This journey has been the most interesting channel I've been watching for a long, long time. Thank you for cheering this with us and a BIG gratulation to all of you who have been involved in this refit. It has been a pleasure to see every video produced. Thank you. John, Norway
I have enjoyed watching all the videos in this series. In the 1960's my father was a locktender at the South Mills (NC) locks at the south end of the Dismal Swamp Canal, so we would see Slade Dale and the Queen come thru several times a year. We always knew when she was coming by her distinctive whistle which could be heard at my grandparents' home three miles away. When Captain Dale and the Queen were headed north at the end of the season in 1963 he did not have any passengers on board. He took my parents, my three sisters, and myself on board and we went with him thru the Dismal Swamp Canal and the Elizabeth River where we got off at Norfolk. So, I guess I can say that one of the highlights of my life was standing at the wheel of the Queen and guiding her thru the DSC and into the Elizabeth River under the watchful eyes of Captain Dale.
That is so awesome! So wonderfully written...seems like the memory is still close by! I've tried these past few years to find someone to talk about Slade Dale on camera...but most have passed on...
@@peterslackfilms I wish I could remember more. I was 16 at the time and my baby sister had just turned nine a few days before our trip thru the canal. My sisters remember details I never noticed. The main things I remember were the differences in the elevation of the land along the canal, differences I never noticed while riding in a car along US 17 less than 100 feet parallel to the canal, and the way the Queen responded when the wheel was turned while in the river vs in the canal. Thanks for producing this.
@@edwardpearce1138 Well you describe it very well! This 2.5hr version has cut a lot of details in the series out, so if you ever have time...you should go back and watch! Each episode is only around 10min! Thank you again for reaching out!
There is a photo 37 minutes into this video with Coastal Queen passing through a train bridge. Do you know the location of the photo? It looks exactly like the train bridge and surrounding area where I live.
Enjoyed all the episodes. Great documentation of a fantastic boat and restoration.
