I am obsessed with Mercy Thompson. Im not going to shove it on you BUT i wil say that it does not feel like most modern paranormal romances, its more actiony and I love that Mercy is such a strong female lead. I also love that her monsters are monsters they are not softened by any means like most paranormal romances.

I was going to say something similar. For me it feels closer to urban fantasy than paranormal romance. I am not sure I'd even truly call it a romance. It's there but it's definitely not the main focus.

I agreed. She’s one of my fav authors. Sure there’s a romance. But it’s not the main story. It’s more villain of the week/trouble of the week stories.

Mercy Thompson isn’t paranormal romance, it’s urban fantasy. There is a romance, but it’s slow burn and more of a side plot. It’s a really cool world. I reread the first 4 of those books every year. Patricia Briggs writes creatures so realistically, that if vampires and werewolves existed, they would be how she writes them.
Also, Bec McMasters books are wonderful! I really love her vampire series.

Fun fact about the Kelley Armstrong series you held up but both of those are actually part of the larger Otherworld series. The Summoning is actually a YA with a necromancer MC but great. HOWEVER, since you love FAE I'd recommend you pick up her Cainsville series which starts with Omens. It's kinda a thriller/fantasy hybrid featuring reincarnation fae romance, a love triangle that's actually well done with two very hot men and also the fae are Welsh which is awesome. I think you might like it and you'd possibly like it more than the Otherworld books though some of those you'd like others less so.

The Summoning was my favorite for so so so long, my OG favorite.

I’m so glad I managed to snag a ticket to RARE. If I managed to see you in the wild (at the event) would you be okay if I said hi. (I totally understand if you don’t want strangers coming up to you while you’re trying to enjoy the event and I would obviously respect that) I am so grateful for your channel and the joy that you bring to the bookish community.
And for this video because my Paris RARE TBR and my Edinburgh RARE TBR is excessive 😊

OMG I love both Kelley Armstrong and Patricia Briggs are two of my favs !! Also Kelley Armstrong is Canadian and she has mystery and Thriller series as well and they're too GOOD!! and Patricia Briggs and her Mercy Thompsons series is actually really good I loved that Romance is a side plot and in my opinion more its not front and centre at all and the actual story is pretty good and gets better with every book. It's more a mix of supernatural creatures (werewolves, shapeshifter, vampires, fae, etc. with mystery throughout.
Also the Fallen Men series is pretty good also.

I'm actually reading Lola and The Millionairs right now! It really is a good pick if you're not into reverse harems, it has a pretty strong found family vibe which ties everything together imo. It was my first omegaverse series too, it just ends up reading like a werewolf romance.

I think you will love The Crown of Oaths and Curses by J Bree. It is simply not talked about enough. I just read it last month and it is easily in my top 5 reads of the year. It is an epic fantasy, slow build, slow burn, with true enemies to lovers who are fated mates. There is no romance in the first book, that's how slow burn it is, which is my fav, honestly. The magical forest and descriptions felt like I was in a Tolkien inspired world. I also highly recommend reading the 2 prequel novellas, The Scepter and The Sword, before picking up. The enemies portion hits even better.

Omg defo read Inadequate Heir, I read Bridge Kingdom 1 and 2 I like them but oh my god they are NOT comparable to book 3, it’s hands down the best smut I’ve ever read but also the best romance EVER. Do yourself a favour it’s ridiculously better, not comparable. But be aware it takes place during bridge kingdom 2 events.

I think you would love J. Bree's The Crown of oaths and curses because is very slowburn enemies to lovers. But you need to read both precuel novellas before (they are 90 pages each) to understand what happened.

I can also say that the Mercy Thompson series is quite good on audiobook if that might be easier to slip into for an out of your normal style.

Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, and Melissa Marr are favourite authors of mine. The Otherworld series, follows different couples throughout the series, though most of them have more then one book. I really love them, Kelley Armstrong writes such smart women, who get put into dangerous situations, and have just my right kind of humor. And the Wicked Lovely series, I'm actually a bit surprised that a traditional publisher in YA published that because it was really ahead for its time.

I love Mercy Thompson - it's more urban fantasy!
I know you don't love paranormal romance, but if you ever want to give them a try again, I'd strongly suggest Immortals after Dark series by Kresley Cole! They're spicier and I love her spin on classic paranormal creatures, and how punchy and snarky her female characters are. She's the only author whose does fated mates in a way I like! (I strongly do not love a hunger like no other, bk 1, I find it old-school and problematic, but you can skip it because its absolutely not integral to the overarching plot)

Melissa Marr is my favorite! She has a new romance coming out in February, Remedial Magic. She doesn’t do many shows and is just starting to get back out again. While Graveminder is not really a romance I would recommend it.

Great to see you back in another video, have to say I love Kathryn Moon and I am reading one of her series just now that I have currently paused only to finish reading Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. The series I am reading is so far addictive reading and I would definitely recommend giving her book a try

The Crown of Oaths and Curses by J Bree was surprisingly good. I’m always skeptical on fantasy romance by random authors I find on KU because so many have been so terrible. I read this when I was trying to get back into reading after a months long slump and it took me a bit to get into because the writing was not my jam but by the end I gave it a 4 star and I’m excited for the second book to come out. But also, it’s for sure a slow burn, there’s zero romance in the first book. In fact, the male character is truly horrible to her for the majority of the book and he’s got some heavy groveling to do if I’m ever going to like him. I liked the female character though, she had a quiet strength to her that I appreciated watching develop throughout the first book.

Oh if you'd read Melissa Marr back in the day I think you would have really enjoyed them, each one is a fey romance. Although each book is a separate couple (mostly) and I know you don't love that.

Great video and as usual I added some books to my TBR pile.
Patricia Briggs is one of my favourite authors. I'd say she writes urban fantasy not paranormal romance. There is some romance in her stories but it's more about different creatures living together and main character trying to solve problems and mysteries. The author also doesn't romanticize vampires, werewolves, fae, and other creatures. They are scary and can do awful things.

I met her and her son at an Empire Medieval Pursuits event. I was reading Moon Called, and she was like, "Hey, how is that book?" I told her I love it. I'm almost done now. I wish I had brought the second one. She told me that makes me so happy to hear. Hi, I'm the author. Whoa okay nice I love the supernatural, urban fantasy feel, and the characters are amazing. With the suspense and mysteries!
