Earl and Val may be the best movie duo ever. This movie is done so well (it could’ve easily been too dumb or terrible), and Bacon and Ward work great together.
This is one of those rare horror movies where almost everyone is actually intelligent and makes sensible decisions, or at least understandable decisions. Also a small detail. Bert gives Melvin a gun with no bullets in it. But when Melvin gives it back to him, Bert still checks to make sure the gun is safe and empty. Proper gun safety right there. Kevin Bacon says this is the film he enjoyed working on the most, because it was just real raw experience with some decent actors.
I'm glad you pointed that out, almost everyone being intelligent is rare, and it makes the movie just that much better. And also the detail about Bert checking the fun when he gets it back. It's small details like that that show the amount of work and attention that the script/filming was given.
@@VerowakReacts I had never caught that gun check thing until this viewing and I probably seen it a hundred times over the years. Top flight gun safety discipline.
Another traditional sci-fi/horror trope that Tremors overturns is Val & Earl being the main characters. Any other film, two guys working in the middle of nowhere usually get killed in the first five minutes.
I totally agree that most characters made sensible decisions. Even when panicked, their snap decisions (whether they worked or not) felt justifiable...except one. After Nester's trailer gets toppled, he crawled his way into a tractor tire, and kicked back like he was modeling an inflatable for an above ground pool. His ass was like 3 inches off the ground. His sigh of relief is what gets me. You think that you're safe there. Nah, you'll just be eaten ass first. The actor sold it so well. I love it in that regard.
Fun fact: Kevin Bacon missing so much with the hammer in the beginning was an ad lib. The look Fred Ward gives him is a genuine WTF are you doing look.
Like the fade-in of the pogo stick after 26:45. Also, things like the excellent quick-cut after they find the buried car and the setups, like the refrigerator acting up. This movie may not be high class, but it's solid movie-making craftsmanship. If you want to make movies, you should be taking notes.
Yes, the little girl (Ariana Richards) also played in Jurassic Park. Poor girl was almost eaten by worms and dinosaurs. No wonder she quit acting after childhood.
Burt had great gun discipline. He knew the gun was empty when he gave it to him and when he got it back, he opened the cylinder, checked it, and then put it in his waistband. Kudos to whomever had him do that...or to himself for knowing it.
That's the difference between a B movie and trashy movie. This maybe be a B movie, but they cared enough to get the small things right. And it makes all the difference.
Once Kevin Bacon started filming TREMORs he had a blast really liking his cast mates and the vibe on the production. Then when the movie under preformed at the box office he was worried that he'd get blamed for it as he and Fred Ward shouldered much of the film. That never happened and Tremors went on to be a sleeper success and a continued crowed pleaser in the following decades. Which pleased him. He'd thought about reprising his character in Tremors II however he went on to other movies and later felt Val and Rhonda also moved on and were happy.
He also filmed a pilot for a show 3-4 years ago where he would return to the character but it didn't get picked up.He said he's still interested in returning though.
This was the very first giant monster movie I saw on TV when i was 5 years old! Its one of my favorites from my childhood! The idea for the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson both of them were in the Navy, they were taking notes on a large boulder in a Nevada Test Site and one of them, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let me off this rock?" And thus TREMORS was born.
I first viewed this flick on VHS back in 1996. For such a low budget film, I thought its production and subsequent appeal was very well done. I am pleased to see that it still has entertainment value to this day! Thank you Verowak!
Until recently, I didn't even know the movie's original title being "Tremors". For decades I knew it only by its German title "Im Land der Raketenwürmer", which translates to "In the Land of the Rocket Worms". 😁
Man I love this movie so much. Everything in it just works. Great characters, awesome monsters, funny script, memorable dialogue, you name it. The friendship between Val and Earl feels so authentic, Rhonda is delightful, and Burt and Heather are too much fun for words. I've watched it at least a dozen times, and I have fun every single time.
