Saving Weight! My Swing Out Spare Tire Build for my 4Runner

  • Follow along while I build my own DIY swing out spare tire carrier for my overland 4Runner. I wanted a swing out bumper that didnt add hundreds of pounds of steel to carry my spare tires and fuel cans. I hope you enjoy!
2022 Update - This is a video with my old 4Runner. I do not plan to make any kits for this as time and life is too busy at the moment. I hope this encourages you all to think out of the box when building your overland rig.
If you enjoyed this video, please make sure to hit that like button and subscribe, and I will try to release more tech related videos in addition to the Vlogs! Sorry for the length and thank you for sticking through it all!

AtoZ Fab Mega Hinge Kit - amzn.to/2eV8VnG
Powertec Toggle Clamp (lg) - amzn.to/2eUZip0

National Hardware Steel Door Hinge - amzn.to/2u6fVQw
Rupse License Plate LED Bolts - amzn.to/2uHiTyj
I purchased all of these parts from Amazon (I like their return policy! Haha!). All tube steel was all purchased from a local metal supply shop and the Angle/Plate was purchased from Home Depot. I could have saved some money by getting it all from the metal supply shop, but I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted and the shorter cuts made transportation easier.
As for a future kit, I unfortunately, dont have the time or resources to make. I do hope this inspires you to know you dont always have to buy whats already made. Get creative and think outside of the box!

I've been searching out swing arm videos for tips on a project I have in mind, and I've gotta say, this is by far the best one I've found. The presentation was thoughtful and informative. Your thought process was clear, your ideas solid and your final product well executed. "I'm not a fabricator", lol, I've got news for you, a lot of "fabricators" could take some pointers from you! Nice job, and thank you!

Thank you so much for the kind words! Im just glad it can help out some. I was hoping to possibly make these one day as a kit, but situations changed. So I’m just glad the walk through on my process can still help others.

Agreed. Very well executed, informative on your thought process, straight to the point without "excess chit-chat". I'm about to undertake the same project for my '13 Nissan Xterra PRO-4X 6spd. Your video will be the core of my project. Thanks.

@@irwinjimenez just do a hitch tyre/ gear carrier, don't have to cut your bumper can remove it when needed, no one to steal your shit when parked in town, put it on to off road, and can put it any car you own and remove and take it with you when you sell the current car and change to a new one.

Well done, I enjoyed the video. If I may make an observation, your center latches are situated in such a way that actually pull downward on the swingers, increasing the load on the hinge mounts that are attached to your frame. If you can orient the latches so that they pull UP, or pull against a solid seat that can support the weight of the swinger, I believe you’ll have a great design.

You are genius I hope you submitted a patent for your idea. You definitely have TH-cam Marketability. If you can put your plans to paper you could just sell your ideas. Should put this link on Toyota4Runner.org. I'm sure a lot of 4Runner owners could benefit from your ideas and ability bring those ideas to reality. I don't think I have ever written I commit on a TH-cam video until now. You must be a genius . While that mod is not exactly my style it is without a doubt impressive ingenuity. I'm sure it appeals to a lot of 4Runner owners out there. Pretty good camera work, just need to put a little more entertainment factor on it. Good Luck and keep up the Good Work.

I was scared with the leverage with brackets cantilevered off the frame. Since its not tied in to a steel bumper, doing a dual greatly reduced the weight/leverage on those hinges and brackets.

(so many wrecks on the side of the road). having heavy spares and fuel placed high or extending the end of the vehicle places incredible stress on the vehicle suspension and chassis.
