    So many wonderful pages. I do love every one if your pages and it's proof you have been at this for a while! I love your work and am inspired to take on kerby! I've been resisting! But I love your bright colors, they are beautiful in these books! I just wish you'd filmed all these amazing pages!

      I'm so glad! I know that Kerby’s drawings intimidate a lot of people (myself included too sometimes 😁) but if we don’t take the plunge and dive in we will never know what we are capable of 😉 I will eventually get around to colouring a Kerby page on camera - my focus at the moment is to finish Around the World, and after that I can expand the channel to a broader range of artists 🤞

    Beautiful finished pages I have had the same problem with yellowing in some of my books . But like you said it is what it is ❤

      Yes, it is very annoying but it’s done and there is no point labouring on it - but at least we know now and can be better prepared 🤞

    I love the vibrancy of your pages! And you really shouldn't worry about talking too much or going too slow - you are a joy to listen to. Plus I think more colourists should promote your more relaxed "I tried it once, it didn't work, won't try it again" attitude. Experimentation is good even if you're not always happy with the results and you can always try something else on the next, after all it is just a colouring book. It's not like we're in the danger of running out of pages to colour 🤣🤣🤣

      That is exactly it! I am fortunate to have enough books that I am never going to run out of pages to colour - and Dede Willingham @inkiwell always says “the artist is not going to hunt you down and say you didn’t colour the page correctly”! 😂 I know you have a similar ethos when it comes to colouring, and I hope to promote that sense of relaxation and acceptance that whatever happens is really okay ❤️

    Brilliant, as ya know I’m kinda Kerby obsessed lol. Have you bought a few sets of the FC connect pens, as you’ve coloured so many pages in many books, I’m thinking of starting to build a collection of them. You create superb pages with them. Looking back on these books can you see a big difference on how far your colouring has improved over the years? Is there a particular Kerby page that was ya favourite and you’d like to colour again to compare the two together n see the skills you’ve pick up since doing your original page? Cheers Ness xx

      I have had a few sets now, I seem to use a few colours a lot - so I dip into a back up set when I dry one out. Connector pens are really cheap here so I’ve picked up a couple of sets in sales. Do I think my colouring has changed or improved over the years? I guess so, but the biggest thing I’ve noticed is that I am more relaxed about failures! I’ve also noticed that I used to colour everything the same way, now I try and think about the style of the drawing and match that - for example with RJ Hampson and Camilla d’Errico it’s not trying to be realistic so I colour it more as an illustration or picture book style. Kerby’s style is more realistic, or Leila Duly etc so I try to colour things with realistic colours or with more blending, shading and detail. I also experiment more and worry less about wrecking a book 🤣

    Gorgeous pages Jackie, I love when you go bold and bright with the colour schemes, Kerby books look so good with them Thankyou for sharing your beautiful pictures as a collection ❤❤ and you’re right, the Snail page was a buddy colour over 2 years ago in Jan 2022! 🐌🐌

      Was it that long ago?! Time flies! Thanks for watching and your lovely comment, I think it’s fun to see a whole collection of work together - it shows the common theme/colours or personal style etc that most of us develop over time.

    Some cheap tracing paper in-between the pages helps with the bleeding a bit. Your pages are quite nice.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I've always felt bad about abandoning pages that aren't working for me but now I know I'm not alone 🙂 Some of your colour schemes made me gasp out loud with delight and gave me tons of inspiration. Cheers! 🌟

      Glad it was helpful! You are certainly not alone when it comes to abandoning pages! 😁 I liken it to reading bad books - why waste time on something you are not enjoying when there are many more possibilities to explore?! Happy colouring 👍

    What do you suggest to put behind the page you are working on to catch the bleed? Thank you !

    • @spare_room_studio
      @spare_room_studio  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I accept that it will bleed into the picture behind the one I am working on, but I nearly always place a few sheets of photocopy paper behind so it doesn’t ruin further pages - especially with alcohol markers as they can bleed into several pages. I also do that when working with pencils so it doesn’t indent the pages underneath, so it’s a good habit to always have some sort of scrap paper underneath your working page. Thank you for watching and your comment 😊

    I seldom ever do a full background. Part of that is just that I don't want to have to do all that extra work (I'd rather color things than empty space) and it tends to bog me down or make pages take much longer than necessary due to loss of motivation, part of it that it's difficult to find media that work well in my coloring situation that go down smooth (I color in bed, not at a desk so things like pastel/gelato/distress ink are just way too messy), part because my hands are not in great shape so full pencil backgrounds are very difficult, painful, and time consuming.. but also I think a lot of the time it just detracts from the subject. For example I just finished a full page in Bassford's Ivy and really wish I hadn't added the background, all the little gems and borders looked so much more distinct and vibrant without it. I do a lot of plain white backgrounds, or vignette style where there is just a halo or enough background to suggest sky/ground etc fading off to white.

      You make some very good points there, it’s very much a personal preference and subjective how we make creative decisions. There are many colourists who suffer hand and wrist pain/mobility issues which can impede their enjoyment of colouring and is a good reason to be selective about what they colour. I think that’s why I enjoy colouring as a hobby, there are so many ways to make it our own unique experience and so many illustration styles to choose from. Thanks for your comment 😊