This is one of those movies that when it pops up I'll watch every time. You asked about test audiences. I've been to five test movies all back in the 80s. The result of answering a mall survey. They all worked the same way. I'd get a postcard in the mail with a date and time (always a Tuesday evening as I recall) and the name of a theater in my town. No movie name. You show up (good for 2 people), present the card and watch the movie. As you exit you're given a clipboard with some printed questions and rate aspects of the movie. Plot, certain characters, quality, etc. Give it stars, make any additional thoughts and turn it in. Three of the five I don't think ever came out. Of the two that did, one was Chainsaw Massacre 2, the other was Big Trouble in Little China with Kurt Russell.
Thanks for this info! I've only ever heard of test screenings, so it's just fascinating to me. Did the two movies that came out after you rated the aspects of the movies have big changes (from what you can remember)?
I never saw the chainsaw movie again but there were a few changes in Big Trouble as I remember. The theater version did some more verbal exposition early on so the story easier to understand. I think Russell had some funnier dialogue in the theater version. I liked that version better. It was a good way to see free movies.
I like how true he was to the character. When Melvin gives the gun back to him, he checks the chambers before he stuffs it in his belt even though he knows it's empty. A true gunsmith always treats a gun as if it's loaded.
Like "stampede", "you have to have a plan", and the noisy refrigerator. They all seem like throwaway comments at first, but then they come back and work again.
This one -- and the first sequel -- are so much fun. Not all that scary, but funny with lots of relatable characters. Makes me happy to see you reacting to this one.
@@StoriesThatSuck-pw1vi Guess I should check out II. i know for fact I watched the sequel once and while I don't recall what I saw, I made a definite point of never watching it again.
@@VerowakReacts :) Back then sound systems weren't quite as advanced in theaters! But my dad took me to see it as a kid and we had a blast nonetheless!
Yes, he was in one of those dancing movies. In fact, that dancing movie, Footloose, was the one that got him noticed, and that's when his acting career really took off.
Footloose and Dirty Dancing are the two big dancing movies that I've heard of but don't know anything about except Kevin Bacon is in one and Patrick Swayze is in the other lol
@@VerowakReacts Saturday Night Fever (1977), Flashdance (1983), A Chorus Line (1985), White Nights (1985), and Singin' in the Rain (1952) are other dance movies that are not quite as popular.
This movie is the definition of a cult classic. Completely unrecognized upon released and universally beloved ever since being released on home media in the late 90’s.
This is my second favorite movie ever. I saw it for the first time when I was like 11 and it’s really what started me down my sci-fi movie journey and my love for the genre in general. There’s so many great things about this movie, the chemistry between all the characters is fantastic, there’s just the right amount of scary and funny, it doesn’t feel like a single moment of the movie is wasted when it comes to the exposition and the set up, everything you see or hear comes back around at some point. Also its great when a sci-fi movie has characters are competent and capable, despite being in a situation that they’ve never had to be in before.
Thanks, Verowak! 🪱 This was directed by Roy Underwood. I think you'd appreciate these two from him, as well... CITY SLICKERS (1991) and HEART AND SOULS (1993).
This movie is a classic lol 12:04 Ariana Richards, this was her first movie 41:49 best line "what kind of fuse is that? "Cannon fuse" "what the hell do you use it for?" "My cannon" lol
Great movie, with regards to earthquakes: I was living in San Jose, CA when the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake happened, it was a 6.9 on the Richter scale and partially collapsed the Bay Bridge. There's a whole Wikipedia page about it. Something you'll never forget is seeing the walls and doors of your house change shape into rhomboids as they shake. My mom was sitting by the swimming pool praying to God for a sign that everything was going to be all right just before it started when she saw the water go away from her then coming roaring back drenching her. I was sitting down in front of the TV with some hot dogs getting ready for the World Series to start. After the shaking relented I went outside and stood around eating my hot dogs while my parents checked the house out.
Great B-movie fun this one with decent practical effects and fantastic chemistry between the leads. One of those movies that knows exactly what it is and just leans in :). And Kevin Bacon came around pretty quickly once he started working on "Tremors" BTW and has said in interviews that though he took it on begrudgingly it turned out to be one of the most fun times he's had making a movie (probably doesn't hurt that people have a real affection for the film too).
