    Best advice I can give having passed my test a few months ago and have been using motorways regularly - if you're driving in the left lane, keep an eye out for signs and the stubby divider lines telling you that lane is going to turn into a sliproad off the motorway. I accidentally turned off the motorway a couple of times just because I was keeping left lol.

      Same here, first time drove on motorway and I thought I was going straight but the left lane converted into a sliproad. This video is useful!

    Your instructions are very helpful but you are always wrong on distance in icy conditions, it is 10 times the dry conditions so 10 into 2 is 20 seconds.

    A great idea here but there are many times in the video where you should be in the left lane and you continue in the middle. I always feel it's not that people don't know the rules, so much they are not paying full attention. You also could add that joining from a slip you should be looking for a space on the approach and it is your responsibility to join safely and not others to move for you.

    New driver here. Left London to go to Rochester and somehow ended up in a left lane which then became a drop lane and I had to change lanes very last minute. I can’t seem to find videos which explain how to identify that a lane becomes a drop lane or that say, 2 new lanes that join the existing 3 lanes, will not all stay (5 lane carriageway) and some will drop off. I want to avoid having to move lanes so I can always stay in the left lane behind the lorries.

    Hi Francis, what is your view on passing on left (undertake). I believe by the Highway Code it is not illegal even at 70mph. Most UK drivers say it can only be done in slow moving traffic.

    • @AM2K2
      @AM2K2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cars don't drive bumper to bumper on the motorway or dual carriageway, there is generally a gap. If there is slow moving traffic, you'll be stopping anyway. My method is I pick a 'target' car on the road and I judge their speed, now I either get ahead of them or I slow down to slip in behind them. It is pretty dangerous to come to a complete stop on a slip road so try to avoid that, I used to be pretty anxious on slip roads but you'll gain confidence the more you do it.

    • @Dagr8soldjer
      @Dagr8soldjer 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's not up to the traffic to give way to you. The onus is on you to merge safely. Most people's problem is that they don't look for a gap until they are running out of slip road, they just assume everything will be fine when they get to the top of the slip road. This is poor planning. Pick a gap as early as possible and start matching your speed and position to that gap.

    Please explain the rules about letting traffic join the motorway. Thank you

    • @Dagr8soldjer
      @Dagr8soldjer 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is the responsibility of vehicles on the entrance slip road to merge safely with traffic. Traffic on the carriageway does not have to change lanes or speed to help you, although good drivers will often attempt to create space for you. Do not rely on this. Good defensive driving is about planning your manoeuvre based on the worst case scenario. Pick a safe gap early and match your speed and position to that gap, that way all you have to do is move over in a controlled predictable manner.

  • @simonmeadows7961
    @simonmeadows7961 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I have a question. Let's say you're entering on a slip lane and that lane merges. I.e. it runs out. You've been looking in your mirror for a safe gap to move over, but there isn't one. What do you do? Do you stop at the end of the slip road and treat it as a give way or do you pull out in front of someone at high speed? Neither seems safe to me.

    • @Dagr8soldjer
      @Dagr8soldjer 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If it is unsafe to merge you use the hard shoulder to merge same as if you are rejoining the motorway after a breakdown, anything else is just dangerous. But for the record, 99.9% of the time there is a gap, people just do a poor job of matching speed to the space either Infront of or behind the vehicles in lane 1.

    0:29 No it’s not! It is on a dual carriageway but not on a motorway because they’re longer and sometimes wider.

    Hi Francis, since using motorways, I have noticed so many potholes, which can be detrimental to your car/tyres, how do you avoid these safely, especially when going at faster speeds. Sometimes, depending on situation/road conditions, may not be safe to avoid? Cheers :)
    PS: great video by the way!

    • @DrivingSchoolTV
      @DrivingSchoolTV  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m not sure there is a safe way to avoid a hole in the road at 70mph when you’d only see it when the car in front has passed it. That’s going to be 2-4 seconds of notice to check mirrors, and swerving at high speed is definitely a bad idea. I’d suggest holding the steering wheel tighter, go over the hole and report it to highways agency when you’ve stopped.
