No you don't understand. As an American all my choices and motivations come from 9/11.
As someone who liked the combat of Control this looks really similar, I'll have to give it a go

My brain first went to Quantic dream when seeing the title. That studio lives rent free in my mind sadly. Never forget.

Damn, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this game for doing something different. That said, it's definitely the lowest point I think Remedy has gone. I love Alan Wake and Control was probably the best game they've made in a long time, but I'll always at least appreciate the concepts of the game, even if it's cheesy. Great review as always my friend.

This game would've been a lot better if Remedy fleshed it out more and didn't do the weird half game half show bullshit. In style it still feels very much like a Remedy game. Thankfully they got back on track with Control, that's a damn good game.

@@tylertheguy3160 I really don't mind the TV show aspect of it, especially since that could just be skipped on repeat playthroughs. I think the bigger problem with this game was it's core game design. The game gives you all of these interesting time abilities, but pretty much every enemy goes down the exact same way. In fact, even on hard mode, the enemies can barely touch you. I got excited when I encountered new enemy variants that can leap through stutters and teleport everywhere, but even they aren't really much different in that regard. What's worse is that everything outside of combat is pretty much a linear hallway with not much to do outside of occasionally platforming, or doing some very light puzzle solving.
Control felt like a straight up improvement on Quantum Breaks formula in my eyes, as it has a ton of interesting enemies to actually use your powers on. Plus, everything outside of combat consists of exploration and finding lore. It just feels like this game wasn't pushed far enough to reach it's potential. If they ever give it another chance, I'd love to see what they'd do with a sequel.

My brain just had to switch off trying to follow the plot/story progression. Even with you explaining it as it went along, it felt like they were aiming for high concept but didn't know how to execute it and just ended up making it as cliched and trope heavy as possible, and it just felt like I was watching a made for syfy mini-series everytime the live action scenes kicked in. I hate to think of Sam Lake in the same way as David Cage but that's where my head was at pretty much right from the start, and the rest of the plot and acting did nothing to change that :/
    Great video though!

Goddamn this was one funny review lol. Another banger of a vid my good man!
This game had a lot of weird shit in the plot but otherwise had that overall mark of Remedy quality. I'm not sure if Sam Lake actually even wrote the plot to this strange beast, because if I remember right the writing credits went to two people who I'd never heard of and also wondered what the fuck they were trying to pull here. If Sammy Lake himself isn't writing the game, then perhaps don't make that game because it's gonna end up like a pair of balls at the end of a particularly hot day. Greasy and deflated. (How's that for a mental image ehhhhh)

Great video as aways! Are you planning a review for Control sometime? I think it's their best game yet.
Anyway, this game is oddly fun, if it was not for the stuff you mentioned and they got a bit more creative with the time travel shenanigans, this could have been Remedy's best game...but oh well

I just want to say, you are one of the best video essayists I've seen on this platform. Thank you for putting out such entertaining, thoughtful, and well-researched content. Your sense of humor is wonderful, and coming off of a marathon of your David Cage videos, the grace and finesse with which you addressed those same topics that French Kojima himself so carelessly fumbled is really impressive and appreciated. :)

This game was bundled with my Xbox One, and outside of being really impressed by the visuals, I don't think there was like a single thing that stood out about the game other than "Oh, Lance Reddick (RIP) and Aidan Gillen were in those wierd live action episodes that felt like they wanted to be Fringe but had the budget of a mid-tier CW show."
It's one of those games for me like the original Lost Planet where I know I beat the game, but I remember nothing about it. If anything, I remember what I was doing outside of playing those games more vividly (my cousin was visiting and he had tonsillitis and vomited all over my room while I was playing a rented copy of Lost Planet).

I really liked the game despite it's flaws. It's more than the sum of its parts.
The gameplay is a basic third person shooter with cool powers, the plot is nothing special and Sometimes makes no sense (like all time travel plots) and the real life show is on a CW level but as a whole all these parts make a special game that deserves to be remembered.

The fact this is Remedy's weakest game stands as a testament to how amazing of a studio they are, when even with all the flaws and shortcomings of trying to make Don Mattrick's insanity into reality, they still managed to make something fun to experience.
Also, the one thing that becomes clear with this video: Quantum Break is a game that David Cage would make in a timeline where he actually was a semi-competent writer :P

At least they cast Courtney Hope as the main character in Control. The story in that is awesome and it doesn't have to make sense. It's based on SCP and is the closest thing we'll get to a AAA SCP game. Combat is pretty fun, and is one of the best looking games I've played. Its definitely in my top 10, but I'm also a huge SCP nerd. Its also probably the closest we'll ever get to another psyops game. If you're reading this and you haven't played it you're missing out.

The game had a lot of promise, shame they slapped a shitty CW TV show on it and aside from the interesting time abilities the gameplay is really just a basic third person shooter.
