HUGE SEA TURTLE RESCUE! (Green Sea Turtle entangled in fishing line)

- February 23, 2023 my friend and I went diving out on the west side of Oahu. I spotted this turtle with fishing line wrapped around its front left fin and leading to its mouth. Thankfully there was no hook. We were able remove all of it. We theorize that it had gotten tangled in the line and the turtle was trying its best to untangle itself by biting and gathering up the line in its mouth. We eventually found the rest of the fishing line tangled on the reef and were able to remove it. We assume the line was flown out using a drone given that we were over a quarter mile from shore. The fishing line we found had the same color and amount of degradation as the one on the turtle. Our theory is that the turtle had gotten tangled, was able break free, then tried removing the fishing line itself.

he absolutely didn't understand what you were trying to do, he was probably just tired and/or confused why he was let go and you weren't trying to pursue him again. Sea turtles don't tend to flee from predators after a while, in fact they stick close until the predator gives up, at least that's what they do with tiger sharks. They'll try to angle themselves so the flat of their back is facing the shark's mouth, preventing it from getting a grip on their shell

This makes you wonder if there will be any sea life left in fifty years. Or if all the oceans will have swimming around will be plastic and whatever other garbage mankind can fill the oceans with. Thanks to these concerned, caring, and brave young men, this turtle now has a second chance. But for how much longer? 😭

he didn't realize that at all. Almost no animal species on earth is capable of that kind of reasoning. it's more likely that the turtle was either tired, or confused and choosing to conserve energy in case it needed to struggle more

That rescue job looked so stressful, not the least because we thought there could be a hook in the sea turtle's mouth. If I were to try something like this, I would need a support vessel of some kind, like a raft or a small boat to have something sturdy to rest the turtle against while making sure all the lines could be removed, especially from the tight loops around its flukes. Very well done, it seemed like you handled the trouble expertly, as well as expressing joy at the end of the job. A huge relief, both to you and to us, your viewers. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much. Yeah, this was the largest turtle we've ever untangled. A boat would definitely be ideal, but we're just hobby spearfisherman. Luckily we were able to make it work.

Wasn't it incredible when the turtle realized they were helping and stopped trying to swim away? I own 2 red eared slider turtles, they're just babies compared to that big guy, but I see them in this turtle. They're really smart, and mine are weirdly good climbers too, they climbed the baby gate to try to get to the kitchen lol
