    I love this episode because there are two parallel leadership stories involving relatively minor characters. Nguyen and Souther on the Agatha King and Kirino and her second on the Hammurabi. Kirino's second is as close to mutiny as Souther is at points. But she keeps him on side by being transparent enough when required. Plus, her actions are sensible and smart unlike Nguyen's. But communication is part of that.
    Plus Kirino is just so focused on her task - fighting for Mars. Her decent/cold decision to "let them" was the right call. And by this point you'll know how Nguyen's impulsive anger driven launch of the hybrids worked out for him.

    • @FiddyPlus
      @FiddyPlus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You are spot on in the similarities between the leadership on both ships. I think the difference between Souther and the #2 on the Hammurabi is that in Souther’s case, his commanding officer is clearly acting outside the chain of command, whereas in the case of the Hammurabi, Kirino’s actions, while he may disagree with them, can’t be said to be in conflict with the best interests of their planet. So, like a good 2nd in command, he advises his commander, but with the understanding that the final decision is always hers to make

      @@charly03090309 you’re right, he is. But he was smart enough not to attempt a mutiny on his ship. He may not have agreed with his captain’s approach to that situation, but she gets to make the call. Maybe he’ll get his own command one day and he can do it his way.

      It's clear that Mao is a big picture guy and that he let's nothing stand in the way of that. You could see it when he received news of Julie's apparent demise (there is a moment of sadness and anger that is quickly suppressed). And here he also chooses the, what he thinks is, the greater good: getting the understanding of this alien threat above anything else. It makes his decisions understandable, no matter how wrong they are. I love this about the show, it doesn't just paint these characters as black and white figures, there is always a reason behind their behavior that you can understand, even when you can't agree with it. This is something that the books don't do because they are written as POV chapters from our major characters, so only their motivations are clear.

    • @KineticSymphony
      @KineticSymphony ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@YouHaventSeenMeRight Yeah Mao isn't a cartoon villain in that he wants to torture people just for sadistic pleasure. He thinks the pain inflicted is a necessary evil in order to obtain knowledge to potentially save all of humanity against an alien threat.
      He's completely mad and wrong, but it's not without reasoning.

    I think Alex is confused. Spending hours and hours alone with his thoughts has him on the fence concerning his family. Remember in season 2 he says to Amos, Drunk at the club on Tycho, when he's in space all he can think about is being at home. When he's at home in bed," All I can dream about" is being back in space. That scene is one of Alex's strongest early performances.

    • @funnylilgalreacts
      @funnylilgalreacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think Alex sending that message means he’s no longer confused. As much as he loves his son and wife, he loves space more. Now that he’s the pilot of a Mars warship, there’s no way he ever gives that up to live a normal life.

I'm sure he hates every single actions they had to do, but he sees progress & potential and ultimately he thinks all those bad things he did will be redeem with them "controlling" the protomolecule. I love that we have had an in depth look at 3 Martian captains now. The captain of the Donny, the captain of whatever tub Bobby was riding in, and now the Captain of the Hammurabi. In all three cases, these were intelligent and insightful officers looking to limit and control conflict when able. They were not gung-ho and bloodthirsty, though some under their command were. This show in general has done a really good job with a lot of the military leadership acknowledging the responsibility of their commands. As a vet, I really appreciate it.
    And I am looking forward to hearing the response to everyone’s favorite line next episode.

      One thing that they have definitely been able to show is that Mars is military leadership is calm, cool and collected. I love the way they portray the captains on the show Bobbie couldn’t wait to go fight on earth, so it made me think all of Mars wants war. But the people in charge have the right mindset.
      😉 the next episode doesn’t disappoint

    • @AngeloBarovierSD
      @AngeloBarovierSD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The writing is certainly the source of that but it also helps that the right actors were cast.
      For instance, Hugh Dillon played Lt. Sutton (Bobbie's CO), had just come off of playing the commander of WWII's Camp X in X COMPANY. And had previously spent 5 seasons as ETF (SWAT) Sniper and tactical leader Ed Lane in FLASHPOINT. So, there was a certain bearing which didn't need to be trained into him.
      Too often, we see well-written characters played by ill-prepared actors, but casting and production consistently turned out great side characters played well by perfectly cast actors.
      Side note: It's finally safe to say my all-time favourite character in the show was and ever will be Cotyar Ghazi. As a real-world and fictional espionage junkie, Nick Tarabay played Cotyar (the fmr. Military spook turned corporate spy turned state operative) to perfection.

    Can we stop and appreciate the genius of this being called the Triple Point? In science, the triple point is the conditions (temperature and pressure) at which a substance can exist in all three of it's phases, gas, liquid and solid. It is a single point at which all can come together despite being completely different in form, but made of the same base material. I feel these are the three sides/groups of people that are on different teams, but the same at heart.

    When it comes to landing spaceships on planets/moons/whatever, it's most efficient to "brake" at the very last moment necessary. If you slow down before you absolutely need to, you just waste fuel because the gravity just accelerates you back up again and you need to brake again and again as you get closer. Presumably the Roci's computer has done the calculations and brought the Roci to a safe landing with a minimum of thrust expended.

    How is the reading of Leviathan Wakes going - have you started it yet?
    i always assumed that all the pods have hybrids in them - which is terrifying when you consider how many kids they have used. The Dr's comments to Mao was more along the lines of he wanted to continue the work, so was going to "hide" some candidates from Mao and continue the research in secret

      If it makes you feel any better, this was my first season working on the show and I quickly grew to love the crew and production. As a cinephile and sci-fi nerd, I presumed it was the closest I would ever come to my childhood dream: working on a Star Wars movie.
      I loved it so much I went back and pushed through those first four episodes. People, top to bottom, who cared so much for this project, had to have made something special, I figured, even though I didn't much care for the first and only episode I had watched way back when. I did not regret giving it a second go. By the end of season 3, I became a fan (and began to avoid being within earshot of set, to avoid spoilers!).
      So, when the news came, the production and the show which I had only recently come to love was just as rapidly ending.
      I was devastated. We weren't going back. And there's a story about Thomas Jane I'm holding back but believe me when I say it was gut-wrenching to think it might all be over. Little shows like this don't get saved. It just doesn't happen that way.
      So, when it did. Oh, boy!
      My emotional journey with THE EXPANSE was not as long as yours but it was just as intense. And when we came back to make Season 4, you might as well have renamed it THE EUPHORIA.
      We slogged through ice storms, cold rain, and windy days after that but that experience, IMO, galvanized the crew. The care and diligence that went into seasons 4-6 was unlike anything I've ever seen in the union world.
      I've said it before and I'll say it again: THE EXPANSE was the most indiefilm production I've ever been part of, in all the best ways.
      Anyway, more on that another time.
      Yam seng!

    While it would certainly be bad and looks terrible. The reality is it would be a very quick. You can last in the vacuum of space for maybe between 15-60 seconds. All the air will be pulled out of you and you'll quickly pass out and be gone. Not suggesting it's good. Just not as awful as the way that I think would be the worse......burning. That'd be real bad.
