Hello Friends,
Welcome to our 8th episode of 'Bharat Darshan' series. In this series we talk about several Indian States and Union Territories. Today it's turn for an Indian State #Meghalaya.
Meghalaya meaning 'abode of clouds', is a state in #NorthEastIndia.Meghalaya is one of the seven sister States of northeast India. It was formed by craving out two district from the state of Assam: the United KhasiHills and JayantiaHills and the GaroHills on 21st Jan 1972.
Meghalaya was previously part of Assam, but on 21st Jan 1972, the district of Garo Khasi and Jayantia Hills became the new state of Meghalaya. The state bound to the south by the Bangladeshi divisions of Mymensingh and Sylhet, to the west by the Bangladeshi division of Rangpur and to the north and east by Assam. The British imperial authorities nicknamed it the 'Scotland of the East'.
Meghalaya is one of three states in India to have a Christian majority. About 75% of the population practices Christianity. Tribal people make up the majority of Meghalaya's population. The Khasis are the largest group. English is the official language of the state.
Meghalaya is an agricultural state. A portion of the cultivated area is under the traditional shifting agriculture known as Jhum.
The town of Shora (Cherrapunji) in the khasi hills south of capital shillong holds the world record for most rain in a calendar month. There are numerous Meghalaya tourists places that are well known all over the world, some of the most spectacular places are NohkalikaiFalls, ElephantFalls, Mawlynnong falls, the longest cave like #Mawsmai cave, Krem Liat Prah etc.
