Great review as always Sam! I saw this magnifier for the first time this week. A patient brought it in, as I always ask them to do, and immediately seeing 10X on the rather large box, I thought "this is going to be the usual Amazon junk." However, it actually is VERY NICE, I have to agree! It's a shame that it's so grossly mislabeled.
I’ve been trying to find one that the commission for the blind gave me years ago. It was a little pocket 8X magnifier had a nice LED light which made reading price tags easier, but every time I find it on eBay it’s like over $100 it’s ridiculous lol
What would the lens diameter be for a magnifier for a fair quality reading lens with 10x magnification (the print is very very small). By reading, I don't mean an eyepiece like jewelers use planted on their eye. The magnifier needs a significant eye relief distance. Also is there a way of testing them to determine the magnification. I know how to find the focal point of a lens via projection of a far off subject thru magnifier onto a wall for sharp image and measuring wall to magnifier. But how to calculate the magnification from this ?
For a couple decades I have had an original Magna- Lite 300, which is also a 10x lighted magnifier. After many scratches I went to update to the very same model and the quality of the lenses are not the same the field of view was distorted. I have tried several alternatives from Amazon, but all things optical, ordered online are misrepresented in my opinion. Then when things start getting expansive It's very daunting and frustrating especially trying to update a pair of bioptic glasses from the 1980s. Really like your content you help a lot of people! Keep up the good work ✌️
Sam, thanks for the objective review. Just checked Amazon and the magnifier is listed for just under $12, but interestingly the customer ratings are either very positive or they are negative. I think I'll stick with my trusty old Eschenbach. Anything new in small hand held electronic magnifiers?
After having to sign a ton of documents lately and needing my wife to direct the pen to where I needed to sign, something like this might be useful, especially with the LED. Definitely would benefit from a rechargeable battery with USB Type-C connectivity to charge, even if it was a small battery that only gave a couple hours of charge.
I bought one on Amazon that said it was 30X. Very similar to the one you demonstrated. Good magnifier but not 30X. Or maybe I couldn’t see the dot between the three and the zero in the ad. I should’ve used a magnifying glass to read it🤔. I did buy a 6X several years ago and it works great for me. But I’ve dropped it so many times it easily Falls apart now. Any suggestions for a 6X magnifier? Thanks
Lol, you’re probably right, they don’t even make a 30 X magnifier! I’ve always been a fan of Eschenbach magnifiers, a little on the expensive side but high-quality. I’ve also been impressed with magna pros magnifiers on Amazon. I’ve done a video about them before. Very affordable and decent quality. Won’t last as long as Eschenbach but at a fraction of the price, they don’t have to!
@@theblindlife today I was using what is left of my magnifier on the computer screen. I put it temporary in my lap and when I picked it up do use it on the screen again I noticed it wasn’t magnification. That’s when I realized that the lens had fallen out and was laying in my lap and I only had the holder in my hand. I guess I need to go to Amazon and search again and search for that one that I can’t pronounce yet
Maybe I'm behind the times, but all my text-to-speech software can make of your miniscule emoji is "?". and with my eyesight, a visual inspection does no better.

Actually yes, in fact I have a video coming out in the next couple of weeks on a new more affordable handheld digital magnifier.

I did a video a while back about magna pros magnifiers which are available on Amazon. They are pretty good quality, full LED, and rechargeable.

Why does the company still insist on listing it as a 10x magnifier? Doesn't say much for their credibility.
I guess for being 3x great, but the manufacturer claiming it’s a 10x is just not cool. 👎🏼
