3:18 According to Microsoft, the casing contains both magnesium and aluminium. 10:13 Your Surface Laptop Studio is not gaming capable because you are not buying the GPU. However, I still think the ads are not great. 11:22 The battery life good, but it is not because of a bigger battery. The M1 MacBook Pro has a 58.2 Wh battery, while the Surface Laptop Studio has 58.0 Wh (nominal) / 56.3 Wh (min). The Surface Laptop Studio has good battery because of the optimisation of the Microsoft Surface Engineering Team and/or Windows 11. This is a profound statement considering how much better M1 is than Intel chips.
That is interesting to know. I think Luke means that gaming would be bottlenecked by the CPU instead of the GPU (compared to MacBooks). I agree with you that the ads are not great. Productivity computers should be distinguished from gaming computers. I am guessing that it does have a bigger battery though. If not, then why is it so thick? I think that can only be the battery. Also, x86 and ARM work so differently that I don't think simply optimization would save the battery like that.

As always love the reviews Luke and great to see you trying out the new Surface. I think one of the big pieces you missed with the review Luke is trying out the pen and how easily it is to go from using it as a regular laptop to taking down notes as I think this would give you so many more ideas about how functional the Studio can be
I've had the Surface Book 1 since its release in 2015 (you know, the one with the weird hinge), and it's and been consistently reliable. In fact my wife, who isn't a fan of Macs, has been using the SB daily with no issues since I start using a Mac mini as my primary computer. As they say, form follows function.
I’ve got a surface book 2 which was their “top tier” laptops before the studio. Surface products are just so nice to use. I had a surface pro 3 before my SB
Luke, just occurred to me, but the A15 5-core GPU kinda corroborates your report that the M2 will have a 10 core GPU. If Apple does the same thing with the M1 (doubles A14 CPU and GPU cores), the M2, based on the A15, will have a 10-core GPU.
@@allansh828 what are you on about? All a GPU does is crunch numbers. That’s it. It doesn’t matter if it’s “integrated” or “dedicated”. Some of the most powerful gaming PCs *have integrated graohics*, e.g. the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. The words integrated and dedicated have no correlation to performance. A dedicated GT 210 would be WAY less powerful than the integrated Vega 8 in Ryzen laptops. The only reason why integrated graphics have been less powerful over the years is because of power targets. If you already have a 100W CPU, you’re not going to put a 100W GPU on the same die, you’re going to expect a system builder to use a dedicated graphics card. The M1 doesn’t take that much power, so Apple can afford to boost GPU performance without increasing power by too much.
Microsoft Surface has a premium feel, fit and finish. The hardware and the OS are tightly integrated. They work well together and out of the box everything just works. You don’t get that with any other PC maker.
Honestly, the hardware/OS integration of the Surface isn't that special. Really no different than the integration of a Dell XPS (which is premium feeling too).
11:16 : "I'll tell you what is great though". (My finger automatically moves to right arrow for skipping forward, having watched too many Linus' segues). "Battery Life". Oh OK...
This device is not light but at the same time, not very heavy. It's 1.7 KG with a 14-inch display, and 13-inch MacBook is 1.4 KG and the 16 version is 2.0 KG. So, though it does look thick, its weight is pretty normal/standard for a 14-inch laptop.
For $1600 you can get both an iPad Air and a Macbook Air. And the craziest thing is that both of them would outperform this thing. Apart from that they would look a thousand times better, weight less and be fully compatible with each other. You could even use the iPad as a second display for the Mac!! There's no way on earth that anyone in their right mind would prefer this product over anything Apple has to offer.
It is not about speed. Its about functionality. Your phn is as powerful as rocket cpu when first used. But does not mean u can launch rocket from ur phone.

Honestly with the number of viruses I have experienced on windows, and something as simple as a large word document with some photos crashing my machine, I will literally never purchase a Windows anything ever again. I would definitely rather use Linux over Windows, and MacOS more than that. If I have to “subscribe” to your word processor, I will never ever use your machine.

