    I recommend keeping a garden journal to keep track of when you plant, along with successes & failures. I have hosted a plant exchange with friends which was fun.

      Yes! I started doing this it’s so helpful especially to remind me of when to fertilize so i don’t overdo it. I would love to do a plant exchange or just a little meet up with friends who garden!

    LOVE! Thank you so much for your hard work in creating this video! I've been procrastinating getting back to my garden! I'm a beginner myself. Now that it's starting to cool off here in AZ, I've been trying to get motivated again! This has helped me so much! I also save kitchen scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc and mix into the soil. Instead of waiting for them to break down, I put them in a blender (designated for this purpose) and add water and pulverize and add to soil.

      aw thanks so much!! I love AZ :) Definitely get back to it! it’s so much fun and super rewarding even to just see a little bit of growth. That’s a great idea to grind up all your eggshells! I know they take literally forever to breakdown

    This really is the perfect channel for me. My husband and I have had a "kitchen" garden for over 25 years now. We mainly grow tomatoes (also cherry tomatoes), peppers, squash(we love spaghetti squash), zucchini and other veggies we love to eat. Our goal is to make enough marinara sauce to last us a year. We simmer it on the stove all day, and store it in the freezer. Since hurricane Helene caused us to lose everything, next year we will definitely be canning a lot of things. My husband works very hard on creating a rich compost, and saves egg shells and coffee grounds to add at different times of the year. We are trying to grow some late tomatoes (since we live in a warm climate), to try and make more sauce. One thing I want to suggest is to visit local farmers' markets. Ours is every Tuesday afternoon, and we love to support local farms by purchasing from them!!

      I love farmers markets! I’m so sorry about the helene damage it’s so tragic. I eventually want to have enough to harvest to start preserving! It’s such a therapeutic hobby :)

      @@livingwithlk I think we're going to try and replace our tomatoes from the farmer's market so we can replace what we lost! I had a bad experience canning years ago, and I need to get over it!

    Great video with lots of good information. Your potatoes look wonderful! You are on your way to being a Master Gardener! Your recommendations for building up the soil were helpful. I love homegrown potatoes. For over 40 years my husband planted a huge vegetable garden and we put up countless jars of tomatoes, tomatillos, made salsa verde and also froze beans, cabbage, etc. I helped with the weeding, canning, and freezing. Now he can't really garden because of health issues and I really missed it so I have started to "take over" with a much smaller, more manageable garden. My husband though is my consultant and still does some tilling! We're on the east coast in Maryland and use a planting chart for MD. But we have a major deer problem so had to install an 8 ft fence around the vegetable garden. I'm in my 70's so not as strong as I used to be. But I manage to plant some tomatoes, lettuce, beans, chard, zucchini, sometimes a few eggplants, basil. Next year I am going to plant broccoli. Nowadays I buy plants from our local nursery. We used to start seeds. What I like to do is make ratatouille with the garden vegetables in the summer and freeze it. There's nothing like fresh vegetables! Thanks for your inspiring videos! 🥬🥦🍅🥔

      Thanks so much! I really struggled with tomatillos this year.. they're so fussy. I’m so glad you are getting back to gardening and making it work for you! That sounds amazing!

    So we just relocated from SoCal to the Nashville area. My Husband and I decided to enlarge our front flower bed, OMG I miss my sandy soil! I thought we were going to die trying to dig in that clay! lol Next Spring we will figure it out!! I did however see a video where a lady cut up a tomato and threw it in dirt! lol so I decided to do that in a dirt filled pot on our back patio. It got HUGE!!!! Literally was insane lol THEN we got the Wooly Aphids… sigh.. it’s a whole new learning curve for me!!!

    • @livingwithlk
      @livingwithlk  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gardening is definitely a learning curve! There’s so many elements that can affect plants. I have seen clay soil get better with compost layered on top and then a bunch of woody matter layered on top of that for about 6 months to a year. It really breaks it down and makes it more fertile!

    • @Cherieanne62
      @Cherieanne62 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@livingwithlk that’s exactly what I did!! I just loaded the top soil on and planted in that! Then added more as the rain washed it away! lol another learning experience!!!

    So much good info! I don't have enough sun for a vegetable garden, but many of these tips would help my decorative plants. There are a couple things I've done as an inexperienced gardener...one is to put new plants in a container I can move. If it doesn't thrive, I move it to a spot with more or less sun until I find where it's happy. The other is to use Soil Diva for amendment. It's meant for growing food, but works for any plant, and my small, sad rhododendron nearly doubled in size and is thriving after using it for a bit.

    • @livingwithlk
      @livingwithlk  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Love it yes! Moving plants for sun and shade in containers is such a good hack. There are a lot of low light lettuces and winter veggies and edible flowers like nasturtiums that don’t require a lot of sun!

    Yet another great video! Thank you! I have been wanting to grow a small pumpkin patch for my granddaughters and neighborhood kids. I need to come up with a plan for prepping the soil, etc and knowing when to sow the seeds. I haven’t grown vegetables in many years but have plenty of other garden plants. I have a bit of a green thumb. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have a lot of success but don’t necessarily know what I’m doing.😂 You are so inspirational. I just love your enthusiasm for doing new things. You have motivated me to make a plan. I want to check out that Skill Share thing too. ❤

    Hi. New to your channel. I enjoyed and learned a lot from your beginner gardening video. I am a female retired single gardener. I don't need a big garden even though I do have the space. I am 68 years old, and so it's hard to do a lot of weeding and bending over and kneeling. I am interested in more gardening tips. My location is in Texas. Summers are brutal. Should I plant in mostly shady areas? I like the grow bags and container ideas. I could put them on a cart so they could be moved. Any ideas would be helpful. I don't mind a young chic sharing her tips and tricks with an older hen. Lol.

    • @livingwithlk
      @livingwithlk  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi and welcome! Yes that’s why container gardening is so helpful because you can just move around based on the weather :) I also recommend shade cloths! Especially when it’s super hot and sunny in the summer. 50% has worked great for me in helping my plants not totally burn to a crisp :) Planting in shady areas is hard as certain plants need a certain amount of sun per day.. so I’ll definitely include more info on what I learned about this in my next part!

    Thank you, LK! I loved this gardening video! I came to gardening late, so I am relatively new to the satisfaction & wonder of low-key gardening. I have had great success with perennials (especially roses) but have failed miserably with vegetables! I hope to amend that next year. I covet your tomatoes! 🍅

    Good advice. I am in zone 4 (trending to zone 5 with climate change). We have a relatively short growing season and my yard gets little sun so gardening is a bit frustrating.

    • @livingwithlk
      @livingwithlk  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel you! Most of my yard gets shaded in the winter months so I’ve had to find a few ways to keep plants alive. I think having grow bags or movable pots is super helpful because you can just move your plants into the sun as it moves through the year. I also added one of those vertical gardens from dollar tree to my porch that gets sun most of the day so some winter lettuces did well that way!
