  • Hi all! Long time since I properly uploaded last. Since the suspected broken gearbox at Oulton we've had the whole rear end of the car out to investigate. Suspecting the issue was with the box we replaced it with an upgraded unit thanks to Andrew Goater (Search "PG1 Gearbox Chat" on FB or "agoaty" on eBay). We now have closer gear ratios and a Quaife LSD instead of the Torsen B we had before. Initial impressions are that the Quaife LSD has dramatically changed the handling of the car for the better and the lap times show it. I'll do a follow-up comparison video on this down the line.
In the end, it was just a cascade of very badly broken wheel bearings that caused the loud noises at Oulton. We're trying better quality bearings this time in the hope we don't have a return of the same issues.
Anyway managed to get back to Cadwell which has allowed to us do some comparison and testing (hopefully somewhere different soon...). Here are the only two fully clear laps I got on the day. Had some interesting chases with mostly MX5's so there should be a vid of some of those to follow. Unfortunately, a sheared bolt in the gear linkage prevented us from seeing out the day but had a great time on this Track Obessesion track day. Hope you enjoy!
    Cheers!

What setup do you have for brakes and tyres? The 16in rins limit tyre choice but allow for the ap racings but the 15s have loads of tyre choice so is there a way to upgrade the brakes on the 15in rims?

We use 16" Abingdon (ex-cup car) wheels which are the lightest option you can get other than the "ultralights" which are very rare and expensive. We use the standard AP 4 pot calipers front and rear with a bias valve controlling the rear. You can't normally fit 4 pots behind Abingdons without a large spacer but we've done some quite serious hub/hub flange modifications so that we are running minimal spacer without affecting geometry to much. Cup cars had special low profile AP calipers. Fitting 4 pots under 15'' wheels requires serious caliper modification which I would say is bordering on dangerous.
We use 225/45r16 Nankang AR1's square, which are taller diameter than standard but much wider. There are lots of options in this size as well as 215/45 and 205/45 I think. 225/45r16 is essentially the same tire size as the slicks the cup cars used. In theory you do loose a little acceleration but the increase in grip far outweighs that.

Nice. Are you using the fixed height Spax dampers or the adjustable platform ones? I’ve got a set of adjustable spax’s to fit to mine.

Cheers! These are the fully adjustable spax. Seem to be really good so far. Wanted to have as much options as possible. Still have plenty to fiddle and tune. Set pretty low with high damping at the moment.

Did you remove the box chassis part underneath the seat and welded new seat rails to have a lower seating position?

We considered doing that but we actually laser cut and folded 3mm steel brackets that fix to the original fixing locations, which then have 5mm Aluminium seat brackets bolted to them. Probably not the lightest option, but don't think I had easy access to a welder when we made those. I'm 6'2" and fit plenty low as it is now with the boxes still in.