As someone looking to switch from the surface line to a Mac this pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I’ve also had awful quality assurance on the surface line as well
I want to know if windows is as stable as Mac OS. I stopped using windows computers in 2007 when I purchased my first Mac and never bought another PC that runs windows.
You forgot to mention the SD card slot and the Microphone jack on the other side of the Tablet/Laptop. I do agree it is chunky. Love my M1 Macbook Air. What do you think of Windows 11?
Yes, would be interested in the full switch to this device. You might want to consider getting a Surface Pen as well before you do make the switch, in order to compare with Apple Pencil experience on iPads.
I would like to see a “surface challenge” too. I think you’ll find as I have that it works great as a regular laptop and the design is premium but you’ll miss the ecosystem and it won’t work great as an iPad replacement because it is so chunky and Windows is not optimized for tablets. That has been my experience.
it ir one device. u cant replace a MacBook and an iPad with 1 laptop just like how y cant replace a windows laptop and other tablets with 1 MacBook if that made any sense.
Those limitations aren't deal brakers for people who don't care about repairability and can purchase dongles and USB-C hubs, that's it. And oh btw even Intel based ultraportables don't have many ports and about repairibilty.....oops, you can't upgrade or replace the RAM or SSD in them so, yes Intel has almost all the limitations of the M1 whilst having zero benefits.
@@loki.8435 Are you thick? The majority of PC laptops with Intel can have RAM and drive upgrades with ease... only Microsoft and and very rare few other models have it soldered on like ALL if Apples M1 machines. You are a proper blind sheep Apple fan...
One big downside to the surface line is the battery bulge. My surface pro's battery bloated so bad that the screen popped off. Lots of other folks have had problems with it too. Really bad devices for long term use.
the announcement of the Surface Studio was a real eye opener for me. After using Macs for 27 year I first bought a Surface Pro to test Windows, then a Studio 2...
It really depends on personal preference. I was gonna buy a new MacBook pro but when I see surface studio I fell in love with it. Best decision I made so far. I travel a lot by plane and I really appreciate it having to switch into tent mode and tablet mode when I watch movies or just scroll thru the internet. I also find it easy to type on the screen on tablet mode to search for movies. I appreciated the slim pen that is hidden tacked away and finally, I can take notes by hand during meetings on my tablet. The performance is not as great as M1 but it is still great, I've been editing video and photoshop. I really appreciated the screen able to get closer to my face when watching movies. There is a mode that if you just flip the screen to the back that can be a viewing mode too that not a lot of people know. That is my best watching mode so far having nothing to see no keyboards and stuff but just the big screen. I returned my Ipad pro because I needed something like desktop OS so I switched to MacBook pro. I returned the MacBook pro when I saw this surface studio. This is a game-changer. I can't tell you how many people asked me on the plane what type of tablet was that because all they can see was the screen and the next thing they saw was I was typing with the same device. I watch movies type reports edit pictures on the plane. This is a game-changer! I don't care about the looks but one passenger told me it looks like that laptop is very technical and very capable. Which it is!
So good to hear I was in between and iPad and a MacBook Air combo or Microsoft studio! What is your experience now that you’ve had it for a year or so?
i mean first orientation is laptop mode second is studio mode(for drawing like the previous studio) third one is for tablet mode I thought that was pretty obvious
I am just switching to mac from windows, I agree it looks clunky. Does it work totally offline? Or does it require internet access for most apps to work? Seems to be a thing with microshaft .
I, for one, would love to see what you think after a period of extended use. I am torn between this and an iPad Pro because this will support full art programs like Rebelle, Corel Painter, and Photoshop, but the iPad Pro is so slick. I'm looking for something that will help me make a definitive decision.
Most of ur points are talking about the Apple Silicon. While valid, I think u are missing the point. The 120hz screen, battery life, haptic trackpad, new form factor are key areas that no other laptop including MacBooks have had. For me, I always wanted a productivity laptop with 120hz. The only option I have now is the surface laptop studio.
