📝 Simple Overview 📝
Decentralized Finance is one of the hottest topics on the crypto grapevine right now. That’s not surprising seeing that within the space of two years DeFi has gone from having less than $60 million locked in the ecosystem to nearly $800 million at the time of this video’s release.
💰 What is DeFi? 💰
DeFi takes products and services from traditional finance and decentralizes them by replacing middlemen with smart contracts.
👯 What Are People Doing In DeFi? 👯
Today, the most common uses of DeFi are:
Borrowing money
Supply money to earn interest
However, the key thing here is that this all takes place outside of the traditional banking system. That means no KYC, no need to get approval from anyone, no credit scores, no requirement for a bank account and no descrimination based on where you live.

The emerging DeFi ecosystem is already home to a wide range of platforms like DeFi loan comparison sites, automated trading solutions, lending platforms, non-custodial margin trading platforms and much more,
🔮 The Future of DeFi? 🔮
Decentralized Finance has already seen phenomenal growth over the last few years. However, there are over 1.7 billion unbanked people in the World excluded from the traditional financial system who could benefit from DeFi.
Imagine if you are living in a developing country with high inflation. DeFi gives you the opportunity to get out of your local currency and hold USD via stable coins like Dai. Even better, you can then take that Dai and lend it out at 5+% interest on DeFi platforms like Compound Finance. DeFi already offers people the tools to hedge out local currency risk and that’s a pretty big deal in countries like Venezuela.
Although DeFi loans currently need to be over-collateralized, I imagine it will only be a matter of time befer under-collateralized loans are available via a form of DeFi borrowing reputation system.
🤔 Problems With DeFi? 🤔
It’s hard for the average person to access DeFi and that's due to friction between the crypto and traditional finance ecosystem. That’s where tech solutions like Nimiq OASIS can come in by providing FIAT smart contracts which enable non-custodial crypto:fiat trades. This solution is set for launch this year in partnership with Ten31 bank and has been developed by the crypto project Nimiq. Adoption of this solution certainly has the potential to make it much easier for people to access the DeFi ecosystem.
Another major issue facing DeFi are smart contract bugs. These could result in DeFi users losing access to a significant amount of funds and it’s even more worrying seeing that bugs are not unheard of in smart contracts.

Watching this video a little over a year later and the amount on DeFi Pulse is 32.5 billion!
I paused the video to check it right when he gave the number, and then scrolled down just to post this. Now it's over $40.5 billion (down from a peak around $46Bn a week ago, but the value of cryptocurrencies has gone down, which would account for that.)

Been in crypto since 2015 but only recently discovered the fascinating world of DeFi. Ever since I have been fully immersed in learning and indeed participating and trying every interesting offer there is. Even by taking MakerDAO loans and buying DeFi fractional real estate to earn rent and property appreciation. Amazing stuff. Your channel is now one of my go to places and yes, I think DeFi has the potential to do what ICOs did but let’s hope without the many scams.

The best projects in the defi space are DMG and FNX (just came out, built on wanchain and has partnerships with xrp and ethereum aswell as Elrond - low circulating supplies and low mcap and have great tech, great team. great content. thanks

Great video, very informative! You should look into or maybe even do a video on Nash/NEX its one of my favorite projects in the Defi space, next to REN. They're making a decentralized exchange that feels like a traditional centralized one, with all the fancy order types and cross chain trading. Their token NEX is a licensed security in Lichtenstein (one of the first security tokens as far as i'm aware) and can pay dividends gathered by trading fees on the platform if locked up in a smart contract on their exchange. They don't have Bitcoin trading pairs yet but those should come this quarter!
Thanks for the suggestion. I just took a look at the Nash exchange now. Really interesting indeed! The UI is even more simplified than most large centralised exchanges. I also see that they have their own browser plugin instead of metamask. Have you used it? Keen to get a first hand experience. 🤔

I saw in one of your TH-cam replies you said that you 'prefer 0x 'ZRX'' as they are making bigger moves (In terms of DEFI projects), what is your stance on this now???
Great content, well explained, you just earned a sub. I believe once a bull market kicks in Defi will dwarf what ICOs did in 2017. But I have a feeling it’s gonna be a messy story after a correction as newbies in crypto will see the appeal of collaterized loans in Defi and hop on it probably when we’re at a peak just to leverage more crypto assets and if they fail to exit at the right time things could end very nasty. I believe a lot of people will have their assets liquidated to settle their loans if they do not do it in the right time. This is the best time to hop on Defi with the start of this bull market .If you’re involved in a strong project you can easily 10x your investment and settle your loans and be in good profit( almost like free money). That’s just my 2 gwei lol

Top class content! So why would one use a collateralized loan in crypto? I understand that in normal life you could put up a bracelet as collateral for fiat. But in the defi world wouldn't it make sense to just use what you already have? Pls explain

Looked at it briefly so its only a first take. Great idea that could bring transparency to the global fund industry. It could also democratize the usually exclusive world of global fund managers. The same benchmarks for all managers are immediately verifiable on the blockchain. Also, taking into the token economics - there is a direct link between network usage and value of the token (built into protocol). So this means that as more people start building funds on it and investing in it, price should rise. Looks really interesting. I need to do a complete review on it tbh but thanks for putting it on my radar 💯

Just one question, under what circumstances do you think someone would want to take out an "over collateralized debt position" aka loan with their eth that is worth more now than the loan amount? Why would you put down more money in the value of eth to get less money back in the value of usdc pax or dai?...
The only reason I can think of is if someone had the money to buy Either years ago and was collecting it but then fell into financial troubles so needs a instant loan but doesn't want to cash it out completely and loose their eth?

It seems to me that defi is limited to borrowing more money to buy more crypto. You have to put a greater value of crypto in as collateral to borrow Dai correct? Can borrowing on defi be done without collateral to ... buy a house for example? How would that be done without a central figure to enforce payback of loan if someone defaults without collateral?
