Rtings obsesses WAY too much on technical measurements. For headphones, for TV's. Sometimes the subjective experience can't be measured. These headphones sound great. And he says they aren't as bright as the 600's. I can't speak to that, but they are absolutely brighter than my 660s's.
Open back headphones also sound like everything is in your head. Only binaural reproduction can make a pair of headphones or earphones sound like the soundstage is outside of our heads. Open back soundstage sounds more open than closed backs, but this doesn't mean the soundstage is outside of our heads. In fact, the central stereo image is always right in the middle of our heads, regardless of open or closed back. Closed backs sound less open because you can hear the reflection from the inside of the headphone cups, which signals to our brains a physical boundary or wall that the soundstage is limited by. An open back may not actually have a wider soundstage than a closed back, but it won't sound like there is a boundary to the soundstage. As a result, open backs will sound more open and natural. Not necessarily bigger or wider "soundstage", and certainly NOT soundstage that is outside of the head, unless of course you are listening to binaural reproduction.
It's a good idea to keep a consistent SPL in all of your listening tests. That's my advice. Equal Loudness Contour matters a lot, and the audiophile community and headphone reviewers completely ignore it's effect on our perception of frequency response.
As an audio engineer and audiophile, I give the Sennheiser 620s a solid score of 7/10. It's 8/10 with some minor EQ adjustments. The Sennheiser HD400 Pro is basically a 10/10 pair of open back headphones.. The only major downside is that it lacks sound isolation. There are much more expensive headphones out there, but IMHO the HD400 Pro is just perfect in every way. I can rely on it to be transparent and faithful to the source. The key is to make sure you are listening to the HD400 Pro at Studio Reference Level. If you like to listen ear damagingly loud, then the HD400 Pro will start to sound harsh due to Equal Loudness Contour.
But what do you mean? Can you try to formulate your criticism a little more constructively? I always foumd the reviews very helpful and would like to know if there are any problems with credibility of Ratings. I would be pleased to receive an answer.

I mean I think it's understood that they sound RELATIVELY open compared to closed back.

Poor frequency response. Hole in the upper mids/treble and poor bass extension. Get it together Sennheiser
