I've had really good luck soaking the files in vinegar then using the copper tubing... Fast and easy! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

ScoutCrafter I will try wetting the file with vinegar before scraping.
I clean with the scrapers or file card first because the vinegar or any liquid etching solution only cuts what it wets. The rust shields the metal so if rust patches are there the steel is etched less than areas that aren't as rusty. By the time the rusty patch is sharp the bare areas are nearly gone.
A clean file sharpens more evenly.

Interesting to see how well the copper works ..I have heard of the Idea but never seen it done ...Thanks for showing us !!!

not2fast4u2c I'm learning new things as we go. The copper and steel work exactly the same but the copper wears away faster. It seems to penetrate deeper into the gullets. It also wears to the tooth shape quicker.

I have heard that once you use a file or a drill on copper or brass it becomes essentially worthless for steel use. I've heard it more for drills though... However, I have several old rusty files, and I know I have copper pipe laying around, so I will have to try this. I've also got a vinegar bath I was thinking of putting the files into. But I'll wait until I get through this series before I start cleaning & sharpening my files & rasps (I'm about a week behind right now). Hopefully, I'll be able to clean them all up and be able to get some use out of them.
I still would like to try my hand at MAKING a file sometime, but that will probably be some time down the road...

What did you make the scraper out of on the old sharpening series? I thought it was a piece of aluminum but I've reset several times since then. And that copper is $4 a foot at Ace. I needed a 6-inch piece for bushings for the mower deck wheels and that was last week. They kept it hid too! All I can do is line the grooves up with a wire brush to clean it and then dunk it. My shoulder is just now getting back to normal-ish from the trying to crank the splitter episode 2 weeks ago. And I can't do a single thing with a radio on. My train of thought derails right quick and ends up in the swamp for a while. I'm better off to just sit and listen. One barely track mind, such as it is! And I still like the Angel Share!

Lewie McNeely I like the angles to I use a dremel type thing with a brass wire brush in it every now and then then re French chalk them keeps them nice and clean .

Good deal, Dave Pound! I can't do the scraping. I can do a little but if I try many repetitions, arthur goes totally haywire. I've got a small wheel in the HBM and just do it with it when it's necessary. I don't mind a clogged file much because the main thing I do is take the drags, or depth gauges down on the chain saw. I'd rather have one on the dull side for that so I don't overload the saw and me as well. Better a dab high than trying to cut too deep and start grabbing more than necessary. 3 inches of rain last night. Girls minus kids are gone to the herb festival. Baby bulldozer is starting to eat off the table and the table itself. A wild time I wager! Hope all is well in the shop/house and sweet talking your saw isn't a bad thing.

Lewie McNeely all fine I lost the battle as I new I would saws in the rack in the shop women aye can't live with em can't live without them Ha!Ha! . I'm the same anything not to hammer the shoulders I'm all for . The most of my filling was with aluminium and lead i.e. Lead filler on vehicles so if you don't chalk them they look like flat bar in seconds so got used to using them file card after and rechalk ready for the next time then probablyevery six months or so dremel them chalk keeps the sharp and clean

I talk to the mowers but out in the shed by myself. I brag on the impact but usually if it's in front of Cheryl it was on a project she wanted done or had a hand in. Women get tetchus about stuff like that, especially when she rolls over on the impact and it lights up under the covers. The chalk is a fine idea! Just like making biscuits or bread, the flower keeps the dough from sticking to everything, even yerself!10/4 on the lead. I've seen a rasp used on Bondo and a very course file-ish thing.

Lewie McNeely I start off with a course rasp or dreadnought file for lead or thick aluminium and finish with files but fibreglass or Bondo I used to use a surform then about 4 years ago ish I was shown a Japanese rasp unbelievable its like loads of hack saw blades welded together in a honeycomb section sort of thing one side is rough the other fine smooth cut never clogs or blocks cuts anything from bondo to metal if it does get a bit it the teeth just a quick tap and it's clean up until finishing work I hammered it it's still as sharp as the day I got it they aren't dear either would hesitate to get another even if I melted it or something wonderful tool

Another guy who beats his head against the wall. For Dirty worn files, get a plastic silverware tray, safety glasses and rubber gloves. Put files into the tray as is. Pour in acid from an old auto battery. In one to two hours they will be clean and sharp, no work. Rinse well with water and dry. I have done this with files so rusty and clogged you could hardly see the teeth ! Best done outside!

If it works it is the right thing to do.
Sounds like you are happy with the result. 😁😎

You know if you used the file card right it might work better. The way you are using you could use a wire brush like they use to clean a weld. the card is used sideways. If you look at the file card the bristles are bent so they will get in the groves. I'm old school just hate to see a tool used incorrectly

Interesting thought about the file card orientation.
After reading your comment I went in search of a definitive answer. I got as many ideas as there were commentors.

Could you also use a brass wire wheel?

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

steve walker Yes I do sometimes. They wear out quick.

WHAT WOULD A BRASS WHEEL DO ?

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mike Tarzwell Brass brushes or wheels are usually softer than the file. I have had success with using brass brushes but the bristles bend and wear out quickly.

I've been waiting for this one. yeah! Crocus Cloth - that's a new one. You mean all the dust i scatter around plants, i could be using it to make an abrasive cloth instead? hmm
Did hear of Copper, have yet to try - File puts little 'teeth' in Copper so it 'falls' right into the next area spaces. [what i read]. I think, even soft, it works harder on embedded rust than the card. I WILL try this - Thanks!
Don't think you're Suppose to push down hard on the Files. Let Them do Work. seems right. [what i read as well]
Could Wear EARPHONES Listen to Music while working - we would just not hear What you're Dancing to. =]
Everything of mine gets covered w\ rust. I fight it. Now I've seen WAX being used to coat tools. NOT 4 Files.
HEY! I got it - USE your Tools Before Rust appears, Continue to do so, so it won't. there's a lot of Fun.

Karen O The dust will also combine with aluminum dust and make thermite. Don't wire brush aluminum and iron on the same wheel or collect the dust in the same container.
Thw whole press hardwerbwas because a guy thought I was pressing harder on the sharpened file than the dull one.
Hard enough to stay in the shot without the break dancing. Whatever blocks O2 stops rust.

You better put a hard hat on when you start that stuff. Our haid won't take all that turning like on a turntable without some help.

Man I never thought I would be so annoyed by words like Copper Tubing but dam bro..I instantly thought about my 3 year old daughter that I swear realized how annoying repeating something can get and has been picking on me ever since.

Too bad it was the subject of the video.

Too bad?? And I will say, with this whole common sense going extinct stuff we're dealing with, I'm sure there are definitely people that need some help understanding the subject or the point or whatever..but you were on more of like some trying to program people or something.

Na..I hope you don't think my burnt ass is really being too serious..I mean there's definitely no denying you were going for a record..and I'd say you smashed it..but I'm just being regular ol' dumdum Kev. Sorry if I annoyed you or anything. Have a good one.

I watched it and counted. That was pretty funny. When I got to 20, I thought there can't be more. It kept going.
No worries I just wondered how on the next video I can avoid repeating the same thing.
      😁😎

@@OldSneelock Haha..I'm weak. I really cracked up when you said it was 32 times. But honestly man..the video was definitely perfectly fine. I'm not a TH-camr or anything but I really do feel like being able to accept and handle criticism is something that goes such an incredibly long way in so many different areas.