Hello sir, I bought a used MacBook Pro, but I faced a problem, which is that it does not have a system to work. I searched TH-cam to download a system from Windows on a flash drive and I did not find it
This video is exactly what the problem is with Apple users. On a 14 minutes video, he spends 8 minutes making highly subjective personal comments on aesthetic. Then, he makes completely undocumented, unverified comments on how the Apple trackpad is better (many reviews made by actual pros said the opposite, or that the two were comparable). Finally, he spends the entire video comparing two products that are not comparable: the Studio product that has been designed for creators with its really great touch screen and pen capabilities, and a classic laptop that people will use for work, note taking, etc. He focuses on the advertising campaign rather than the actual capabilities of the products, don't even mention que pen and other key aspects of the product. I'm not saying that one is better than the other. Just that this video isn't useful at all.
Hey Luke, on my Surfacebook 3 that has 32GB of Ram & Intel Core i7-1065G7 and I got 982 Single Core & 3399 Multi Core in Geekbench 5 in Windows 11… Would you run it on your Surface Laptop Studio? I’m wondering how it compares to the base config… Thanks :)
I own and use both Mac laptops and Microsoft Surface products. Every time I pick up a Surface, it reminds me just how much Apple isn't innovating anymore (aside from the M1 CPU of course which is huge - Bravo Apple). Sure, the Surface products are still rough compared to Apple stuff, but Microsoft is slowly catching up. This new Surface laptop form factor is what Apple should have done several years ago. A pen and finger touchable Windows OS is a joy to use and the flip out and down Studio screen is the smartest way I have seen anyone do it on a laptop. Bravo Microsoft.
After watching yesterday's video regarding the Intel attack ad, this was an excellent follow up as you could make a direct comparison and still found the M1 outperforms Intel, plus the gaming on this particular device does not offer what Intel said machines running their chips would deliver.
I would prefer an AMD, ARM or GTX3060+ variant of the Surface Laptop Studio, but I’m desperate to finally completely get off the iOS bandwagon I will get this to replace my iPad Pro. Switchover from iPhones to a Galaxy Z Fold 3 and never looking back, hope to do the same with a Surface Laptop Studio
The surface laptop studio (why that word studio has to come up in Windows products...) is a very thin screen laptop. I think the major issue, in a few months, will be the hinge. Not that the hinge will become looser, but I think the cables running through it might get stretched. The design is okay but it is thicc. Why have all this garbage when you can have a solid performer without all the screen gimmicks? Sure you can design on the 14" screen and it has 120Hz and that is all nice and dandy, but the angle is awkward for drawing being that the laptop is obese in size. Anyway I wish them much success with that device, we will see what they come up with next year.
As an owner of a 13" M1 MacBook Pro I'm pretty interested in this device (to add, not to replace), although I'm probably more interested in the Surface Pro 8 (of all the stuff Microsoft released recently). I had a Surface Book but the screen was too top heavy and I ended up selling it less than a year after purchase, so this integrated design is interesting to me. I really like the idea of the modes and pen integration. Also, I don't think it's a bad looking device. It's got a unique look, and although Luke doesn't seem to like it I don't mind it and actually appreciate the unique aesthetic they were going for. The logo? I don't really see the problem with the logo placement; it has to go somewhere and in a device that has so much versatility you're bound to find it looking silly somewhere. Re: comparison of the CPU, I acknowledge that it's not as powerful as my M1 MacBook Pro, but what I want to know is 'does this thing do what I want it to do?' It might not be as powerful as my M1 but it looks like it can run games and do other tasks well, and I'd be interested in the better GPU options available. I'm glad Luke will be spending some time with this one and look forward to learning his additional thoughts.
An odd product to be sure, but I think I like it. What it does have going for it is the fact that it has a touchscreen AND a good keyboard and trackpad, which combines two of the best of Apple's range - iPad and Macbooks. Now if only Apple would give us a touchscreen Macbook ... I can always dream!
It's very easy to tell that you are a Mac user/fan. You are very into form and appearance over anything else. The bias is easy to see. Yes, the M1 chip has more cores than even the 4-core i7 model of the Surface, but Apple can't come close to the discrete graphics performance, even with the new M1 chips. Apple is not now and will not be a gaming machine for a long time. They don't care about gamers because they know AMD and nvidia own that market and will for a long time. Apple will settle for low to mid range games and showcase only them.

