Chris I really appreciate your message at the end of the video. I consume more on youtube than from any other place I'd say, and your channel is one of my favorites. I'm amazed at the quality of your videos and am convinced that with the quality of production and content, this channel is destined to grow. TH-cam makes it tough sometimes and everyone likes to talk about the algorithms but if there's any justice in this platform and any sense of the quality rising to the top, you'll be on the way up. Amazed you started out at 5k this year. Hope more exponential growth to come :)

I started reading the original Amazing Spider-Man, and I’ve been enjoying it, especially the art done by Ross Andru. I created a reading list of comics I wanna check out as well as a list of artists (comic and otherwise) I want to study. And most importantly of all, I’m closing in on starting my own comic, and a lot of that is thanks to you.
This channel showcases some fascinating creators and analyses of their work. One thing I appreciate a great deal is how many comics from yesteryear you feature. A lot of them I’ve never heard of or only knew of in passing. For instance, I never thought to look up Dick Tracy; it just never would have occurred to me, especially since I had no clue it was a comic strip (I thought it was just a radio/TV show. But now it’s on my reading list to study for inking techniques, pacing, and character design.
Depression hit me HARD this year, and most of the time, I can’t see the point in going on or doing anything. But seeing another person feel as passionately about the artistic value of comics and the work creators put into them is heartening. A lot of the times, I’ll have some of these playing while I work on my own comics, and it helps a lot. I’m already taking something for my mental health, but every little bit helps. In addition to the educational aspects, your show is really funny, and I’ve laughed out loud several times during several episodes. Plus, it’s well-produced enough to be aesthetically pleasing and enhance the experience, but it still feels handmade enough to feel warm, personal, and tangible.
I wish you the best for the New Year and all those to come. Thank you for the entertainment, the education, and just being you. God bless~ 👋

Hey man! I really wanna comment! I stopped reading comics back in the late 90's as life just took over. I was never really a fan of mainstream American superhero books , growing up in the 70's in New Zealand I was mainly reading 2000ad and later on Heavy Metal. I did start reading US books though when some of the English writers and artists moved on the US scene (mid to late 80's i guess), but i also was a huge fan of Manga (notably the books Blade of the Immortal, Alita, Berserk and Grey) back then. My faves and my knowledge is kind of stuck in a late 80's early 90's niche...Stray Toasters, Metropol, Mad Man, Marshall Law these kinds of US books.
I discovered you channel earlier this year and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! You offer sophisticated, well researched, very passionate reviews and adult critique of a medium which sadly in the west is regarded as kids stuff. I especially LOVE the oddball ones you critique or when you drink as you find tropes! its hilarious. NEVER STOP being this guy! xx
I have been inspired to go look at some of these books as comics will always be in my blood and i am glad i have you as my guide now!

Love this channeI! I look forward to every upload. It's amazing how much it's grown over the past year -- you've really found a niche! Here's to an equally wonderful 2019!
P.S.: Do yourself a favor and check out Black Hole by Charles Burns if you haven't already! It's a bit of an older book (2005), but its unique art style drew me to it a year or two ago, and I just keep coming back to it. I'll never forget some of the imagery from that book, and its narrative is similarly enthralling. It concerns the lives of a group of highschoolers in the wake of an outbreak of an STI that causes horrific mutations in those afflicted. Fittingly, Burns blends the grotesque, surreal, and melancholic in both his art and story create a feeling of dread and horror, but also nostalgia. It's a really good read; the first time I finished it, I just sat in my building's laundry room for hours, staring at the walls -- I can give no higher praise. I know it's not from this year, but I think it's well worth y'alls time!

*FUN* *FACT!* Black Hole, the graphic novel itself, made a cameo appearance in the second Andy Serkis Planet of The Apes movie. It appears in the scene where the son of the engineer is bonding with Maurice, the Orangutan. The book is a great choice for this scene because of the themes shared by both the Planet of The Apes franchise and by this graphic novel, man's cruel collective intolerance and alienation of the different and the diseased.

I also got into Spawn by Todd McFarlane and this series really surprised my in a positive way. I really enjoy it. The story keeps evolving and the changes do not feel forced but keep surprising me.
A graphic novel I'd like to recommend is Typex's Andy by Dutch artist Typex. He made a large graphic novel of more than 500 pages about the life of Andy Warhol, and i think this book is a piece of art by itself.

Chris is it? I JUST found your channel in the last month or so. If you don’t mind me saying you are definitely one of my fave shows on YT. There’s a guitar gear nerd channel by Phillip McKnight that I feel like your channels are “spiritually” not brothers but certainly related. I’d encourage any comic people that like any type of music gear, especially but not specifically guitar stuff. So yeah, like I say lately between you and a certain Robot, brain from space and their green haired teacher, you have locked me to a screen for unhealthy amounts of time. I’ve been buying books since Defenders 107. Before that I’d get the odd 1 but with no real awareness. Richie Rich, Archie, Dennis etc. But Defenders got me going. Savage Sword came shortly after. I’m sorry everyone for the essay but I just wanted you to know where I’m coming from and that I truly do love the medium and I also love your channel. I’ll hit you on Patreon a little later this year when the dust settles from December ‘18. Keep the faith man. This is really good and important stuff. Thanks.

