You are NOT ready for "Wings" and "!0,000 days" yet. But when you do listen to them you MUST listen to them back to back and make sure you have the lyrics. If you listen to older Tool and then progress through the newer stuff you can see how Maynard has dealt with losing his mother and has grown as a person and artist. Just make sure you have a bod of kleenex handy as well.

Lengthy Tool intros - oh yeah. Vicarious definitely in my top 10 from them, MJK is such a master lyricist / social commentator. Even if not into doing live versions, you should check out Sober live (Reading 1993) if only for Maynard's stunning performance. And you really need to do Hooker with a Penis, judging by all your other Tool reactions should be right in your sweet spot.

Vicarious is one of my favorites. The song itself, by examination, is much different than most Tool songs, in a few ways. It's Maynard examining life from a different angle, to each all a simple lesson. The music is, as always, exceptional. It's easy for this song to play because it's such an evil, almost taboo subject, so that plays right into the evil sounds. Unlike other Tool songs where we have time to just take into the moment, Vicarious is a rip roaring adventure. In that way it's a bit like 'Tick and Leeches', but in a different way. Both songs feeling more 'metal' than most of Tools later work. All your comments are always appreciated. It's the jam! ;)
Add on: I'm sure you've heard this already, but Wings for Marie must be listened to with 10,000 Days. It really must.

Some Tool songs have great intros. For example Eulogy which adds layer upon layer ( perhaps you might need to come up with new hand gestures for your headphone). Other Tool songs have a separate intro like Rosetta Stoned where the intro is Lost Keys. It sets you up for a musical masterpiece but brace yourself for Maynard's performance (which is going to render you speechless). I loved your facial expression when you heard Vicarious a second time, can't wait to see it after Rosetta Stoned's finale. And... vicarious has presented you the "low low Maynard" and the "la la Maynard".

Laur, on the surface, this song is about our desensitization. However, if you contextualize Maynard’s whole body of work, incorporating A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, it’s really about our lust for other people’s failure. In our never ending folly of artificially elevating our self-worth, self-importance and self-indulgence, we take solace in other’s failures. Maynard is all about us, we, being more. But, as long as we are a rubbernecking species, a Kardashian consuming people, we will never know what it is to be more.

Take as long as you need, but once you do, "Wings and 10K" are 1 long song...
You know how they love their intros, well, "Wings" is an epic intro to "10,000 Days"
I believe they wanted to have something that they could do on tour because performing the whole song, nearly every night, would be "torture", and probably impossible to pull off at the time
Now, with their skills, they could probably do it as a whole, but it's probably really hard for Maynard to get through it... Their new album shows that they're capable of doing some pretty long songs, and I'm sure they're a challenge for even them...but damn, their endurance...

Concerning your views on not listening to Wings For Marie / 10,000 Days songs yet, all good. They are amongst my fav ever, but are def emotional. Find it ironic that the first song on this album is Vicarious (about the voyeuristic nature of humans), and then include two songs where he opens his mind/heart up on something as incredibly personal as the death of his mother for every listener to "watch" from the safety of their own space. After the album was released, he was offended by music critics that would break down things that personal into the most impersonal of talking points. Said he'd never expose himself that way again.
Perhaps you have a personal reason for not wanting to listen to those yet. If so, you have my empathy and understanding. However, when the time feels right, perhaps they will help bring you feelings of acceptance and closure in a way similar to how they seem to have done for others. And if such a thing isn't something you want others to see, then don't. Do it your way and on your terms :)

And since you love these epic lyrics but prefer longer introductions try listening to Eulogy and Invincible, two more of my favorite Tool songs.

Wings pt1 and 2 is my favorite tool song, but this is my favorite for casual listening. The former is something you really need to sit down and appreciate when hearing it

Hands down my favorite Tool song. This one is just so visceral and honest and psychologically charged.

Such a unique, talented and progressive band on many levels. Tool is more of an experience than a band. There can be only one. Spiral Out...

I used to be a technical instructor and writer. 3 ways that people learn; read then do, just go for it and learn by mistake and watch someone else do it and learn, vicarious. How did cavemen teach their young to hunt? Watch from a safe distance and learn what works. I think that is what this song is about, watching from a safe distance and understand what works and what doesn't work in many different scenarios. How often do we watch something on the screen and say to ourselves and others how we would have done it different and better?

Just saying… you don’t really need to explain that “it might not look like you like it but you really enjoy it”. You’re just taking it all in on a first time listen and there’s so much to take in. We totally get it!

I'm super jealous that I can't hear this song for the first time ever again. I was there when it was released as a downloadable single before the album itself, and I must have listened to it about 20 times in a row that night. I was absolutely blown away!

I completely understand about Wings for Marie. I LOVE all the songs about his mother, but I just cannot listen without knowing I have plenty of time to myself, a whole box of tissues and am ready to...just really be in my feelings and be extremely sad. Anyway, I checked out your store. I think I need an Angry Maynard shirt. Hopefully, that will happen tomorrow. I would also love a sticker. Any idea when those will be available?
