleaning it and it being sent out to my job , clean clean clean the hoppers properly and bristles from cheap brushes get clogged so no cheap paint brushes only a £20 purdy 🤣 👍🏻 regards from east London
Personally I love this system I use it on house refurbishments from top to bottom all in one hit... preparation is key the finish is flawless after a sand with the mirka with a dust extraction is a must..... 5k an uve got a decent set up
Thanks for posting this Blaine. This is also a first, a film with it's own adverts, way to go, respect. It was all nicely explained and demo'd thanks, he sprayed on in a pattern I use when I spray lime wash and looks great. It may be the dogs bollox but working with something that sounds like a duck being murdered would get on the nerves. It's a gamechanger alright, started in 1932 the Teutonic Knauf now have 150 production sites worldwide and as 1 of 6 producers of wallboard they have about 81% of the global wallboard market. They are the big boys so you'd think that they would spend a little extra coming up with a plastic bag recycle system or use a biodegradable plastic bag. Plastic should be made from plastic, no more raw materials, profits from the big 6 single use plastic producers could be put into monetarising waste plastic to give it value and people would collect it like old tins and bottles. The tragedy is that all industries still uses so much plastic and packaging and was one of the reasons that I switched to lime from using gypsum & cement, I liked the history, the lime cycle and that the ancients used the same stuff, so if it was good enough for the Romans..... I've been using the same supplier for about 15 years buying my materials in ton bags and they deliver for £40 travel cost per load these days. I also keep my old ton bags and one day might make a giant kite. Liked the bag squeezer and would love a whole set-up and what's the cost and back-up like? Unlike cement and gypsum a lime wall will absorb carbon dioxide, and gives you better acoustics and having said all the above, the future will probably be carbon nanotubes, graphene and geopolymer cement and we'll be living like those in Ready Player One.
Might want to check your camera settings and change frequency to 50Hz and not 60Hz to stop the flickering caused by those fluorescent lamps. Used to work on site with a guy that said Yeah a lot, we nicknamed him Matt Bianco. Interesting concept, be careful what you wish for, Airless sprayer today Robot tomorrow, be out of work sooner that you can say a yeh - yeh , thats what I say, I say yeh - yeh.
I was going to ask this as well, so thank you! I like "old world" and textured wall styles. I wonder if it would be fine to do base layers multi-use plaster and top layers Venetian?
Hi Blaine! I did your online course and plastered my first wall, turned out pretty good and within time, so thanks for that! I’ve been looking into the spray plaster, as I’ve taken on the airless spray painting. Is there any surface prep before you go on with the Knauf, such as primer etc? What about problem walls with cracks? Ive heard of a system where the entire wall is covered with fibreglass as part of the whole system, is this a Knauf stage for problem walls?
The boards need to be spot on for this system to be effective. You’ll never go on a development with a volume builder where this is the case. The fact you have to dub out with joint filler is an issue, if there was a joint filler that would go through the machine so you could wiz around fast, would be a big improvement. The fact the material is easy to flatten is good. Let’s not hide from the fact that the coat looks less then half a mil thick though..? I can see this being faster then tape and jointing. Probably a better finish then most people get with skim too. What’s the cost of a bag of this material and the machine? Let’s face it if the layout for material is double it’s just not worth it...
I invested in the airless system as it seemed alot easier on the body. But after about 2 years I sold the lot. if you paint the room its the same result.
It been out year's never really taking off when you have got to the point having to joint and and taping before the spaying most would just paint
By time you have fixed angle beads and filled them out plus fill joints out before spraying I think it's quicker just to skim with multifinish

Great video guys, What size filters and tip did you use for this job? thanks in advance
Looking forward to the plaster a 4 bed house in a day for the price of one room plastering 👍
or plaster a 4 bed house for time of a 1 bed for the cost of a 4 bed.
@@OrdinaryJoe12 my thought process was based on when house builders give plumbers a unit price to fit a central heating system. So your profits will be cut to the bone.
The instructor mentioned its designed to be sanded. As soon as he said that I tuned out. There’s enough dust on site without breathing any more in.
It's replacing the plaster dust, so its dust neutral ;-)
Mirka dustless sander or equivalent well worth it.
You only get 1 set of lungs mirka rep told me on a demo day...
@@richardmcdougall233 dustless sanding is a nice marketing term but we all know that’s not exactly true. The fine air bourne dust is the issue in my opinion. I’ll stick with normal plaster and let you crack on thanks very much.
Same here, if it needs sanding then its just a spray taping system.
Now get a machine to mix and spray multifinish then I'd consider it.
Haha you'd be good at it then mate. Is this tempting you back into your work boots?? 🤣
@@PlasteringForBeginners haven’t put the boots away mate, self employed multi trade now but leave the plastering to the experts I say👍🏻 been subbed for a while now and like any other skilled plasterer you make it look easy........too easy, great channel btw
Probably easy if the boards are good. What happens if the owners boarded it or it’s site work..... wont be as neat
This is basically tape and joint to a level 5 finish tape and joint being a 4, if you like sanding and light checking maybe its for you.
Not watched the whole video as not got time right now but if you have to tape and joint beforehand then........seems counter productive. Time you tape and joint you'd have most of the wall on. Also would you really set this up for a bathroom reskim. Or any room for that matter. Fair enough on industrial jobs but private work?
You can roll it on also with a paint roller that way you don't need to skim , then machine sand also.
