The turning around between the second and third movement showed how easy Alan was. Definitely a one-breath performance; a birth of "cool" performance. It has to be released on CD!

Tom Dengler tends to be something of too carping a critic, but he does allow that Alan Gilbert is a very great conductor. One does not get to the Elbphilharmonie without being exactly that! As others have commented in this corner, I too have not yet been to the Elbphilharmonie (Wiesbaden is not exactly "um die Ecke"!), but this recording/performance does indeed display a very presentable acoustical quality, and I still hope to personally witness it someday. Dengler also said that Gilbert could use "charisma lessons"; I could name a very big name (but will not) heavily associated with "charisma," and I for one do not agree. One is walking on very thin ice with something like that...and it is the MUSIC and it's performance and interpretation that ultimately count most. This Brahms #3 is anyway an exemplary achievement. I thank NDR again. JAT

"Concert recording from February 28, 2020." So, this was right before the pandemic. I hear the 4th movement telling, "That's it for now, folks. See you again. Take care."
This symphony always reminds me "Do you like Brahms?" movie, which I saw fifty-some years ago. I don't remember anything except for the 3rd movement leaking out from the hall when the boy follows (or, leads?) the girl on a beautiful staircase. I want to see the movie again.

GILBERT IS A NEW YORK BOY AND A VERY GREAT CONDUCTOR. HE HAS BEEN GIVEN THE NEW YORK HEAVE HO AND HE'LL PROBABLY GET THE SAME FROM HAMBURG. HE NEEDS CHARISMA LESSONS (???).

You gotta be kidding me. The sound is fantastic. These engineers do a great job. I grew up watching PBS broadcasts of NYP. No way they can beat the Hamburg sound engineers. I'm grateful there's no paywall for these broadcasts. NYC the center of the universe, I know..how trite Tom.
