When John Lydon was seven years old, he contracted spinal meningitis which put him in hospital for a year, left him in a coma that totally wiped his memory and damaged his vision, leaving him with his trademark stare. When he was well enough to go home, the doctor told his parents that he should not be allowed to relax or become lethargic and that they should constantly annoy him and make him angry all the time. When they questioned the reasoning behind this advice, the doctor replied, "Anger is an energy."

I loved this song when it came out. I used to put it on the jukebox. My grandma was Irish and whenever we left hers she would always say " May the road rise and your enemies be far behind you." Something like that anyway. Along with that memory this song is one of the best anti-apartheid songs out there. I love John Lydon.
+michelle88960 In Irish 'may the road rise to meet you'= Go n-éirí an bóthar leat (Pronounced: guh- ny-ree on bo-her lat), Lydon's dad spoke Irish as his first language iirc, so that's probably where it comes from :)
wolfe tone She's passed away now, which is why I used the past tense. But yeah I am a bit Irish, and take after her a lot, she was funny a real character. 4 foot 10 and everybody was terrified of her! Not that everybody's terrified of me, (though they should be, I hide it well!) lol.
His daring and genuine actions against the queen, the BBC and overly then popular Jimmy Savile who could get away with such power, proves he is ironically as a major anarchist punk in England in some way the greatest Lionheart in England of our times. Because he is just simply so incredibly brave person when everyone was not on his side and now he is national hero for many people today. Truly a lionheart.
well said, funny how many of those who stood against him back then love him now and claim they always have. There's a title for those people, I call them hypocrites. Rude and irreverent they called him, truthful and genuine, I'd say. Just look into his eyes during the lines "I could be right I could be wrong" He was always right, roflmao, he's just humble and clever enough to offer the possibility of an alternate opinion. So make your own minds up...arrogant or moral, anti-establishment or pro democracy? I love him now as much as back then in a Tom MacDonald vibe. I'd much rather they were schooling our kids than any politician you could name alive today, cos they'd learn morals good ethics, open-minded thought and decent values instead of greed, number one first and selfish "I'm all right Jack" doctrine.

SAME. I remember when he stated in an interview that this stare of his stems from the year-long, almost fatal case of spinal meningitis from which he suffered when he was only 7, the result of having consumed dirty water...it left him with permanently damaged eyesight & curvature of the spine...but I have also heard him, in at least one interview, mention this stare as his means of looking deep within the eyes of others, in order to try to see whether or not they were/are being honest with him, as he was so incredibly sick & helpless during his illness & he found that this "stare" worked at such times...strange but true!
"They put a hot wire to my head 'Cos of the things I did and said And made these feelings go away Model citizen in every way" this verse is very fitting in todays world

Whether you like or dislike Lydon’s music, he’s not like most celebrities who lie and put on an act. He is who he is. Sure, when he was ‘Johnny Rotten’ that was more of a persona but he has never hidden that fact, he’s addressed it directly ever since he started up PiL. Post punk masterpiece. I went to see the creator, and the experience of hearing this live will stay with me forever, as I knew it would
Saw him literally last week...the floor vibrated and we all pretty levitated off the floor when he played this!
So jealous! He needs 2 come Down Under. I need this.
Well said
@@glenthorne5936 I saw PiL twice back in 85 in Melbourne and it was everything and more. Even gave him a ciggy while he was singing.
It doesn't have much to do with post-punk tho
john has stayed true to his word, we was lucky to have such boss music to grow up with
Bloody brilliant through and through. Johnny, slagged off by media, loved by the public..co's he was and is a truth teller. If only they would have listened to him.....
Hated by society because he said what he believed, people like him should be running the country
@@grahamcheesman2252 Society hates people that speak the truth and don't conform. As for running the country, he has my vote
One of my favourite PIL songs & a memorable clip ❤ A very astute man.
+michelle88960 *I love Johnny Rotten
+michelle88960 was Irish? she is and always will be Irish, your Irish even if its by 1%............your Irish kidda
wolfe tone She's passed away now, which is why I used the past tense. But yeah I am a bit Irish, and take after her a lot, she was funny a real character. 4 foot 10 and everybody was terrified of her! Not that everybody's terrified of me, (though they should be, I hide it well!) lol.
+pietzsche Maith an fear :)
One of the (many) things I respect about sir John is that PIL wasn't a rehash of the pistols. And was still brilliant.
Nearly were, Sid wanted to be bass player but John said no cos he wanted someone who could actually play and got Jah Wobble in instead.
PiL and BAD.. both great bands they do share cool similarities!
Johnny was telling truth all the time ❤️
His daring and genuine actions against the queen, the BBC and overly then popular Jimmy Savile who could get away with such power, proves he is ironically as a major anarchist punk in England in some way the greatest Lionheart in England of our times. Because he is just simply so incredibly brave person when everyone was not on his side and now he is national hero for many people today.
Truly a lionheart.
SPOT ON....
Absolutely!.
well said, funny how many of those who stood against him back then love him now and claim they always have.
@@louiscyphre833 I agree wholeheartedly, also the utmost respect, love and care for his dear wife. He is everything a man should be, we need 650 of him in parliament instead of the thriving deceitful globalist bastards we are told we elect.
@@shonabeggs4640 am here after watching "Body Brokers" just this minute. They play 'Rise' at both the beginning and the end. V poignant. Anyways good luck to John at Eurovision ☘ 'Hawaii' he wrote for his wife Nora, he loves her so much. He really is top, top bloke. 😇
its just special
its tells truths no one can deny
"the written word is a lie", "anger is an energy".
Its everything a song should be
And then the magical jangling Johnny Marr like guitar complimenting the lyrics.
THIS SONG IS AWEEESOOOMEEEEEE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Effortlessly brilliant song from one of my all time heroes John Lydon and PIL, hard to believe it's 37 years old!!! You know there's never any bullshit with John, and RIP his wife.
❤️✌️
Well.........he supports both Israel and Trump. Pretty unforgivable.
@@SpaceCattttt woow ! Are you sure ? I read his book, very honest and funny, as you may expect, seems to be a great guy. I would have never thought he could be so nasty !

