This was the only nomination Zelda was guaranteed to win. This year was simply too competitive. GOTY was basically Baldur’s Gate 3’s to lose, and Tears of the Kingdom was my personal GOTY. Congrats to Larian Studios

The game is not innovative. These mechanics have been done by previous games before (GMod, Nuts and Bolts)
What is great about TotK is that these mechanics are integrated seamlessly on an action-adventure game on an open world with three layers, with a story, characters, quests, puzzles. This idea could be inspirational.

Eiji Aonuma walking up there in his Champions Tunic explaining his joy for TOTK getting best adventure is peak. To Eiji, this was my GOTY! I even loved the return of Molgera with Colgera and Marbled Gohma which is again another variant of Gohma. The new possibilities with Link's arm and the way how Nintendo kind of left the game unfinished (in a good way) so you can build certain contraptions and let it roll by your own creativity was peak. People who say this is BOTW DLC and Nuts and Bolts Zelda edition, did not play this game yet.

But as a huge Zelda fan, I did play this game. Twice.
It’s honestly pretty mid and laggy as hell when building shit. The presentation is wonderful and the music is pretty good in some areas but it’s quite literally an expansion to BOTW. It’s not the worst thing of all time but it’s absolutely not as great as people make it out to be. But that’s to be expected from a game that was originally “DLC”.

Honestly the only other award it should've won was soundtrack bc those composers deserve a raise. Zelda's music is basically one of the greatest strengths of the series. Especially since the story was particularly lacking in TotK which definitely caused me to despise it. BotW was the game that had a massive impact on the gaming industry, not TotK. And that's for a good reason. TotK is better in general but it's not as iconic as its predecessor and I could never in my life say that I enjoyed playing the game nearly as much as how I was enjoying making up theories for it and watching the trailers and leaks for me personally.

I was nervous when Doug Bowser accepted Mario Wonder’s award that the dev teams weren’t going to make it, but the Zelda team at least made it to accept their award.

I find it funny how most Zelda related comments are well behaved, showing their sadness but respect for Baldurs Gate 3.
While most BG3 comments are something like "Play BG3 and you know what a good game is." or "Totk is a 70$ DLC".

It's pretty funny to see people throw their salt of rage just because Tears of the Kingdom is a Breath of the Wild recycled DLC but are pretty blind to not even be able to notice that it's not the first time that Nintendo recycle their game without it bother anyone from the Nintendo community as Nintendo do recycled stuff since the NES era with Super Mario Bros The Lost Level who have the same gameplay like Super Mario Bros NES with few new stuff in it just like Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Wii with same gameplay but new stuff from the first Super Mario Galaxy despite no one complaint about it.
Same about Kirby Triple Deluxe, Kirby Planet Robobot and Kirby Star Allies who are too much similar to Kirby Return to Dreamland from the Wii due to the gameplay. I don't even forget Fire Emblem about most of the characters who have a Marth copy-paste design when we see in Smash Ultimate that the Fire Emblem roster is mainly blue hair, cape and sword anime characters based on Marth design, without forget somes Pokemon game who recycle somes stuff from a previous game to the next one with somes new stuff.
And by add to the fact that it's not the first time that the Zelda serie reuse the same gameplay and engine from a previous Zelda game like Majora's Mask from Ocarina of Time with new stuff and modified gameplay on the N64 and Spirit Tracks very similar with same gameplay from Phantom Hourglass from DS but with new stuff and modified gameplay like use a train instead boat for travel.
So, for complaint like a cry baby because it's so shocking to see Tears of the Kingdom do recycled stuff on Breath of the Wild, either people are just a troll who don't like to see the game be popular among the Zelda fan and be choosen for the Game Award instead it's something else, either people are new for play Nintendo game but if they just complaint because Nintendo recycle stuff in all their game, then, Nintendo is definitively not for them since others people don't complaint about Nintendo recycle stuff because it would be a while I would see people complaint about how Splatoon 3 is a Splatoon 2 recyled DLC as a Splatoon 3.0 paying update or Star Fox Zero be a recycled DLC for Star Fox 64 but I don't see anyone complaint about it except troll who don't play Nintendo games for really claim their own opinion is better than anyone opinion.
I've seen people shit on BG3 plenty here too. However there's definitely not as much heat as with Spider-Man 2 fans.

As much as I wanted this to win Game of the Year, Best Action/Adventure is enough.
I'm glad TotK didn't go home empty-handed this year. The sheer quantity of amazing games in 2023 was unbelievable and to win even one award in an important category like action/adventure just highlights the talent of the Zelda team to one-up a genre defining game like BotW. Deserved.

TOTK is not just Game of the Year in my book, it is one of if not the best video games of all time! I am not currently able to explain how deeply fun and enjoyable this game experience has been. Link and various characters, the plot, scope, capabilities, music, environments, challenging enemies, and the list goes on! I am so grateful to those who helped make it possible to have the good things in the game that made for such a deeply positive experience and impact on my life (you did an Amazing job and I hope you always remember that). THANKS SO MUCH for the Powerfully Amazing BOTW and TOTK!
I couldn’t agree more. A few months ago I decided to dust off my old Wii U and buy BOTW… which blew my mind. So after I completed it I bought a Switch & TOTK… which completely blew my mind. The game is incredible beyond all belief. I just can’t imagine how it could be topped. Stunning work, amazing. 💯 winner for me.
@@79bullI had a similar experience. I got a switch last year to play some other games. Then I heard that there was a game that everyone agreed was so good that was getting a sequel this year. So I bought BotW and it blew my mind. By the time I finished, TotK was already out. So I bought that and it too blew my mind. Both amazing games! But I had (have, cuz I’m STILL playing it) more fun with TotK!