“That’s not great”
Points at you while not explaining jack shit of what the cpu could even do for you
Long time apple user myself , I have switch to this Microsoft/Android mix up and have been very impressed so far , I have always wanted to break away from apple ever since Steve left this world, this studio is what we need , inovate not all about profits, keep up the good work Microsoft
Love how you didn’t fanboy Apple and shit on Microsoft.
You bought the cheapest version then complained you couldn't game on it.
3:27 It kinda looks like those 2016-2017 non-touch bar Macbook Pros when it's in laptop mode!
Btw it's nice to see you review a Windows PC in a while, as I use both PC and Mac 😄
7:05 Man, who cares about where the logo is, seriously? I get being used to the apple on the back, pleasingly centered and all, but... One should never ever care about what his gear looks like to others.
As always love the reviews Luke and great to see you trying out the new Surface. I think one of the big pieces you missed with the review Luke is trying out the pen and how easily it is to go from using it as a regular laptop to taking down notes as I think this would give you so many more ideas about how functional the Studio can be
Loving the SLS! The display is one thing but this has to be one of the best keyboards I’ve used in a very long time.
Thanks
@Muhammad Ehtasam not the case if you’re doing 4k 6 camera multicams
that's kinda pathetic. We need real graphics not the most powerful integrated graphics.
@Muhammad Ehtasam gaming GPUs are tailored for gaming. Productivity is kind of an afterthought, since how powerful they are anyway.
@@seshpenguin Does the Dell XPS gets it firmware updates via the Windows update too?

Reminds me of "modern art". It's kinda cool and meaningful, but you can't stop seeing it as a hodgepodge of random crap thrown together.
This device is not light but at the same time, not very heavy. It's 1.7 KG with a 14-inch display, and 13-inch MacBook is 1.4 KG and the 16 version is 2.0 KG.
So, though it does look thick, its weight is pretty normal/standard for a 14-inch laptop.
yes I would Like to see you use the surface just to know how windows 11 feels like compared to macos
A lot of moving parts, hhhhmmm?? Interesting idea but not sure I like it or how long it will last?
Can a M1 MacBook play Halo? Warzone? This guy is high as a kite if he thinks gaming is iPad games.
Good point
It is not about speed. Its about functionality. Your phn is as powerful as rocket cpu when first used. But does not mean u can launch rocket from ur phone.
Chassis is magnesium. That's why it feels different 🙌
Quality.
What is a real thickness of this laptop? when its in tablet mode and fully closed?
Who cares? It is not a tablet, it is a laptop...
Nice unboxing, Luke. An interesting device, but i can’t see dumping my Apple devices for it.
Living in a comfortable cell is much better than having freedom for you.
"apple devices" rather telling. 😂 You can do everything on this. I have mine at the centre of my VR racing set up, I also use it for lite drawing classes and as a professional designer.

I definitely wanna see you use it for a week running day to day tasks, and see how it measures up for comparison sake.
I really think you should get the pen for it to get the most out the experience. Disclaimer: I work for MS, but not in a capacity related to Surface.
I want to know if windows is as stable as Mac OS. I stopped using windows computers in 2007 when I purchased my first Mac and never bought another PC that runs windows.
Full switch to windows would be fun to see, there's a lot of people (like myself) who use iPhones but stick to windows
I’m actually looking to switch from Mac to Windows so that vid would be v helpful as I look for the best device to do so with :)
@@williamtopping how is it shit at both? genuinely curious as to your experience
I was going to buy one until i saw the cinebench you ran....you are right wait for new macbook M2 or M1x....would like to see the switch
Yes, I would love to see you do a video on using MS laptop for a couple of weeks..
Thoughts on the supposed MBP prototype model number/base config leak?
Yes sir…we would definitely like to see a video of you trying this
He would be complaining all day because some Features aren't right as he is used to making it the Ultimate horrible experience.
