In the lead-up to the May 13 elections for a 175-member Assembly, Andhra Pradesh’s fiscal health is under scrutiny. The state that enjoyed a revenue surplus for at least five consecutive years until Telangana’s formation in 2014-15 has since struggled to balance its books.
The revenue deficit, or the excess of current expenditure over current receipts, hit 3.3 per cent of Andhra’s gross state domestic product (GSDP) in 2022-23. It was projected to shrink to 2.2 per cent in the Revised Estimate for 2023-24, marking the twilight of the YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP’s) current rule. The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated the deficit, pushing it to 3.6 per cent of GSDP in 2020-21.

The point behind my question was purely about economics rather than politics. No matter where the money was given from, I wanted to know what did the people do with the money given to them. If it was spent on purchases, then part of the money given to them would come back to the government in the form of indirect taxes. If it was simply saved, then that would be bad. In the former case, the statistics should consider the increased revenue.

Nageshwar, PPP didnt increase from 2020 to 2024. it was 132 and now its still 132. The important thing to note is, globally, all markets have had a rally in last 4 years, and PPP has increased much more everywhere else, except Andhra Pradesh. Thats an important point, not to be missed.

Any idea if they have discounted COVID factor . Also how they treated the expenditure spent on schools , hospitals etc . Has it been capitalized or not? They cannot strictly compare two periods due to Covid which resulted in heavy revenue loss. Jagan revenue expenditure is clearly visible with beneficiaries whereas the same in CBN regime mostly went in to their pockets.