The TGA REALLY needs to step up their game. The moment TotK won this award, I was 1000000% sure that they WOULDN'T win Game of the Year.
Why? Well, because almost all other "best X GENRE" awards didn't have an on-stage presentation. Meaning that they made this one so Aonuma could get up stage and have a moment in the spotlight, given that he wouldn't be able to do so at any other point (and to not make the trip from Japan to LA worthless).

It’s by far the best action adventure game of the year. And the combat is super fun with all the fused weapons, arrows and physics combat.
Action in TOTK is not just swish swish slash. You’re underselling it probably because you don’t take advantage of those systems as much as you could.
I'm honestly dissapointed. Hi-Fi Rush is from an Action Game Perspective more fun imo.
This was shameful. Aonuma came all the way from Japan to accept a possible award, and was given barely 30 secs to deliver it with a translator before being rushed off stage... this was unacceptable all around unless you are Kojima.

I understand Game of the Year was a tough fight, but TotK should also have won Best Direction in my opinion, with the way it reinvented itself and the genre with mechanics like the ultrahand and fuse alongside the fact they allowed a delay of a whole year just to polish the game.

Well deserved. I think Tears of the Kingdom should have won Best Game Direction too. I was surprised Alan Wake 2 dominated so much, considering I’d never heard of the game before the Awards. But I can understand it winning best Art Direction and Best Narrative. Baldur’s Gate 3 definitely deserved best RPG and no one but Neil Newbon was going to win best (voice) Performance. I’m sad Tears of the Kingdom didn’t win GOTY, but it had its win with BOTW so Bauldr’s Gate 3 was always going to sweep it.
And best musical score. Zelda music is just fantastic always

It's unfortunate but, personally, I think BoTW and ToTK had some of the most forgettable music scores in the entire Zelda series, a franchise known for its incredible music. This is my goty. I'm not really sad that it lost BG3. I've never played BG3 but base on the hype, it's more than deserving unlike The Last of Us part 2 that is very divided.

All respect to Baldur’s Gate, but I truly believe TOTK should’ve won GOTY. Its a stellar game, its pretty much perfect. I still cannot believe it didn’t win best soundtrack, that is criminal. But I’m at least glad it won best action/adventure game, because it was a guaranteed win.
it shouldn't win. Baldurs gate 3 is like god tier. while totk is a game for kids. Only endured BOTW around 5 hours, weapon durability, childish irritating sound effects, no story, sub 720p resolution with dynamic resolution dropping to 540p is not GOTY. Breath of the Wild won GOTY in 2017. Tears of the Kingdom improved on it in every way and was far more innovative, but didn’t win.

I have no support or admiration for BG3 (and it doesn’t surprise me that it won the most awards besides GotY), but thank goodness they gave Tears of the Kingdom at least one award. It’s my GotY (and my second favorite game of all time to Super Mario Odyssey; the Best Family Game winner from 2017) and the team at Nintendo deserved said award!

This to me is my personal GOTY. But congrats to Baldur's Gate 3, it was well deserved, 2023 was very competitive, it could've been anyone's year.

Zelda TOTK, a game only available on 1 console (an underpowered and aging one at that), QUADRUPLED BG3’s week 1 sales in just 3 days. BG3 is a game that is playable on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. It’s not even a contest. There are people that literally had to buy a new console just to play Zelda lol.
BG3 has sold more than TOTK now, and that number will continue to rise for a few years due to it’s dominance in it’s genre. The hype for TOTK fell off a long time ago, it’s already a game people have forgotten about.
@@bakad5458 wrong. As of right now, TOTK has sold more than 3 million more copies than BG3, using a singular and increasingly outdated platform to drive those sales. BG3 is available to play on virtually every OTHER modern system, and still can’t catch up to TOTK. Can you even imagine if it were availble on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Steam?
@@vaughnjohnson5484 BG3 is at 22m right now while TOTK is at 19m. Also it being a nintendo exclusive is what boosts the sales, because the switch barely has any good games lol.
Currently ToTK has over 25m copies sold...

I think the developers not doing any DLC for the game that people wanted more of was the downfall of it not reaching GOTY.

I’m glad TotK at least won something because it’s really an amazing game, and it’s not its fault that Baldur’s Gate 3 came in and was absolutely incredible. Hell it even surprised me with how good it was, when I went into BG3 not expecting it to be so good.
What is so good about that game that can be considered better than zelda totk, its the same turn based game that we have seen and played many times before with a little improvement if we compare those 2 games bg3 will end up being limited to what zelda totk can do
Anyone who's played Div 2 would of told you BG3 was going to be phenomenal
@@truthtruth9056 you need to play BG3 to understand how deep it is. It has a freedom of how the game lets you do things that is on the same level as totk's, even if expressed differently. They are both amazing but BG3 is the goty for me.
@@truthtruth9056Whats so special about zelda totk? They barely made any changes from the first game, it wasn’t revolutionary at all. BG3 literally raised the bar for the genre, Zelda totk did not.