In college in the mid 80's i dated a girl from that area, a high desert area of California called the Alabama Hills. Most of them had an accent my friends and and i called the 'desert hick' accent. They were all really good skiers and every male i met teenage and up chewed tobacco, every single one.
I attended FLEASWTRACENPAC in San Diego and there were a couple of earthquakes while I was there, nothing serious but the barracks was built on landfill so it swayed dramatically. There was also a small tremor in north Georgia back in the early 00s which was interesting.
Yes, my ex-wife and I were part of a test audience for "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins in 1997. How it worked (in the UK at least) was that we went to a local multicinema, there was a private screening for a small cinema full of people, and after the film we had to fill in a questionaire, adding some of our own comments / thoughts. I have no idea how she got hold of the tickets or why we were chosen, but she did work for Microsoft at the time. I enjoyed the movie as it was, but when I saw it again after release, there had been some small changes. To be honest it was a while after when I saw it again, so I couldn't now tell you what the changes were, but they were not massive. As far as I remember we saw the movie for free
So nice to see your channel continuing to grow. I think it has to do with your balanced approach in selecting movies and TV series. So many of the other people in this business have switched from predominantly movies to predominantly TV series. Your success also has to do with your analytical mind and charming personality. You truly are a beautiful lady. I think I've watched TREMORS at least a dozen times.
I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area and minor to moderate earthquakes are common, but the Loma Prieta quake in '89 was devastating. I lived in Santa Rosa then and I saw the small field behind my mother's house actually roll from the southeast to the northwest like wakes on a lake after a boat goes by. I'll never forget that day.
I'm glad you discovered this one. This isn't just a good movie... this is a true gem. I honestly can't imagine anyone not loving this movie. The writing is soooo good. Simple idea, but thought through so well and executed perfectly. Sure, it's a "B-movie," but it really is a top-tier B-movie. Classic. I mentioned "Deja Vu" with Denzel Washington in the comments of a previous reaction of yours. I do hope that one gets added to your queue. Another gem that is totally underrated. Another one that falls into a similar category as "Deja Vu" is "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. Best to not know in advance what either one is about. The common denominator is that both tell outrageously fantastical stories ("that could never happen!"), yet they're examples of why movies are so awesome. They take ridiculous, preposterous concepts and pull you in. Who cares if they stretch the bounds of suspending disbelief? They're crafted beautifully and fulfill the goal of providing immense entertainment. I'm confident that you will love both of them. "Deja Vu" and "Frequency." Write those titles down!!! 🤓🤩😃
Fun one, Verowak! This one always makes me laugh! Yes, you have a lot of Kevin Bacon movies to catch up on so you can play Six Degrees To Kevin Bacon like a boss. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Great Reaction Verowak! Funny that you asked if we were ever in earthquake! About a week ago I live in West Texas and about 9:30am I was still in bed and it started shaking at first I thought it was an 18 wheeler but I didn’t hear any engines then I realized it was a Tremor! It lasted about 15 to 20 seconds! That was my first experience! Probably a 2 on the Richter Scale! As for Kevin Bacon the first movie I remember him in was Animal House (Thank You Sir May I Have Another)! And he’s in the first Friday the 13th. As for Tremors I definitely enjoyed it at the Theater when it came out and went to watch it again about three or four times! 🎸🤘🙏🏻
Fred Ward who plays Earl, also played the dad of Felony Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) in Sweet Home Alabama. And he was one of the main characters in Escape From Alcatraz, with Clint Eastwood. And he also was in Corky Romano!
great film! this is how the worms in dune should have been done!! ...what makes this film so wonderful is that its like an imaginary game we might have played as kids, but with real monsters
I have seen this movie so much I know every line lol. Love this movie. Scared me as a kid tho. The banter between val and earl is the amazing and hilarious. Perfect timing and script.
