This is the most beautiful sitar song I've ever heard, discovered it 15 years ago, back then, TH-cam was still at 480p highest resolution, and there was a full video of them playing, but sadly I can't find the video anymore, but I'm glad I found the full song! Didn't know it existed. I wish I was there, I missed out on the best decodes of the 20th century!
In high school I had this 3 album set and played this over and over and over again. Not only that I actually saw the Ravi Shankar and George Harrison concert in Chicago. Ravi asked the audience to please refrain from smoking and people listened to him. I was in seventh heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the funniest thing for me was when Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Alla Rakha sat down and started playing, after a minute the crowd went wild... Ravi said, "If you like the main show as much as the tuning up, we are in for a good night".
@@malbig2344 The comment that I was referring to actually was part of the "Concert For Bangla Desh", which we are here privileged to be listening to. Both George Harrison and Ravi Shankar commented(spoke) at the concert, the concert was held at Madison Square Garden New York City
I saw Ravi in Phoenix in Spring of 1973 at Star Theatre in the round...revolving stage. I lived in a 3HO Yoga Ashram and we got a backstage visit. He was a kind and polite man of compassion for the hippies.
The Village Voice, use to, I do not know if these days this still is observed, however The Village Voice of 1971 use to conduct a survey at the end of the year asking of their readership to submit a list of the 20 best albums for the year of 1971. To be certain there were albums like "All Things Must Pass", "Concert For Bangla Desh" maybe some might remember James Gang "Yer Album"(that made my top twenty albums for 1971) and so on. The reason why I mention this is that The Concert for Bangla Desh" was such a turn-on that when I reviewed the album for the top twenty albums of the year I said in no uncertain terms "that the concert was the greatest experience of my life".That statement apparently caught the attention of the paper and it was used and printed in the paper a short while later. That is how excellent it was to have been fortunate enough to have been there and to have participated just so. A great Concert, "The Concert For Bangla Desh".
Bangladesh can still use our concerned prayerful attention today Oct 2021... 50 years on from this legendary concert effort. The devotees of Hare Kṛṣṇa were physically assaulted with fatal causalities. The mob of about 500 Muslim radicals also desecrated their small center, burning sacred books, and destroying the whole property. This is still going on . Villages are being burnt to the ground by these fanatics. Hare Krishna. My Sweet Lord. Please help the poor Innocents.
The combination of Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan (sarod) and Alla Rakha (tabla) made this a magical performance. Shankar's sitar teacher was Khan's father, Ustad Allauddin Khan. The guru encouraged his students to play different instruments, hence Shankar (formerly a classic dancer) on sitar, Khan on sarod and Khan's sister Annapurna Devi on surbahar (like a tenor or bass sitar). Shankar and Khan then became as close as brothers, and when Shankar married Khan's sister (arguably the greatest Surbahar player in history), he and Khan became brothers-in-law.
Thanks for bringing this lovely classical music to the West & how you used this to help a nation in crisis. You Bengali musicians are great. (Gr Britain Sat 14 Dec 2019 2216)
I guess George is absent here with his violin ! & to the best of my listening the fusion is being played by Ravi Shankar (Sitar), Ali Akbar Khan (Sarod) & Alla Rakka (Tabla) !!
The beauty of this music is hard to grasp. As if Spirit itself were playing Through these open vessels .God, Buddha ,and Krishna bless them all ..They are with the infinite now .
This was a very anticipated recording.I can recall with true care and fondness this time and this great event. It was to be certain both an inspiring concert and this Album remain as a testament perhaps even a belief in this world as help was on its way. The original Vinyl had the "Tune Up" with George Harrison introducing (I want to thank for coming here)the indian music(a little more serious than our music) and Ravi Shankar and friends on the same side."Bangla Dhun" is much in the line of a highly spirited exercise in the craft of the Sitar and Indian music. This might almost be said to perhaps be the best side of the multi-album recording, that The concert for Bangla Desh generated. To be certain "Bangla Dhun" is a great listen with much more great performances to come.Inspiring, exhilarating a real great memory.
I have always wondered just what it meant the Lennon and McCartney weren't on this album. Scheduling conflicts or they weren't interested in charity gigs? It seems like the only performer at this concert that is still alive is Ringo Starr. Who would have predicted that in 1971?
THIS WAS A VERY GENEROUS EFFORT ON THE PART OF RAVI & GEORGE, WITH SO MANY GREAT MUSICIANS HEADED BY BOB DYLAN DOING THEIR SHARE. IT BEGAN THE WAVE OF BENEFIT CONCERTS. SADLY today Bangladesh still needs help. Hare Krishna devotees were not spared in the frenzied, irrational, and passionately violent attacks by not an individual attacker, but a mob of 500+ organized haters. THEY ARE BURNING VILLAGES AND DESTROYING PROPERTY, AND COMMITING MURDER. These persecutions of INNOCENT devotees of Our Sweet Lord, (MY SWEET LORD), even 50 years after the war in 1971 are inexcusable horrors. 🙏🏻📿😓📿🙏🏻
I've heard many Sitar players. I am a Sitar player too. I've heard so many people complain and find fault with Ravi. But c'mon folks, after hearing this piece, how many can say that they've heard better? They always say that they heard of a sitarist here or there, but they never give the proof, which would be an actual recording. Well, here is an actual recording.
Friends all took acid now we are driving around I'm the only sober one and I'm in charge of the music they are all moving their heads every time Ravi Shankar strums that sitar with closed eye and I can see my buddy Fat moe is getting goosebumps. White rabbit at woodstock is next then ravi Shankar at Monterey pop.🔥🔥

Could someone somewhere please post the Ravi Shankar single A-side: Joi Bangla/Oh Bhaugowan, B-side: Raga Mishra--Jhinjhoti single from Apple Records (UK: Apple 37/US: Apple 1838)? I believe it was produced by George Harrison and released 1971.

Same for me. Saw Harrison and Shankar in Dallas.
I did not know they both performed at other places. Ravi toured so much that he pushed his body and had a heart attack around 50.

How fortunate to have been there.
I am grateful to Ravi Shankar. Thanks from Bangladesh.

Not heard this in forever, I had forgotten just how brilliant it is, thanks for sharing. And isn't that what it's all about.
I love India and Indian classical music which takes one's soul on the dusty but unforgetable roads of its vast country !
Listen to each note Ravi is playing. It's amazing!
"Please no smoking" - I love this guy.