Seems more like tape & jointing than plastering?
hi mate i spoke to Stuart from knauff last week was in 2 minds to book into the course at Grimsby, You made my mind up thanks
Haha glad to hear it 👍
Looks to me that ur walls need to b pretty good to start with to use this method not to mention dragging that contraption from job to job looks more hassle than it’s worth maybe on a massive warehouse size job it would pay but not on ur normal run of the mill project
Used that machine years ago for spraying fire resistant coatings. It takes ages cleaning it all out at the end of the day.
It does the first few times, but I found you get a routine using them a lot, and there's little tricks and cleaning equipment that can save loads of time. Plus the latest models have a setting just for cleaning - that especially cuts the time down in my experience
Why is the gear not going off in the hopper? Did I understand right that you can leave it full over night? What is this plaster?
It's Voodoo magic - I'm not really sure how it does it ha!
That looks a great system, wonder what its like for refurb work. Looks like its for new builds are complete refurbs..
Taping and sanding the joints, 1 or 2 coats and then this. Remind me where the benefit is?
Hey men I saw your video bit I have a question
You think I can use a titan 4900 sprayer machine to sprayer the drywallmud on walls I just want know if my machine have the right power to do it thank you
Plaster spraying since the 90s it's old school for me 😅🇬🇷
My question is how does it compare with multifinish for hardness, if it is no harder than a filler then there would be little reason to use it at all, if it is just as hard then I could see this being very useful on big sites
How did you get on that course do you need to be a time served plasterer to get on the course
Is that not a joint compound or is it a plaster
Yep its jc
Hi mate
This has been out for about 5 years on commercial sites.Don’t really see many plasterers any more all done by Eastern European’s
Enjoy your videos👍🏼
Yeah I've heard this actually. Did you ever try it?? Cheers 👍
Hi mate
No I’m a tiler sick to death of cleaning up all the dust from them sanding it down
It’s also cool that the product is white. That’s a time saver on the overall project too, because (I assume) you don’t need the painters to do a mist coat or an undercoat either.
Absolutely would still need to prime this same as you would plaster or easi fill etc
Can you use this stuff for reskim work? or is it only over new plaster boards?
You can use it on existing walls too mate!
I wonder how it will work on a sand and cement render wall.
Excellent, Knauf are always innovative, I am not a plasterer but would love to try that system out. thanks for sharing this
Not a problem - thank you for watching 👍
Innovate? Never made a skim to rival bg........
Be cracking in no time, it’s just spaying on easyfil, and having to fill tapes first defeats the object, multi finish all the way for me
How thick does it lay on? Can you go spray a beaded wall around a window etc? I assume reveals would still be layed on by hand?
i do a lot of spraying both hvlp and airless, you did well there. its not as straight forward as it looks.
I am self-builder and this looks ideal for me - can you hire the gear?
looks so complicated but how many m2 can you roughly do a day on nice runs like this
Personally I love this system I use it on house refurbishments from top to bottom all in one hit... preparation is key the finish is flawless after a sand with the mirka with a dust extraction is a must..... 5k an uve got a decent set up
This sounds like the right way to do it mate!! I'm going to keep trying it - I enjoyed it 👍
Hi Blaine, bit off topic but what would u say is the best twitcher on the market? Every one I've had has been rubbish!!
Nice we do that here. We call it level 5 Finnish coat.
Defo need to try this will take all the ball ache out of the job and save lots of time.looking forward to part 2
It's a bit easier ha! Thank you mate ☺️
Been able to spray multi finish on with a pft ritmo aswell for over 15 years
I have been doing this for years and will be teaching the system this year
Good luck my friend!!
Just sand the joint and paint . Can this be used on a rendered wall?
Thanks for this video there’s not a chance il ever use this method
Anyone who knows anything about plastering knows this is a huge waste of time....and a lot more work. Only good if you want a level 5 finish.
That's right it's just lvl 5 spraying.
They said that about airless paint spraying...move with the times
What’s today price for complete spray unit ? Cheers
Unlike cement and gypsum a lime wall will absorb carbon dioxide, and gives you better acoustics and having said all the above,
the future will probably be carbon nanotubes, graphene and geopolymer cement and we'll be living like those in Ready Player One.
Can the hopper and machine be left overnight without major cleaning?
Hi Blaine great vid, have you ever tried or looked at doing Venetian polished plastering?
Second this. You can make serious money doing Venetian jobs.
This is my next venture ha! It's a future project for our channel 😉
Venetian is very easy to do if you can plaster.
I was going to ask this as well, so thank you! I like "old world" and textured wall styles. I wonder if it would be fine to do base layers multi-use plaster and top layers Venetian?
@@jodieharth Yup, you’re gonna apply a quartz primer to it anyway.
Hi, what finishing trowel was he using?? Refina superflex ?? 18
Really good vid mate, looks a great machine to use,my shoulder loves it,how much for the course?looking forward to part 2
Haha it's a bit easier! Cheers mate - thanks for watching 👍
The only thing is u will need obviously big areas ie site work. No point on domestic jobs.
What u think??
what about going on artex ? can you go straight on to it ?
Does anybody know any company's doing domestic sites in Essex?
It would be a brilliant for any information. Thanks chaps
And how much is the machine and product I bet it's dearer than multi finish
A hawk an trowel with a board an stance is the only way..
Yes it's shit
I teach airless spray plaster online “the spray coach” on instagram and facebook. Its brilliant . If you need any help come check us out 👍
What do you do about corner beads with this system?
How is the bag of "gypsum' not already set?
