Thanks for the tip! I dont know why garmin made an unsecured mounting. Have you consider buying a case with lanyard for extra protection?

You are very welcome 😁 Yeah its bizarre that such an expensive bit of kit is just held on by rubber bands instead. I did look at the case with the lanyard and that is a good idea and maybe something I would look at again in the future. But once the Varia is clicked into place on the mount with the additional cable ties it does feel pretty secure and don't forget your computer should warn you if it becomes disconnected from the Varia. My Karoo flashes up a warning so that is some small reassurance

Thanks. I bought the permanent mount for my road bike but will be using this tip on my X-Country bike.

Hi John, the mount is really poor, isn't it? I ended up buying Garmin's permanent mount (or whatever they call it) but I wish I'd thought about the cable tie first! As an aside, my Varia is now playing up, it loses connection to the computer or just turns itself off part-way through a ride. It's now outside warranty (of course), I expected more than 2 years from such an expensive item! I can get it working again by using IT magic (turn it off and on again) or running the connection process again, but there is obviously something wrong with it. Be safe 🙂 Phil

Yes I totally agree its an expensive bit of kit so shame they cannot supply a proper mount. I did look at the proper sturdy screw on type mounts and some are not bad priced but I thought I would try with the cable tie first and see how it goes. Some people also use a tether to attach the actual unit to the seat so if the mount fails it will be safe. Damn shame about your Variia have you made sure its got the current firmware ? I would also try contacting Garmin you never know they might help you out

@@JohnonaBike Hi John, I thought you might like an update - turns out mu Varia was still in its warranty period ,so I started an online chat with Garmin. It does need replacing as it turns out, only they won't have stock till at least August! Solution? A free upgrade to the 715 that comes with a built in camera- proper chuffed! Hopefully I'll have it in the next week or so 🙂

Sorry Phil I have only just seen this reply..... But that is great news 😁👍. Well done. See its worth just giving firms a shout when something like this happens as they will often help out when they can. I have had good results a few times with things in the past

😮 Oh no - that is awful ☹️ So did you manage to find it ? I know your computer is supposed to give you a warning if it gets disconnected but I have never tested that

I just lost mine yesterday on my birthday 😭I went ahead and got another one but now I’m going to double secure it to my bike .What happened was, I was riding my city bike and forgot to raise my seat and and had a rack and I must of hit a bump and snap off the bracket, my fault, It happened already once and I ignored to secure it better I also had air pods on listening to music,so I never heard the warning when it lost connection 😢lesson learned that’s for sure!

Yes the Varia is a brilliant bit of kit but also expensive so I wouldn't like to loose it. The mount that comes with the Varia might never fail but the cable tie is just that little extra bit of security