Your reaction was magical! So much fun, funny, scary/gory, and a ton of fun to rewatch. Every character has a little bit of texture to make them special. The movie feels like a neat throwback to the old creature feature movies just like The Blob remake. The two-stage reveal of the graboids is a nifty bit of genius to keep things fresh. This has a fun sequel universe. They're all much lower budget and generally have one or two characters returning but they're oddly wholesome and earnest in trying to entertain and celebrate the little universe they made. On test audiences: I was in the test audience for the Charlie Sheen film Terminal Velocity. It has temporary music (Pearl Jam in parts which they clearly couldn't get the rights to for the final film) and had more scenes for one bad guy. At the end you'd get a little questionnaire and could answer some specific stuff and then add your freeform feedback. I recall writing that one of the bad guys was confusing and not very good and he got edited down to oblivion in the final film. I feel bad for the actor but he didn't help the movie as filmed. : ( If I could be in a test audience again I would in a heartbeat!
You're doing your part! In terms of test audience. If the character doesn't help the story, it makes sense to remove them. Thankfully the actor got paid for his work, though not having the screen time does suck.
Tremors developed a life of its own after this film. Countless sequels, a prequel, a TV series. Some very good, some not, but all are fun to watch. Fred Ward shines in this one. RIP. The annoying kid with the basketball grew into an annoying man in the franchise. Val: “for all we know, they could fly!”……………..😳 “Can you fly, Sucker?!”……………….😳😳😳
Tremors makes my top 10 list easy for favorite movies, its just so good and extremely rewatchable, ive maybe watched it a dozen or so times this year alone. Its just that fun and entertaining.
When I was a kid my dad used to take me to the town he grew up in,it was in Tennessee but I can’t remember the name of the town.they had a population of around 30.there were old guys In overalls sitting on their porch,a dog that slept in the road, and my great aunt murt actually had an outhouse, the whole town was built around this small crater and you could see old cars and trucks at the bottom that fell in there
I experienced a 4.0 earthquake in High School. I thought it felt like that big caterpillar tracked vehicle they drove the Space Shuttle out to the launch pad with drove by at 50 miles per hour.
1:10 Usually when there is a major earthquake in Chile, it gets refleted as a very mild one here in São Paulo. So mild that I never felt a thing. Some people do, and apparently the tallest buildings get some shaky ceiling lamps, but I guess I am normally off balance, because I find it impossible to notice.
This movie was always on TV when I was a kid. Always. And I watched it all the time. It was actually pretty freaky at the time when you're a kid, but boy oh boy is this movie charming as hell. And fun! I've seen this so many times and love it. Action, horror, comedy. I love this freaking movie. The next one is pretty decent too. There are more, but they aren't that...good...but they're entertaining enough if you shut your brain off for.
I also kinda like Kevin Bacon in Hollow Man which is another horror movie he was in. It was one of the weaker movies directed by Paul Verhoeven but still kinda fun, with some great special effects.
"Footloose" The original 80s film is great. Other films with him I'd recommend off the top of my head, Apollo 13, Flatliners, TAKING CHANCE (beautiful film), Mystic River, Murder in the First (probably one of his most acclaimed roles). There are a lot more film, those are just his best I remember more.
I took Amtrak to CA from WI years ago. There's all kinds of little "towns" and little trailers in the middle of nowhere out west with people living off grid.
Val: "Can you fly sucker?!" Falling Graboid: "Not yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet..." splat. I hope you'll react to the other 6 movies too, or at least 2 and 3 as the first 3 movies are the best.
Footloose would be a good watch... he had a very small role in Animal House too. It's a great fun horror monster movie that takes place in daylight! Crazy!
This was country musician Reba McEntire's first acting role. 11 years later she started her own sitcom called Reba that lasted six seasons. I have been in a test audience (for an early cut of Sophia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides"). Tickets were handed out at my high school, so it really is just about being in the right place at the right time. Several scenes were unfinished (low-quality and grainy, like what I expect dailies to look like). Coppola was there and introduced the film as well as what they expected of us as the audience (we had a small form to fill out). To be honest, I still haven't seen the movie in its final form.
The movie's final form 🤣. I'm guessing if you saw it now, it would be hard to notice if things changed. Though it's pretty amazing that Sophia Coppola was there!
