I work for an independent living center, and we just got a grant to buy AT items as part of a lending library so that we can show our consumers things that can allow them to live independently. I will be stalking your page quite a bit because I fell in love with the tactile icons for household use, and now this?? OMG, I'm in heaven.
I absolutely love the Penfriend. It’s super easy to label everything! I have files of paperwork holding clear pockets where I store important documents, all voicetagged. I have waterproof labels on clothing and inside laminated card pouches that I attach to bottles and frozen food containers! My credit card even has one that I can play when I need to put my card details on or into something manually! Sam, did you know you can cut the stickers in half, or quarters for the biggest ones? Each segment will share one single recording. So if you have 4 black tshirts size medium for example, you can record a laundry tag to say that, cut it into quarters and affix one price each to the clothing label or at the left inside seam and they will all work! If you re-record on one, they will all say the new message.
Sam, you always do such a beautiful job explaining all the aspects of the technology you share. I love my pen friend and I actually have two of them: one is in my kitchen and I use it for the many spices and spice blends I have. The other is to help me to keep, my earrings organized that I use for my videos as I have several hundreds of pairs of those. Love this tool!
I was gifted a pen friend, not the third version obviously. I absolutely love it. I have labeled many things, and it makes me so much more independent. I doubt I would use all the extra new features of the pen friend three so I am perfectly happy with what I have.
We use this in the school system for students who will not be a braille reader and their strength is audio. Its great it also has round magnetic discs to record onto. Thanks Sam!!
I have a pen friend the old version. I use that for spices because I have their own container on just refill with those. I use my WayAround for clothes and stuff that can go in the freezer. On my cleaning supplies, I do use the WayAround with a rubber band to go through the one hole buttons. This and everything else I do makes my life easier.
Im from India and i know people who work in this startup company which makes QR codes for lablelling and you can scan witj your phone. This is also interesting! I don't need this though buy i still like your videos u explain really well. Hi I'm Abdullah and i have low vision due to retinopathy of prematurity
i'm sighted but AuDHD & a "smart pen" that records audio has made a huge difference for me - can see how helpful this could be, too just wish they'd integrate bluetooth so could actually be discreet & not worry about tangling up headphone cords
I have found small round magnets that are the exact size of the small round stickers and they stick well and I use them on the fridge for appointments and lists, etc. also, I have found you can tape over them with cellophane tape and still be able to read them I have tried different types of clear tape and it all works. Also, I found that. Laminating sheets work as well, which I found out by accident. I dropped one entire card onto one and could not peel it off and I thought all was lost, but it worked! Also figured out that these little stickers don’t always stay stuck on some things that’s why I tried the tape, they stick very well to anything that is on gloss like jewelry tags, and the like The first two generations, have a port for plugging in headphones with a jack and of course they have the SSd Thank you, Sam and Rachel. You put out some awesome info! 6:07
@SarahMcNabb you can pause the recording and restart it by pushing the top large round button (the on/off button). It won't rewind/fast forward though. The pause function is handy for longer messages and things like recipes so you can pause at different steps
I am so happy I found your channel. I am a little less frightened about my rapidly diminishing vision. At this point, like you, I have no central vision and the glaucoma is worsening so... But, i am now getting comfortable with assitive technology, thanks to you and this channel. This tech looks like a winner and I think I will be getting one very sooon. I do love my audiobooks and music so I'm curious, is the PENfriend Bluetooth capable or should I just stick with my phone?
Hello , Hope you are doing well. My aunt watches your channel and she is blind . She wants to ask you if you offer any private classes through zoom . It will be paid favour . Thank you 🙏
I have the first generation and the pen friend too. I have discovered that there is a pause if you click the on off button really quickly, it will pause then you just click it again and you can record some more or listen some more also I do not like the fact that the third one the timer runs out After three minutes just like the first one the second one however lasts for 10 minutes, so how can you record for hours and only a few minutes I never could get my head around that, L O L
you can use the headphones to listen to audio books. With the RNIB audio book library, PF remembers where you last switched off. Our testing machine shows that the 2 triple A batteries plays back for over 5 hours. My name is Robene Dutta, the inventor of PF
i just received my pen friend. any advice for sticking a label on something that can be attached to an item rather than sticking a label directly onto the item? thanks.
Another company doing something very similar is Way Around. Search for it on youtube and you'll find my videos. Also have videos on how to recreate something very similar using both an iPhone and an Android phone. You can search on my channel for the keywords voice labels.
Hi my name is Diane and I am totally blind. Be my ai is quite useful for identifying things. But I also have a Penfriend. I have quite an extensive collection of essential oils and fragrance oils all labeled with the smallest Penfriend labels. Do you know if Penfriend will ever have an iPhone App, as I don't have a computer. I don't seem to need one.
These are an alternative to NFC tags. These labels are specific to the pen reader. For example, if Sam labelled his medication with the name and doctors instructions, only his pen would read it. I could record my own information for that same tag, “Sam’s meds - do not take!” His recording and mine would both work for us as individuals.

that's an awesome hack!
This looks like a fantastic option for those of us who are a little less tech minded. Thanks for featuring this product.

🎉🎉🎉 wow, I’m new to Penfriend! This is really cool and extremely versatile.

Sam How do I tell one set of labels from another? Like regular from laundry labels?
Hi I liked the Penfriend, but I wish it had a pause, rewind and fast forward option. I prefer Navilens codes instead

@@samanthamassimino7400 yeah ok thanks

I do depending on the need. Reach out through email and we can discuss it further - sam@theblindlife.net
It looks like a handy tool

Will it read the audiobooks with headphones also?
yes

There is no link to the Pen Friend here, Sam. There’s no description info here at all.
i just received my pen friend. any advice for sticking a label on something that can be attached to an item rather than sticking a label directly onto the item? thanks.
Is there no app to do these things? Because i dont see myself carrying the pen friend wherever i go. Its all kinda pricy
I find that we choose to be able to afford whatever it is we really want.
I suggest spraaksticker. I'm dutch. So the translation is voicesticker. It's free. Don't know if it's still free.

sO TWO WUESTIONS i HAVE WHAT IS THE BATTERY LIFE ON THE PEN, AND SECOND DOES IT CONNECT TO BLUETOOTH
Not sure of the exact battery life but I know it lasts quite a while. No Bluetooth unfortunately
I have something like this. Don't know what generation. But I have an app to replace this.
translate video in spanish?
So why do these things have to be so$$$$&&?
Much cheaper in the UK
Isn’t this just an overly expensive way to read NFC tags?