John Lydon, Morrisey, Robert Smith, the true heros really
35 years of timeless anger is an energy, love it.
J. Peterson brought me here, and I'm thankful for that, that's great music I'd have never discovered otherwise as a teenager.
John giving a nod to his Irish roots. Love it!
"I could be wrong, I could be right..."
More often than not, John has been right.
In years to come, he'll be remembered not just as a pioneer of punk, but one of the world's greatest philosophers.
#AngerIsAnEnergy
A highly intelligent & creative man - bordering on genius.
Well he was right about Jimmy Savile!!!!
You don't seem to understand what philosophy is
You perhaps need to read a bit more.
@@daynasmum529An overstatement if I've ever read one.
Love how he never breaks eye contact

I can’t batter a carpet on a bannister without thinking of this song. Every damn time. out goes the dust and in comes the ‘may the road rise with you’
"They put a hot wire to my head
'Cos of the things I did and said
And made these feelings go away
Model citizen in every way"
this verse is very fitting in todays world
Some of his finest lyrics, if not 'the'.
Maybe in part a reference to his comments about Jimmy Savile.
I may not agree with John on everything but I do admire his honesty and the fact that he doesn't fear anybody... he just tells it as he sees it. We could do with more people like that these days.
@@antonystringfellow5152I wish I had been more like that instead of tip toeing around abusive people and then eventually speaking up when a line was crossed. But sometimes you deal with something only when you cross that bridge.

How could something written over *35* years ago be the best song to come out in *2021* if it was released today?
Ahead of his time. Way ahead of his time.
@@olesivertsen5933 I'd like people to cease saying that. He wasn't alone in his mentality forty five years ago, there were many others. He is of his time. Of our time.

Anger Is An Energy
Lydon is very much a person who deserves recognition for services to music and also his stance on life really. He is Knighthood material and would like to think he would politely decline it.
I'd
like to think he's impolitely decline, but then if it came with a few quid... xxx

A timeless classic from an era when songs were sung and you could understand the meaning of the lyrics. The instruments were played and none of this sampled bollocks.

Based around an Irish benediction; "May the road rise with you", meaning may you have good fortune.
Love John Lydon. Fantastic human being.. Flawed, honest, fearless, funny, anarchic, creative.. What's not to like really?
"May the road rise with you". Ain't that a fact about our journeys in life?

I started listening to Sex pistols and PIL about a year ago. You have a great road ahead
Same, I just tried this one out. I don't like it lol I was expecting an angry punk band like the Pistols. But I always respected Johnny Rotten for Sex Pistols, so this is just another experience at least
A Model Citizen in Every Way - Thanks John - that phrase gave me the name of my band back in 1986! After these decades your work still rings totally true - you've spoken truth to power for ever and still today you anger the dishonest sheep of our world - well done - keep it going!

God Save
God save Johnny lydon
John Lydon was considered a monster, and Jimmy Saville was considered to be a hero.
Get your priorities in order people
reading Johns book at the moment, incredible stuff.
Makes for an interesting read, doesn't it? :)
Are you the 2nd Earl of Rochester?
me too
Great read isn't it? He does not dwell on the Sex Pistols and over 80% of the book is PIL. He's a prickly personality, he says what he thinks and you can't help but love him all th more for it. He slags off practically everyone but the bitterness doesn't seem too hateful, it just is what it is.
Is it worth a read, what is so interesting then do you think?
Love this track
Whether you like or dislike Lydon’s music, he’s not like most celebrities who lie and put on an act. He is who he is. Sure, when he was ‘Johnny Rotten’ that was more of a persona but he has never hidden that fact, he’s addressed it directly ever since he started up PiL.
Lydon tried to do a lot of good but nobody would listen to him, the Jimmy Saville situation is a perfect example. He tried to expose the BBC, nobody listened to him. I respect him for trying to bring the truth out.
I love everything he stands for, I also loved him in I'm a Celebrity but he walked early doors.
Gutted I was.
Without parallel. Magnificent. My favourite singer ever. A man who makes you feel like ever single word he sings is a matter of life or death. The real deal. Please keep singing JL.

One of the soundest with it blokes I think I ever had the pleasure to get to know ( not personally of course ) through his music his interviews his love ❤ of arsenal ( Johnny pure gooner ) his experience s in music industry and all the beaurocratic bollox that went with it .. he was always his own man with integrity.. respect for people in his own way.. a man that's ideas .. opinions and just generally should be given great respect as a good man and human being ... As is said in carlow .. drive on Johnny lad .. all the best to you and Nora ... An absolute masterpiece of music " rise '

He called out Jimmy Saville in the 70s and got banned by the BBC. He was definitely right
Aye.
He could be wrong... He could be right.. He was right..
The could b wrong could b right bit was about saville n co the look in his face tells all but nobody wanted to kno
And still don't want to kno sweep it under the carpet like the #govanhill setup in GLASGOW Scotland

Worst thing was no one listened to him . He’s an absolute living legend . He shouldn’t have let that go but a think he knew he had no chance because it went deeper than the bbc