Low light pollution is awesome. I grew up in a COUNTY with a population of about 1000 people - about one person per square mile density. And the low part of the county is almost a mile high. At night, it feels like you could reach up and run your fingers through the clouds. The path of the milky way seems so bright. Add to that the utter quiet. For those used to living in the city, or even the big suburbs, that can make it hard for them to fall asleep at night there. They realize just how much background noise they've become accustomed to, and the intense quiet can be distracting if you're not used to it. I look forward to moving back there one day.
I used to live in California and I lived through the 1971 earthquake that killed 64 people and cost over 3.5 billion dollars adjusted for inflation. My mother worked in a hospital and half that building just collapsed into rubble. The reason that didn't result in hundreds of deaths was that it was the old wing and they had built a new wing and transferred everybody out of it earlier that year so the old wing was just a storage facility with a few research labs, and the quake happened around 6 am before anybody got to work that day. I lived through many others but nothing as big or terrifying as that one.
I think that the continued mentioning of the Graboids' smell was originally meant to pay off in the script - like detecting their presence by the smell - but it was cut from the narrative, possibly after filming began.
Kevin bacon has done some great movies . Footloose the dancing one , flatliners and stir if echos supernatural , the river wild hollow man . Great reaction as always
The little girl on the pogo stick is the same actress who played lexi in jurassic park years later. And of course, reba mcintyre was a big country singer when she did this film. Lot of familiar faces (family ties, adventures of remo williams, big trouble in little china).
What should have been a 50s B monster flick was transformed into an A list movie. It is just so wholesome! The adults make intelligent plans, only to be thwarted time after time. A super tight script, great dialog, and yes, even the quishy sound design carries this fun little gem. Really good reaction, catching how kindhearted this monster flick really is. Very easy to look at.
After this are five sequels, a prequel and a short lived series. Kevin Bacon preceded this with Animal House, Friday the 13th and Footloose. He's also been in Wild Things, Hollow Man, A Few Good Men, X-Men: First Class and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The actor playing Walter Chang was previously in Big Trouble in Little China, while the actress playing Mindy was also in Jurassic Park and briefly in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Burt's wife is played by Country music legend Reba McEntire
Bacon has also been in She's Having a Baby, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and enough other things to inspire the 6 degrees game. Michael Gross was famously the dad in Family Ties. He was also in an episode of Night Court.
@@sumelar the fourth film takes place roughly 100 years before the first film, thus making it a prequel. It's called Tremors 4: The Beginning. Aftershocks, Back To Perfection, Tremors: The Series, Bloodlines, A Cold Day in Hell and Shrieker Island are sequels
Other noteable movies with Kevin Bacon include: Animal House. Friday The 13th (the 1980 original). Footloose (the 1980s original). Stir Of Echoes (1999)(I think this film is a masterpiece.).
I grew up in the Bay Area, California where earthquakes were common. It wasn't unusual at all just to feel the ground shake for a second or two every now and then. The worst earthquake I experienced was the quake of '89. That one lasted more than just a few seconds, to the point where I was like, what the hell's going on? Dozens of people died and thousands of others were injured. It's still the biggest one we've had since the great quake of 1906.
Finland isn't really an earthquake country, we've had a few but it's usually nothing to write home about. I've never even experienced one myself, they are mainly only noticeable by seismographs.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!! I'm glad that despite it not doing well at the box office, people still watched it on VHS and it grew in popularity so much!!
Up until the scene where we actually see the monster, all we would normally see was a hump moving along the dirt. This was accomplished by digging a trench, placing a boat in, upside-down, and covering it with dirt. Out of camera range, there would be a vehicle dragging the boat along.
A solid script, a solid cast and the movie holds up! I couldn't ask for more 🤩

In camera gun safety here better than the actual measures on the Rust set.
Fun fact: Kevin Bacon missing so much with the hammer in the beginning was an ad lib. The look Fred Ward gives him is a genuine WTF are you doing look.
This Jaws-on-land B movie plot has no business being this charming and clever. One piece of note is the excellent use of sound design
Like the fade-in of the pogo stick after 26:45.
