One game I think a lot about is the cancelled video game of The Dark Knight. It probably would be fine/mediocre like the Batman Begins game, and it's cancellation was one of the things that paved the way for the arkham games, but I can't help but wonder how a video game of one of the biggest films of the early 21st century would be like.

XYZ was a game in the works by Steven Spielberg alongside ABC (which ended up being released as Boom Blox). It was supposed to focus around characters with supernatural abilities that were being chased by a CIA like entity. Of course it was so interesting that it had to be cancelled.

Damn, I wish my memory was better when these videos come out. Can never think of a suggestion. You already covered Eight Days ages ago, which is kind of my favourite example of an unreleased game that lives in my head rent-free.
But DUDE, thanks for the reminder of proto-Splinter Cell Conviction. I remember actually really loving the concept when the initial footage came out, including Hobo Sam. It seemed like Ubisoft actually taking a step towards a modern Assassin's Creed-y type of game (pre-Watch Dogs, of course.) Just like you, still enjoyed the Conviction we got, but the ideas were really interesting!

When it comes to adapting IPs, I sometimes feel like people should just make spiritual successors or inspired-by type of games instead. For example, I'd love to play a survival action-horror game set in the Vietnam War where you take on soldiers and mysteries and even moral/ethical decisions. And I don't mean just a walking sim or a zombie game either. Something along the lines of The Evil Within's psychological horror spliced with Manhunt's tone/atmosphere and the Vietnam War setting. So many themes, settings, etc. that's actually rarely touched on in the landscape of gaming. Or maybe I'm just spitballing. i dunno.

Keeping it with Ubisoft games that got changed mid-development: the original Rayman Raving Rabbids. Back before it was a party game, it was supposed to be an action adventure platformer type of deal. I remember being so bummed out when I was 12 years old when I played the party game. All I saw up until then was a trailer that showed platforming gameplay with some party games, but not a full fledged party game. This has nothing to do with cancelled games, but I’ve always wanted a detective game set in one location, like the Clue movies, or Death on the Nile. You would have to actually search for clues and deduce who the killer was. But it’s really hard to make a good detective story that doesn’t hold your hand too much and do all the hard work for you, but at the same time isn’t too hard where players would get frustrated and quite. Im not a dev, I’m sure it’s a really hard balance to get right, which is probably why we haven’t seen any. I hoped Death Loop was it, but it did all the deduction for you.

Urban Decay was being developed by Andrew Spencer Studios and set to be published by Psygnosis. Its release date was originally planned around the summer of 1995. It was meant to use the same characteristic ellipsoid 3D graphics as its spiritual predecessor Ecstatica. The urban setting seemed so gritty and dreamlike it gave a certain ambience to it, I wish we did get the final product. Look it up

For the longest time, I held out hope for Eight Days on PS3. The trailer was amazing for the time, and the game never came out. It still lives rent-free in my head.
As far as an Apocalypse Now game, we did get Spec Ops The Line. Its a great, often forgotten game.

I was really mid on OG Conviction back in the day but thinking back on open levels with lots of options for infiltration and unorthodox stealth would actually be on brand and a fresh take for the series...man I miss classic Splinter Cell 😑

Blacklist isn't that old, and was fantastic with classic gameplay and updated elements from Conviction (which itself was fantastic, though different to the others, honestly there has never been a bad Splinter Cell)

@@cenciende9401 Blacklist, if viewed as a mainline Splinter Cell, is VERY bad. They should've made it all about Briggs (+ not having Ironside as FIscher would not have been a problem) and make it a spinoff.

I remember an article in game informer that indicated that assassins creed 1 was the prototype for splinter cell conviction, but they decided just to extrapolate it into a full game and not make conviction that game. This was before either game released. But they described the prototype and it sas asdassin's creed.

Yo Jake, I've got two cancelled titles for you, boyh with the connection to the movie world, the first one is "City of the Dead", a game set within George A. Romeros zombie Franchise, the second one is "Hannibal", based on the 2001 Movie adaptation of a Richard Harris Hannibal Lecter book, the second one got a trailer that I saw many years ago and was eagerly awaiting to no awail. Can't wait for the next episode of tour cancelled games series! 😊

One thing I wondered about the early Conviction build is if they were going to explore the whole "Megiddo" thing which is also brought up in the final game at different points. Basically, some kind of secret society was hinted at which could have been interesting.

I heard Rising was supposed to show how he saved Olga's child from the Patriots, with a blend of stealth and sword stuff (perhaps alternating between firearms and the sword? that's a cool concept), also it'd be a dream to see Raiden right after the crazy events of MGS2

I remember the Apocalypse Now game kickstarter and it failing miserably. Was in a discussion on IGN years ago most of us just simply couldn't understand how it could ever be? a Narrative driven War film with very little action becoming a Video game? How do you make it work?
also how would the licensing work, seems like an expensive hurdle to acquire the rights to use the name 'Apocalypse Now' etc

I think whatever conviction was, was completely repurposed and remade for watch dogs

Some of the original idea for Splinter Cell Conviction made it into the final game, but the game itself was more focused on action than stealth in the end. i personally thought Blacklist was better as it offered more choice, but i digress. a couple of canceled games i would have loved to see are the original Prey sequel, a Kojima take on Silent Hill in Silent Hills, what Soul Reaver 2 could have been on Dreamcast, what a complete version of The Phantom Pain may have looked like, the list goes on...

    - The original version of D2, the sequel to D (PS1), that was meant for the Panasonic M2 (cancelled successor of the 3DO), with a trailer existing online that’s incredibly ominous and dripping in atmosphere! The D2 that was eventually released on the Sega Dreamcast is such a mess and worth checking out for how bonkers it is…but it’s nothing compared to the concept that they were going for in the original
    - the various cancelled games that WB Montreal were working on after finishing Batman: Arkham Origins. They had a Robin (Damian Wayne) game, a Superman game, and even a 🅱️uicide Squad game in the works…which was why they inevitably hit a lot of bad luck and were forced to continuously cancel their projects and restart until they ended up plopping out Gotham Knights 😒
    - Eidos Montreal’s pitch for a mainline Final Fantasy game that was to be worked on by the same team that made Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It was WILD…by 2011 standards, but we’ve seen quite a bit of stuff like it now that the technology can keep up.
    - Speaking of FF… the Final Fantasy game that Grin (Bionic Commando, Wanted tie-in game, other stuff; went on to do Payday 1-3 under a new name after going under) was going to make. It had some GoW 2018 vibes to it a good 10 years earlier!
    - FF Versus 13, which became FFXV. I suggest you look it up since it’s really something unique
    - Team Bondi, of LA Noire fame, had a pretty well into development follow up called Whore of the Orient that was REALLY shaping up to be something unique
    - Demon’s Souls 2, which became the legendary Bloodborne over the course of development. Looking into the cut content and peaks of “Project Beast”’s trailer, you can tell that YES, EVERYTHING IN THE GAME began with and branched off of the original Demon’s Souls, but eventually morphed into something new. Even the lore in the game has subtle callbacks to DeS2, with many of the NPCs still having Voice Lines and Text referencing how Yharnam (called something else during the DeS2 part of development) IS Boletaria…but warped.

If anyone is intrigued by the idea of an Apocalypse Now video game, definitely check out Spec Ops: The Line. It’s a sort of retelling of Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness, but rather than criticizing war itself it’s more focused on criticizing war in video games specifically.

When I used to buy gaming magazines as a kid, there was one, MaxiConsolas (a Portuguese magazine), that had a section for news and rumors.
