  • Knott's has re-imagined their classic Timber Mountain Log Ride in 2013. Keeping the spirit of the original attractions, but bringing some of the effects and story up to date. The new ride looks AWESOME!!! Filmed by David Wagner for www.themeparkreview.com

CookinginRussia Indeed and point well taken; TMLR was in existence LONG before SM, but I don't think you can fairly insert the concept of "ripping off" to this subject. I mean, can you imagine if there was only one of EVERYTHING that has ever been made by man in the world?!
For me, Splash Mountain is superior to Timber Mountain Log Ride in nearly every tangible respect except sequence of chronology. But that does NOT take away from what TMLR offers in its own right: Fun with good theming and a generally entertaining and enjoyable vibe.

kdm71291 Having lived near these two parks for years, I can tell you that on very hot summer days, Knott's would be packed because of their water rides, most especially the log ride. Disney had no ride that got you wet, and so they went about changing that. Did they come up with something completely original? Hardly. That's what I'm saying.

    • @kdm71291
      @kdm71291 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

CookinginRussia I understand. You may also have to consider that Knott's has always been cheaper. But yeah....D-land didn't have anything that would distinctly get you wet until Splash Mtn.
I read some of the other comments that reported that Imagineer,Tony Baxter, said that it was "inspired" by TMLR at Knott's. That sounds like a reasonable explanation to me.....in every respect. :-)

This ride is legit amazing. I'm actually saddened to read the comments on here because it's all people declaring a Knott's vs Disneyland war on each other; truth is Walter Knott (Knott's founder) and Walt Disney were great friends -- FACT.
Knott's Berry Farm was the 1st themed amusement park in the USA, as a theme park beginning in 1941 (although as a berry-selling farm since 1920 and an immensely popular chicken restaurant since 1934) , and Disneyland just 6 miles away as the 2nd theme park in the US opening in 1955. Since Walter Knott and Walt Disney were close friends their parks had a friendly relationship with each other, and the 2 creators heavily and continually influenced each other and lifted from each other's ideas without the other minding.
They're really very similar parks -- both very immersive with themed sections with very strong attention to detail. The equivalent western theme is very evident in Disneyland's Frontierland and Critter Country, for instance, and both parks have antique steam trains that circle them, and each a Dentzel carousel from the 1870's -- look at the one in Knott's (in Fiesta Village) and it is remarkably similar to King Arthur's Carousel in Disneyland; Knott's carousel also has medieval setting tapestry paintings with castles whose animation looks like SLEEPING BEAUTY (one shows a caped prince on horseback atop a hill with castle in background) and the sign at the queue has a figure of a king's head with a crown and medieval/Renaissance ruffled neck collar -- this is Knott's we're talking about!
And once and for all -- Knott's log flume ride opened in 1969 as the 1st in the whole US! Disneyland's Splash Mountain opened in 1989.
This is why the friendly relationship between Knott's and Disneyland continues to this day to carry on that legacy of the founders' friendship. Knott's stores sell Disney merchandise. The Knott's Berry Farm Hotel has a free shuttle linking Knott's to Disneyland. I was in Virginia's Gift Shop in Knott's California Marketplace and was told this very thing by a clerk there. (I had some general prior knowledge of all this from books I read.) She also told me she remembered going there to Knott's when she was just a little girl in the late-1930's before it was even a theme park and she would see Walt Disney there frequently eating dinner with the Knott's at their farmhouse. The street taking you to the entrance -- Grand Blvd. -- she said was just a dirt road. And there was "just a shack in a field with people eating fried chicken."
If you go -- (DO GO! :D) -- I recommend going to Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant as it was recently refurbished to look exactly as it did when it first opened as a full restaurant in 1938 (4 years earlier the dinners were just served in the "tea room"). To restore it they used old pictures (I read this in the newspaper) of what it looked like in 1938, the different rooms with the furniture and all. I like how it really reflects how in rural America at the time the Wild West was still alive and well -- the culture and lifestyle that always fascinated Walter Knott and he always gravitated to. The restaurant is complete with a very western dining room in the barn, brown wooden-plank walls there and in other dining rooms, gas lanterns, and grinding mills like the Knott family used. Also, cool side note, Virginia's Gift Shop and its building is also from 1938, and the building with the Farm Bakery and (what became) Chicken-to-Go is from 1927 (as you're walking along there to get to the main park entrance notice the original clapboard sidewalk running from there to the restaurant and the little gas lamps beside the restaurant. Inside the park, in Ghost Town, it might be interesting to know that while some of the buildings were built there (starting in 1940-41) a lot of them were transported at the same time from western towns, some very close-by, some ghost towns, others still very well- populated. (The Blacksmith shed came from a neighboring farm.) So you're looking at and going inside of western buildings spanning from about 1850 to 1950.
So all this angry, bitter talk about which park trumps which park (and statements like "Disneyland's more detailed and does it better") -- all pure, utter nonsense. Both have definite historical links to each other (I haven't even begun to talk about how innovative the technology was at both parks, like how the animatronics in Knott's Calico Mine Ride in 1960 influenced and even made possible those in Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride that opened 7 years later. Both parks are amazing and complement each other perfectly.

