    Hi Jackie, great to hear Hamish is out and about with you again. I think I'm too much of a newbie to have wips, i think that must be further diwn the path ( follow the coloured brick road) for me. At present I fly by the seat of my pants - and generally prang into a low tree branch or stop sign, and there was once an incident with a barbed wire fence - wait what was i talking about? Oh yeah, kinda stumbling from one disaster to the next, and attempting to learn on the way, I do find I like to have several pages going at once though, something for 4am that's well started but needs pencil, something for after lunch that is water basing or otherwise messy or will need clean up or drying time, something simple to just put colour on at night eg a mandala or background. Loved watching you colour. Now heres a question from a tropical dweller who hates snakes. What is the best way to rework them into something else on a page? To me it feels like even stopping to look at a page in a book with one in it will conjure one up for real,nand put my fur babies in harms way etc etc.There must he some way to banish them from a colouring page. That panda page is beautiful, except for that one thing. Would love to hear ideas.

      Well, I guess comes down to the general composition of the image as to the best way to hide or erase something like a snake 😉 if it’s small, like this page, it could be changed into leaves or foliage perhaps or painted out with white acrylic paint….or if a big part of the picture a significant alteration with collage or disguising it with something else could be attempted?! I have no answers for real life - I’d run a mile or emigrate if they became a problem here! They scare the life out of me, as do Huntsmen spiders 🫣

    Hi Jackie, I really enjoy listening to your thoughts and watching you color. Well, I have many WIPs, many abandoned pages and I don't care :). I consider myself a newbie (coloring for about a year). I color using colored pencils cause I want to get familiar with them and it took some time to find my favourite ones and to find my favourite artists too. I print or copy pages on my favourite paper, so I don't care if I spill my coffee and page is ruined :) I can print it again. I've learned to recognize I've learned something while coloring not due to finishing page. I get easily bored, so I switch the pages. Sometimes I don’t know how to move on so I put the page aside for a while. Sometimes it's the ugly stage and I need a break from the page but... I've learned to recognize that after a while, when I look at the same page again, it's not so ugly any more so I do not throw out this pages any more :D And more over when page is finished... I'm the only one who sees mistakes :) For me the worst time is when page is almost done. I hate this time... I want to see it done, but I'm bored and I want a new page. I have to force myself. About pressure of the instagram... Well, when I started to feel pressure of the instagram I quitted posting for a while. For some time I felt pressure about number pages I color and post, but I'm over this now. I can't rush. If I rush I make mistakes. PS. And I've learned to not care about my English-language mistakes, I'm not a native speaker so... it is what it is :D

    • @spare_room_studio
      @spare_room_studio 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Your English is fine and I appreciate you watching and commenting! You make a great point about once you’ve had a break from the page, it often looks different or less “ugly” and that is so true. Having a break really helps to come back with fresh eyes and perhaps with fresh ideas on how to proceed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me 😊

    Agreed with your views. I’ve wanted to colour faster for a long time and came to realise some months ago I’ve been overthinking it too much and it’s become less enjoyable. When I let go and don’t plan, the pages come out better but it’s tough because of the fear in ruining the page without planning. After watching your videos and seeing how you go about them without much plan that it still turns out great has been freeing and given me the courage to do the same. Thank you.

    • @spare_room_studio
      @spare_room_studio 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For some of us, it’s a problem when we start thinking we need to “structure” our hobbies….for others it works great and helps to keep them feeling productive. When I started out learning about art and drawing etc I wanted to look like I knew what I was doing 🤣 I was also very much a perfectionist, until I realised that pursuit had sucked all the joy out of being creative. Colouring was always meant to be a free and easy hobby for me with no rules, so if it ever feels any different than that I stop to ask “why”. Thanks for watching and commenting, Jackie

      Hey, here is a thought.. just black out the subject. It would be lovely with a beautiful background and the subject in silhouette. Very unique style all your own. Only if you want of course. I'm the opposite, I hate backgrounds.. so I just don't do them, or at most do a little splash of color here or there in a vignette style.

    I have a lot of finished pages that are ugly, really ugly, because I felt I had to complete every page I started. If I was working on page and either got to point I was bored or not happy with what I was doing, I would just throw on some color to the rest of it so I could "complete" it. and start another one. From now on, I'll follow your advice and if I really don't want to finish a page, I won't. I've been able to do that with my reading hobby. If I change my mind about a book I've started, I just return it unread to the library. They don't know & they don't care if I read it or not. I didn't want to waste my time reading a book that wasn't really interesting to me, so I should feel the same way about my coloring.