My favorite comics of 2018 have been Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen :The Tempest.
“What a strange long trip it’s been” ☺️
As well as Jungi Ito’s Frankenstein (his adaptation of the same novel by Mary Shelly.)
My only gripe with Ito’s manga would be,
    SPOILERS********
    1. His depiction of the monster killing and eating a bear,
(Shelly’s creature is a vegetarian in the novel)
    2. His depiction of the creation of the monster’s mate. (Which for me was a bit over the top)
But every thing else about Ito’s manga was superb, with a monster that’s right up there with Berni Wrightson’s depiction of the creature.

Now, it does seem that there a few points that don't quite gel with the first run, like how Masquerade's powers work. Hopefully, after the current storyline they can explain what happened in the time between the first run and the current. And they will show some of the other heroes. Personally, I think the static at the end is suppost to mean that Scott's depression is somthing that will stay with him forever, but will have control as long as he has friends and family to support him. And no, I don't believe he's dead.

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles is the best book of the year, as far as I'm concerned, and puts itself in my best books of all time.
The new run on MAD has been really great. As angry as the book has ever been.
And I never knew how much I needed Shirtless Bear Fighter.

I feel special mention ought to go to Marvel Comics Digest and the Walmart-exclusive DC Giants. It might seem weird to recommend reprint collections, but as a slightly lapsed fan whose main fandom has been almost entirely based in the movies, it was great being able to access worthwhile material at the checkout line and get a secondhand glimpse at why the classic characters of the superhero genre have stuck around so long and touched so many lives. I've discovered new favorite characters (Sideways comes to mind), stories (the first Scott Lang issue of Ant-Man and Batman Hush have been surprisingly enjoyable), and runs (pretty much everything in the DC Giants is a definitive take on a character or team, go figure, but I don't mind being spoiled) through both the selections chosen for each book and the ads running alongside. (I actually just bought volume one of Scott Snyder's new Justice League run based on reading the ad alone. Looks plenty meaty and iconic, just what I'm in the mood for at this time.). For the first time in what feels like ages for me, I'm genuinely excited to browse the checkout shelves and see what's new with all my hero "friends." I do still support my local LCS when I can, but supplementing my reading habits during family Walmart grocery runs is a bit more convenient at the moment, a period I hope continues for a good long while.

Not sure if I can even piece together a full top 10 but some amazing comics that have either started, gone into, or finished this year for me are:
    - Platinum End by Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata
An amazing manga and I would say the duos best work and they have made multiple smash hit series
    - Doctor Aphra by Keiron Gillen
Probably the best character addition to the Star Wars galaxy especially in recent years a fun, funny, and adventurous character and stories along the way.
    - Skin & Earth by Lights
Great concept comic series by a great indie pop singer in which the first six issues tie in with her most recent album and is fantastic even as a stand-alone series.
    - Snotgirl by Bryan Lee O’Malley & Leslie Hung
A hilarious and mysterious in going series by the mastermind of Scott Pilgrim and many graphic novels with some of the most beautiful artwork I’ve seen in a comic by Leslie Hung.
    - Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith by Charles Soule & Giuseppe Camuncoli
The best Vader series of all, probably beating Marvels last by Gillen, this time picking up right after Revenge of the Sith and includes so much love for the character like I’ve never seen before with so many tie ins to Soules previous additions to the Star Wars galaxy.
Will definitely pick up some of your picks and here’s to another year of great comics! 🍻

This year I've enjoyed Scott Snyder's Justice League, the story and art have been good, but the reason I mention it is more for the fact that he brought back the Will Payton Starman to the DC universe, I liked the Starman comics when they first released in the late 80s and having him appear in JL was such a nice surprise, and I find there aren't many surprises left in modern day comics what with internet spoilers and advanced solicitations.

I love a lot of comic books this year but of i can do a top 3, it would be:
    - "Death or Glory" is an amazing story with great artwork...
    - "The seeds" by David Aja, great storytelling, and works with a lot of interesting concepts.
    - And "Warbears" by Atwood, a good drama about Canadian artists during de WW2 in Canada (Yep, the moment when the US couldn't export comics to Canada).
If anyone can read it... It will be amazing.

Not sure if it even came out last year, but my favourite read of 2018 was a french comic called Blast about this grotesquely obese guy who's arrested for murder and you learn the story through his confession to the police.
Sounds like a basic crime drama, but it's actually an amazing character piece.
    Other than that:
    -Black Hammer
    -Gideon Falls
    -God Hates Astronauts
    -Southern Bastards
    -Doom Patrol
    -Head Lopper

Not too far off the beaten path for me, as I don't tend to go too far off the norm, usually. That said, and in no order, here is what I would say were my top 10 for the year -
    Black Hammer
    Miracle Man
    Pestilence: A Story of Satan
    Venom
    Doomsday Clock
    Immortal Hulk
    Gideon Falls
    Papergirls
    The Wicked And The Divine
    Uber: Invasion
Domino just missed and I hope to have Detective Comics and Conan up here for next year!