Could not have said it better....I grew up loving both parks for different reasons...Knotts has the best chicken dinner ever and I mean ever...Best log flume hands down...Love potting for Gold as a kid...Terrified of Montezuma Revenge...Parachute ride scared the life out of me...Just old school cool...Family park with soul... Disneyland has the magic of the rides that tell stories and that enrich your inner spirit and I for one love the coasters at Disney like Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain and of course Legendary Matterhorn...Pirates of the Caribbean and Mr.Toad Ride are staples.. Splash Mountain is great log flume ride in itself... Those parks never rival one another ever they just created an atmosphere that brings you to life and makes you feel a joy that lives on with you forever! They made people smile and laugh which is what we all deserve :)

To those that compare this to Splash Mountain and others, calling it a worse ride, or a rip off of another ride, keep in mind that this came years before, was one of the first, if not THE first, log flume in existence and deserves some respect. Those petty little rides you speak of probably wouldn't exist if not for this ride.

So, I went to knotts back in 2008, with my family and when I went on this ride.. I saw something that kinda scared me. WHen you get to the end of the ride, before the final drop, if you look off to the side where the animations are dancing and having a fun time, You can see, a large wolf like creature, eyeballing them. Now, I don't know if they took it out or not, cause I can't find anything on this, Only thing I have found was Knotts Scary farm, werewolf scare zone, and a werewolf themed timber log ride. It kinda scared me to be honest. I don't know if it was just me, or if others saw it as well.

actually, I just took this ride this week. It was a great ride, very comparable to anything at Disneyland, with one huge difference....the price. Disney is way overpriced. And when I went there, 4 rides shut down AFTER I waited almost 2 hours on each. And right before I got on the roller coaster, a group from our school got stuck on the top. Thanks, but I'm through with Disney. Too much price. Too much hype. You'd think for all the bucks they make, they could keep their rides better maintained.
Only one ride was down during my two days at Knotts. I rode Excelerator 5 times. I had a great time. I hope to go back there or to the park that owns them, Cedar Point. Never again, will I pay money to go to any Disney park.

Great memories of Knott's since I was a kid living a block from there in the 70's; we used to go all the time. My grandma liked to go there when it first opened for their chicken dinners in the 1940's. They used to have an alligator farm when you entered in at the front gate. Loved that place, it was without the chaos and expense of other amusement parks! The Knott's couple visited Disneyland to support Walt Disney when he first opened his park. At that time Knott's was bigger than Disneyland.

doubletroubletoil Splash mountain was July 17th 1989 which was AFTER this was built but this ride was not what inspired Imagineers to build this, it was the movie Country Bears Jamboree! If anyone knows about Disney, Its me

This ride actually opened in 1969, 20 years before Splash Mountain and is even said to be the inspiration for the DL ride just down the street. Probably not too many commenters here know that. I first rode it in 1972.

This ride was there long before Splash Mountain and the biggest differance in it now is there's better and more audiomatronics. Disney copied from Knotts! I used to dance there with the Calico dancers back in the early 80's and boy do I have a lot of fond memories of this ride ;)

I remember going to this park back in 1976 when I was like 5 years old. I don't remember too much about the visit other than a roller coaster didn't make it up one of the hills it was suppose to climb and it slide back down. No one was hurt and I remember everyone laughing about it.

The similarities between this and Splash Mountain really are crazy. Start with going up a hill into a shack, go through scenes with lights on, a drop in the dark, scenes with lights off, up a hill, a scene as you go up the hill, and the same kind of bluegrass music although obviously Splash Mountain music >>>>>>
