Oh, I certainly appreciate Natalie Dessay in general and in this particular aria, but the standard for Zärtlichkeit und Schmeicheln is still for the 1954-version of the almost perfect Rita Streich (1920-1987) (also on TH-cam). We should never forget the generation(s) before today. And sometimes the present singers are better , but also often the old generation reached an enormous level. But it all depends on the repertoire, one aria fits a singer better than another. But .....we should be grateful to all singers! There are many flowers in the field we can enjoy, what would we be without them
This is the best that Natalie Dessay has ever sounded in my opinion. She should have stuck to lighter lyric coloratura roles like Blonde, Gilda, Juliette, Adele, and Olympia. However, just like countless lyric coloratura sopranos, she felt the need to take on heavier, more dramatic coloratura roles like the Queen of the Night, Konstanze, Violetta, and Lucia Di Lammermoor. Vocal fach is really important to pay attention to. Coloratura sopranos often think that they can sing every coloratura aria out there, just because they can hit all of the high notes, but they're not superhuman. I think singing arias that were out of her vocal comfort zone diminished the tone quality of her voice. It's a shame that Dessay has left the opera world at only 48.
Schoolgirl325 oo...that is good advice for ALL SINGERS.! The most famous of course was the GREAT Callas. She would have had a much longer career if she stayed in only the Dramatic Coloratura Fach... but artists have always strived to grow and discover new meaning in music and new roles.....Pauline Viardot for instance....
Indeed! She used to have such a pristine voice, delicate and very bright. The clear, and audible, lack of proper refined technique, and the very poor choices of repertoire had a very sad toll in her voice. By mid 2000 she already sounded strain and drained. So very sad.