      That’s really interesting Karen! I’ve been guilty of just bashing out pages in the past too! And yes, novels and other books are exactly the same - as are movies and TV….if it’s not enjoyable it’s time to just let it go! There are so many more to choose from that it doesn’t make sense to waste our time on things we don’t enjoy, especially our hobbies ❤️

    Hi Jackie! You just made Me think about the whole Coloring thing, and You made So Much Sense! I have been Coloring since 2009, and I have had some really harsh comments from 'My Coloring Friends ' about My Coloring. It is just a Hobby for Me, I am not trying to Sell Myself as being the Best of the Best, because I am Not. I have My way of doing things, that work for Me. I have a WIP, that I colored by flashlight, and have abandoned the whole book, and finally have accepted that. But it was difficult for Me to do that. It still bothers Me! I usually work on 3 or 4 pictures at a time, and enjoy it. I used to start one picture and finish it before I would allow myself to start another. I love that I have Simplified My Hobby. Great Topic for Sharing! Hi Hamish! 👍🏻💜

    Great video 😊 I agree with every thing you said ❤ I have a couple of WIPs (double page spread introduction pages from Kerby , one side finished...) but I really don't like having WIPs 😅 My solutions are a sketchbook when I just want to play with a certain type of medium or color, a entire book WIP( idea from Maia on Coloredbymaia, you just color anything in the book...) & I like to diamond paint when I am just too tired to think! And I don't have WIPs in diamond painting either !!! 😊 thank you for your time & have a great day!

    Yeah, I forgot about the "ugly stage". I've been painting for so long I just take that for granted.. but a beginner could be very put off by it, or blame themselves, or consider the page ruined. It's completely normal. Often it just isn't done and needs more layers. If you run out of tooth hit it with some workable fixative. You can always fix things, if nothing else you can cover areas with opaque paint. Try white first then a color for more coverage. The black background is the superhero of the coloring world lol, and you can black out anything not just a background. "If in doubt, black it out". I saw some beautiful pages once in Mythographic Animals where they blacked out everything on the page except the animals head, the first one was a desperation move to save a page but they liked the end result so much they did the rest of the book that way. Go full craft mode and glue new elements over the top. Use washi tape or paper collage. It may not be what you initially intended but nobody has to know that.

      I didn’t go into solutions but you are right, there are so many ways to finish a page if you get “stuck”. Thanks for sharing those great ideas.

    It's definitely a personal thing. I don't like WIPs for myself, they bug me. I often have "A " WIP, because I usually don't have time to finish a page in one go and work on it over the course of a few days to a week, but I keep it out, open, where I can see it.. and I finish it before I move on. If I don't want to finish it, there is usually a reason and I will change gears and do something different with it, but I finish it. Sometimes that is a trigger for me to rehome a book, if I just didn't like coloring in it that much. I have found several different coloring techniques that speed up the process, and also prefer small books when I can get them.. I keep hoping that will be the next fad in coloring, pocket sized books. I have purchased PDF books and printed them on half sheets in the past.. it works with some but not others, it's better if the image is drawn intentionally for a smaller size, simply shrinking them down just makes everything tiny.. which is why Bassfords mini books are so problematic. The problem with PDF's is storage, everything I have found is fussy and I do prefer an actual book. I don't plan my coloring, I color what I want on the spur of the moment.. I think that helps. I notice a lot of colorists who find themselves buried in WIPs that bother them are the ones who do a lot of planning, then find at the time they really don't have inspiration to color that page. It becomes work instead of joy, they are coloring because they "have" to or are "supposed" to. Buddy colors can have the same pitfall.. they are great fun but if you get too carried away they can take over. I do experiment in books to some extent, as until you try something on a particular paper you are never sure what is actually going to happen.. but I am usually quite conservative. For example I recently tried refilling a blender marker with plain alcohol and grabbed one of my smaller books and only did a small area on the page to test it on neo2, that way if it were a failure I could save it. If I'm really going to get crazy, or just want to work a technique or new supply on small area, I print a PDF page to use as a test subject. I think having a "junk book" is a great idea, perhaps a couple of different types of paper, for testing purposes. Some people are happy to work on multiple pages at the same time, eventually finishing all of them. Some just do a bit and move on and never finish anything. If that makes you happy, that is the only thing that matters...it's just paper, it's only purpose is to make you happy.

      Many great points, thanks for sharing Charlotte. I agree, I think there is a largely untapped market for small format books that has yet to explode 🤣

    How fantastic to hear some psychological insights from other people, thank you! ❤ My issues are both getting bored easily and not finishing pages or being distracted by 'new and shiny' things and moving on to those before finishing existing projects. This is true of my entire life too with so many other endeavours 😂 Would love to hear you chat about perfectionism and its effects on being too overwhelmed to start some pages or books - fear of failure. Thank you again. ❤

      You're so welcome! I have touched on perfectionism in one of my videos really early on, but it might be a good topic to discuss again in a colour and chat. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    Thank you, you are so right. What you say makes so much sense. I struggle with whips, & have a-lot. I love how you ask ( why). That’s good advice 👍🏻.

      You are so welcome! It doesn’t matter the problem, asking “why?” is usually a very good starting point and a good place to start brainstorming solutions! Thanks for watching.

      Perfectly normal Judith….and WIPs are not a problem in themselves, unless it bothers you. We all have very different styles and methods for working. Thanks for watching.

    I cannot have more than one wip or I have dreams about it! Lol! It literally will prevent me from a good night's rest! How ever i can workbon two pages at a time. I have one i work on on my art table and another one in a different book i work on in my bedroom at night. As long as i am making progress in both books! Lol!

      🤣 Julie, your comment made me laugh! I think it’s fair to say we all have different tolerance levels for WIPs and having WIPs is not a problem unless it bothers you - so identifying your strengths and natural working style is important and then playing to your strengths sets you up for success and happier hobby time I reckon! Thanks for watching.