Also, things like the excellent quick-cut after they find the buried car and the setups, like the refrigerator acting up. This movie may not be high class, but it's solid movie-making craftsmanship. If you want to make movies, you should be taking notes.

Fred Ward. There's just something about that man. RIP

Burt had great gun discipline. He knew the gun was empty when he gave it to him and when he got it back, he opened the cylinder, checked it, and then put it in his waistband. Kudos to whomever had him do that...or to himself for knowing it.
I completely missed that, but knowing that now... I love it! It's details like that that make the movie just that much more appreciative.
And then the final Tremors came out, featuring their daughter, and it turns out they got divorced. XD
So I guess "happy" is relative.
@@mattstanford9673 It's all relative. I recall him giving his take on their characters around the time they were talking about the tv series.
Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell was the 6th out of 7 films, which featured the grown up daughter known as Valerie.
He also filmed a pilot for a show 3-4 years ago where he would return to the character but it didn't get picked up.He said he's still interested in returning though.
This was the very first giant monster movie I saw on TV when i was 5 years old! Its one of my favorites from my childhood!
The idea for the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson both of them were in the Navy, they were taking notes on a large boulder in a Nevada Test Site and one of them, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let me off this rock?"
And thus TREMORS was born.
This is one of my favorite nostalgic movies cause I remember so clearly watching it when I was real young
I first viewed this flick on VHS back in 1996. For such a low budget film, I thought its production and subsequent appeal was very well done. I am pleased to see that it still has entertainment value to this day! Thank you Verowak!
My pleasure, it is definitely very entertaining after all these years!
This movie does a great job at making the audience hyper aware of vibrations and sounds.
Until recently, I didn't even know the movie's original title being "Tremors".
For decades I knew it only by its German title "Im Land der Raketenwürmer", which translates to "In the Land of the Rocket Worms". 😁

Genuinely funny, genuinely terryfing. A very rare combination to accomplish.
41:00.......Bert Gummer is my hero!!! Great performance, Michael Gross!!! 👏👏👏👏
He plays such a different character in this movie than he did as Steven on Family Ties. Definitely a talented actor.
I like how true he was to the character. When Melvin gives the gun back to him, he checks the chambers before he stuffs it in his belt even though he knows it's empty. A true gunsmith always treats a gun as if it's loaded.
This silly little low budget scifi horror movie is really a masterclass in storytelling. Everything mentioned early pays off in the end.
A solid script really makes a movie stand out. It's so wonderfully acted too
Like "stampede", "you have to have a plan", and the noisy refrigerator. They all seem like throwaway comments at first, but then they come back and work again.

Absolutely one of my favorite movies.
You summed it up so well! The chemistry, competence and just everything about the characters is great to see. So well done 🥰
Thanks, Verowak! 🪱 This was directed by Roy Underwood. I think you'd appreciate these two from him, as well... CITY SLICKERS (1991) and HEART AND SOULS (1993).

That is terrifying!! Hopefully just a once in a lifetime experience
This really is a perfect script. No lines wasted
Kevin Bacon, in "Wild Things", "Stir of Echoes" or "Hollow Man"! Great actor. Love your reactions. 😁♥️🇬🇧
Thank you! "Hollow Man" is one Kevin Bacon movie that I want to watch. I haven't heard of the others before lol
Thank you for that! Seeing a movie for free is always a bonus 😁 I need to look into how some movies changed based on test audience reactions/reviews
I do like that, despite a couple of them being jerks, when the chips are down they all have each other's backs.
That sounds absolutely terrifying! I have heard that some places, the ground opens up... which I would like to avoid at all costs

It lasted about 15 to 20 seconds!

If I could be in a test audience again I would in a heartbeat!
RIP.

Up until the scene where we actually see the monster, all we would normally see was a hump moving along the dirt. This was accomplished by digging a trench, placing a boat in, upside-down, and covering it with dirt. Out of camera range, there would be a vehicle dragging the boat along.
The second one, Tremors 2 Aftershocks is also really good
