I'm not a Tool fan, don't love them, don't hate them. This was a pretty good song. Just don't like the abrupt vocals and the agree the vocals need to be brought up in the mix.

It's ok if you guys are split. Dad seems to like songs you can pick up quickly and sing along to, almost top 40 style. Tool is a cerebral band. They have their own genre, complicated time signatures. The lyrics are usually very deep, not easy listening, but fun to decipher. The instrumentalists are at another level, a higher level. Maynard considers his vocals another instrument. They all do their own thing without one guy getting all the attention. Please go to a LIVE show. You will never forget it !!

Just been reading the Wiki entry on this song - from the very detailed description, I'm sort of glad you decided not do the music video version! I find with most Tool songs I've heard, that's the best policy. Without the benefit of a weird video, I usually think this band might be selected by Michael Mann for another Miami Vice movie soundtrack. Probably appeals to the Grand Theft Auto gamer generation, so I get where Father is coming from.
Their videos are very odd. And yes it would fit with Miami Vice.
@@cherylreichardt - the movie, not the TV series. Both are very much of their time and this song is from the same year the movie was released. Sounds a bit like the Audioslave songs on the soundtrack.
@@cherylreichardt - by a stunning coincidence, Michael Mann's new mini-series production, Tokyo Vice, started on BBC1 this evening. Had no idea it was coming. First two epsiodes, first one also directed by Michael Mann, were very good.

Wonder where dad comes from musically. I grew up loving The Grateful Dead, Peter Gabriel and jazz, and I LOVE Tool. It does get better with each listen, so first listens aren’t a good idea with this band.
Horrible take by the dad. Every part of the band is above and beyond any other musician. Guy should be dropped from the channel for not recognizing greatness! TOOL army!!
My mom loved the music too, but always lost interest when Maynard started singing. Fuckin old people, man. They just don't get it.
Tool is definitely not for everyone. They’re unique, and Maynard doesn’t always belt out singing because he and the rest of the group understand this - it’s about the music as a whole, not one guy showing off.
I love them, and perhaps being a bass player is a reason why, and I love than Ethan gets them. This song is actually my favourite song by them, although history has not been kind to the lyrics. I’d recommend “Opiate” from their first EP as the next song. Cheers guys!

This is so funny. I watched your Tool reactions like 6 months ago and your father like hated it to the bone.
You can clearly see after the 3/4 of the song he`s started to enjoy some of Tool`s music, then he decided to hate again.
Keep working on it boy, you`ll turn him into a Tool monster soon, and when he gets there there`s no turning back :)

I agree with Larry. I wouldn't listen to Tool even if there's nothing wrong with the band and they are very talented but it's just something that doesn't connect with me. But that said I must admit that this might be the best Tool song this far for me.
I'd much rather listen to all of old Springsteen up to before the Born in the USA album than Tool aside from the album that has Schism

So glad to see you guys finally come back to TOOL. About a year ago I badgered you guys for awhile to do Vicarious so you didn't forget! I love this song, but I do respect Larry for keeping it honest. I will say that for me, many times I need several listens for a song really starts to grab me and that probably goes double for TOOL. I wouldn't be shocked if after five more listens (if he's willing to do that), Larry might start warming up to them.
I'd like to add about Maynard's vocals, one of the things that makes him special is how he can sound completely different from song to song, almost like he's not even the same singer. I would now recommend trying Descending. The music is sensational, and while the vocal portions are relatively minimal, I think Maynard's voice comes through quite clearly and pleasantly. Larry may just like that one.
Like Larry I understand that they are great musicians but I still don't really 'get' Tool but ,hey, it's good to agree to disagree at times!
This is definitely better than 'Stinkfish' and I wouldn't turn it off if I heard it on the radio but I wouldn't go out of my way to turn it on!
Tool remind me very much of The Mars Volta - a band from El Paso - they are a progressive band that grew from a punk background but now have weird time signatures and stuff and they have die hard fans like Tool.
Ethan, you might like their stuff not so sure about Dad though! Cassandra Gemini is 32 minutes long but is a great starting point for anyone who hasn’t heard the band. Although it’s long and really intense, it goes through all the emotions and sounds that the band do. There’s loads of really cool stuff in there.
i recently watched Paul Simon and his big band play "Late In The Evening" , the bass is prominent and the music and lyrics blend (i won't say splendidly) very well. i think Father and Son would like it. peace.

The sun likes it so that's cool. I've been listening to tool since the 90s and it took a long time for me to like them as much as I do. They creep on you.

And these lyrics are brilliant.
THIS is my favorite Tool song.
Can relate to it and the musicianship is flawless.
And Tool is just heavy enough to bang your head to.
Believe it or not but, the difference in opinion in this Tool reaction has actually made this video more enjoyable. As a viewer, I like to see both sides of the argument. Awesome video guys!