The ultimate definition of a fan boy, it was never going to be an objective evaluation, it's really just put down Microsoft in favor of Apple.
And another thing, the M1 DOES have limitations fact! And it's limitations Intel doesn't have..
Which are….
@@loki.8435 Oh and if your a professional actually the M1 limitations ARE deal breakers.
@@marksapollo To be honest the other limitations, you can get by. Let me say that Android development isn't the best experience.
My heart skipped a beat for a second there 5:57
One big downside to the surface line is the battery bulge. My surface pro's battery bloated so bad that the screen popped off. Lots of other folks have had problems with it too. Really bad devices for long term use.
5:57 seriously thought you'd just broken the screen for a second there
That would be a great idea for you to run the Surface a week. Your experience and results of your testing would valuable. Thank you.
5:16 - 5:25 you should do that, we need your thoughts after a week of using it bro, great video.
"look at the size of this lad".... It's like half the weight and has a bigger screen than my macbook
Atleast you can use it during winter, keeps you warm always.
Imagine Apple giving us something similar to this 😂 it would be called the M1 iPad Pro with magic keyboard
except it would run at least MacOS...
More like the FatPad Pro if it was anything like this. Apple would make it thin, like an iPad. Oh wait...
@@jpdemer5 😂
I want Apple to do this! But alas, they won't...
the announcement of the Surface Studio was a real eye opener for me.
What is your experience now that you’ve had it for a year or so?
i mean first orientation is laptop mode
second is studio mode(for drawing like the previous studio)
third one is for tablet mode
I thought that was pretty obvious
4:03 That mode is cool for content watching, I use my iPad that way all the time.
Which is better (overall) between suface book 3 and this new suface laptop studio?
Luke your videos are so relaxing 😌
I am just switching to mac from windows, I agree it looks clunky. Does it work totally offline? Or does it require internet access for most apps to work? Seems to be a thing with microshaft .
I, for one, would love to see what you think after a period of extended use. I am torn between this and an iPad Pro because this will support full art programs like Rebelle, Corel Painter, and Photoshop, but the iPad Pro is so slick. I'm looking for something that will help me make a definitive decision.
which decision did you take in the end?
@@yamito3809 Neither, as it happens. Decided it wasn't worth the investment right now.
You missed out the biggest advantages of surface viz. Touch screen input. Makes a big change to the workflow and sadly missing on my Mac
No he didn't. He did it on purpose because to mention it (and pen support) is to admit Apple is stuck in the 20th century...lol
I searched TH-cam to download a system from Windows on a flash drive and I did not find it
this video is more like a subliminal diss to microsoft but still he managed to appreciate that surface laptop
kudos man
This video is exactly what the problem is with Apple users.
Just the comparison I was looking for. Solid video.
4:29 This is an ancient idea - I recall seeing it first on a Sony Flip laptop and then others used the same idea.
Why does everything have to be super thin? I'd rather have longevity, durability, upgrade-ability, and compatibility.
Is the i5 processor a fair comparison to M1? I think I am liking apple more these days, but that doesn't seem to be fair, price, or not.
Finally, an honest Apple user!
The best review bro keep it on
Purchased where?
After watching yesterday's video regarding the Intel attack ad, this was an excellent follow up as you could make a direct comparison and still found the M1 outperforms Intel, plus the gaming on this particular device does not offer what Intel said machines running their chips would deliver.
Can you then compare it to the M1X MacBook Pro 14” when it comes out.
I would love to see a video on you using the Surface Laptop Studio for a week!
Hi, is that the Arm surface or the Intel one? Thanks
intel
How long years does surface devices last?
I would like to hear your thoughts after using this for a week.
I'm glad Luke will be spending some time with this one and look forward to learning his additional thoughts.
not a window person anymore.
That screen looks like a future warranty claim nightmare.
It looks so much like a MacBook from the top shots. Like around 3:14.
Am more interested in the MacBook Air M1 vs Surface pro 8 comparison.
I also wish there was a touchscreen or a 2 in 1 Macbook...
