I'm a nuyorican hehe and I self taught myself Spanish but I'm not fluent and when I type Puerto Rican spanish lessons I found your channel and I am glad I can continue learning and gaining knowledge on my Puerto Rican Spanish and thank you for educated people mostly Puerto Ricans who want to learn their Spanish from their homeland.
This is how we speak with one another. With another Spanish speaker, who isn't Puerto Rican, we speak differently. There is a difference between using the vernacular and the proper. I have heard the Spanish spoken on Puerto Rican college campuses. OMG!! Beautiful Spanish!!!!
I read your story and I’m similar. I’m Puerto Rican but grew up in NY. I know a lot of Spanish but really need to learn more. I go to Puerto Rico and literally forget all of it because I’m nervous. Tuning into your channel heavy!! Thanks 😀
I used to think our Puerto Rican Spanish was not up to par however after traveling through various Spanish-speaking countries and the same goes for English each country with its different regions has within its own borders different accents and refer to things differently. Our style is uniquely ours and it is a working-class type Spanish however we all know how to speak grammatically correct Spanish when the occasion arises. The island has 93% literacy
This helped me so much Rocky !! I really love this ! PLEASE do more of these. Puerto Rican Spanish is so beautiful and it’s so hard to find places to learn it. You’re like all we got lol
As a Puerto Rican man I know Spanish it’s not my first language unfortunately but I could hold a conversation but I definitely wanna get better but this video is fire 🔥
Thank you for this! Half of my family lives in Puerto Rico. My dad never taught me Spanish and I only met his side of the family once in adulthood and couldn't communicate. I took Spanish class in high school and was decently fluent but it was a mix of Spain Spanish and Mexico Spanish so it was different. Trying to learn the accent and slang and all that from my roots. Thanks again for this!
Thank you for this! As a Puerto Rican who has definitely lost his Spanish, this was so helpful to hear authentic Puerto Rican dialect! If I study your videos enough maybe I can dare to speak it to my family without embarrassing myself!!
Really glad to see you bring back Kevin for some content. Its very hard to find educational content in regards to PR spanish, even tutors is difficult. You have my sub and notifications on because your putting out content no one else is. Muchas gracias por todo lo que haces!
This channel needs more and more content from your brother Kevin, the boricua flow in him is unmatched, he reminds me of those guys from Daddy Yankee’s movie Talento De Barrio 🙌🏾💎
Loving this video and ALL of the specifically PR videos! It’s the dialect I learned 40+ years ago and am now trying to refresh because I am FINALLY going to PR in November! 🇵🇷
Kevin's sentence wasn't fully translated. The one where he starts with, " Pues, esta bien. yo voy alla..." Can you tell me what those two phrases say?" I love this, keep going on please!
I’m Mexican American and we have a whole language in itself😂I always speak Spanglish, but I understood everything in this conversation. The only word I didn’t know was what Cristy meant with “chucheria “ because in Mexican/American Spanish it means “junk food” but it’s interesting how the some words in Spanish are the same and have different meanings
Thanks for the translation. As for the storyline, albeit realistic, she offers to cook for him, he wisecracks, then gets picky on the ingredients, adds his menu for the following day, then wants her to pay for it, and she has to tit-for-tat him to wash the dishes. He sounds like a real "MAMAO". Other than that, "todo chevere".
This is amazing! I've watched a handful of your videos over the last few days and I've learned more than I have in the 3 years I've been living on the island. I'd love to know a little bit more about why in Puerto Rico the diminutives are added to everything: the -ita and -ito. I'd also love more videos on pronunciation. Knowing how the sounds work is helpful because I get lost in conversations due to not recognizing what I'm hearing. Finally, if you offer any courses, tutoring or small group instruction I'm definitely interested in learning more. Thanks again for your videos. They are EXTREMELY helpful 🙏🏾
Puerto Rican native speaker here. Is it OK to point out a few mistakes in the transcription? They are teeny tiny, but as someone who used to work doing transcriptions, I caught them: Tú engranas los ganduies instead of Tú has granado gandules? which makes sense because she is asking him to take the gandules out of the pod compra lo de hoy y lo que vas a cocinas mañana (without the S in both lo) Yo me *comería* una pastita instead of Yo me comeré una pastita (comería = conditional, comeré = future) There are instances of aspired S but I didn't wanted to type the whole thing. My husband is TexMex and the first time I told him "me voy a fregar los trastes" his face, LOL 😂
I was born and raised in Ponce Puerto Rico and actually how she said it was; ?Tu esgrannas los gandules? (We tend to say things technically wrong like that). Also that does not mean taking them out of the pot, it means take them out of "la vaina" (not even sure how you say it in English).
Thank you so much for this. I study my formal Spanish daily, but I need tools like this to help me sound and understand PR Spanish better. Poco a poco!
Such a great video… when we were there this is exactly the accent of Puerto Rican Spanish.. thanks so much for this video! I wish my family taught me earlier how to speak Spanish but it’s never too late . Gracias Rocky!
For me being Nuyorican, they always said my Spanish was bad. I understood everything said in this video. I always speak broken and my grandma always used to say watch novelas if I want to learn better...lol.
Gracias Rocky por otro vídeo útil! I’m taking formal Spanish classes but at the same time learning so much more from your videos! Very helpful and I love this one.
I'm puerto rican. currently trying to teach myself to talk in Spanish and have tried other apps. They have helped but I know I could earn faster and better then what I've been taught. I feel like this learning style is more for me.
Con razón está lloviendo. Technical translation may be "with reason it's raining" but the correct translation is: No wonder it's raining. It's important to translate the THOUGHT, not each word of a sentence; otherwise it will sound somewhat odd.
Tengo una amiga de honduras y ella me dijo que no puede entender a los puertorriqueños. Y le pregunté “cómo así? Eres de honduras.” Y me dijo que hablan muy rápido. Así que yo traté de hablar con un puertorriqueño y no pude entender nada. Y español es mi segundo idioma, lo hablo con fluidez. Muchas gracias por el video fue muy bacano.

Great! I love that response because many people are afraid to try to learn a type of Spanish because they believe they won't be able to understand other types of Spanish. But we all understand each other well, especially when speaking amongst each other.

Question, he said fuiste la que invitaste a mi. Shouldn’t it be fuiste la que invitó a mi? A professor told me that when you say el que/la que/ quien, then the conjunction is always 3rd person.
