    Best informative videos - as always!
    Any chance you can do a video on how to solve deceleration surges (knocking sounds) for the 2017 KTM? :)
    Started 20 hours ago for my bike and I can't find the cause for this annoying feeling and sound.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fabio at PowerCDI has a very good write up about deceleration surges (pipe bang) here:
      www.powercdi.com/manual/combustion/pipe_bangs/en.html
      If it suddenly started something must have changed. Check your airfilter is clean, jetting is clean (not to rich, or lean), idle is adjusted correctly and exhaust is not leaking at the manifold.

      After how many hours did you rebuild the bottom end? Was there a specific issue with the bottom end?

      @desmonchild 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have bought the bike with 380H from a friend .In 410H since there wasn't a previous rebuild I decided to make a top/bottom rebuild. There wasn't anything wrong with the cylinder(some minor scratches) or the crank(some play but tolerable) .
      I have fitted the B piston,the oil mix is 2%.

  • @ptft4
    @ptft4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mark, when you change piston on your 300 tpi, do you go for minimum piston to cylinder clearance?
    My 2022 300 tpi have never had issues with the airfilter but are close to the service limit at 10 hundreds already after 42 hrs of normal enduro riding so it must have been close to max tolerance already from the factory (6.6 to 8.8 hundreds)

  • @stone4858

    My friend has a 300 exc from 2005 and just changed the piston once 10 years ago, still working fine 🤣

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not sure if you're joking, but my recommendation would be to change the piston and rings every 100~200H on KTM 250/300 2-strokes, depending on how the bike is ridden. Knowing how many years old the bike is, or how many years since the last overhaul is not important. You need to know how many hours the bike has been ridden. If the bike doesn't have an hour meter I'd recommend fitting one as it makes determining service intervals easy. For casual trail riding on a 300, mostly low RPM, overhauling the top end every 150~200H is probably fine. If you choose to run pistons significantly longer you risk excessive wear on the cylinder due to increased piston rock, reduced performance and an elevated risk of catastrophic piston failure (piston skirt may crack and break off), which may damage the head, cylinder, and crankshaft and be expensive and time consuming to repair. A 2-stroke top end overhaul kit is relatively inexpensive (about $200) and IMO cheap insurance to help avoid costly failure and issues while out riding.

      @@TokyoOffroad lol no I'm not joking 😂 he rides his bike like crazy and only change the piston ones. He even went 3 times to Erzberg with this bike and made it with the top 300 riders. That sad I'm not saying I want change my piston every 200hrs but I'm not changing the cylinder that's for sure !

  • @tkrey23

    Interesting you don't say which piston size you have been or will be running. Given your measurements it looks like you'll be putting a size B piston in now and good to go!

    Do you have any starter system troubleshooting videos? I have a 2012 Husaberg Te250 with the poor starter design. I have upgraded to the stronger starter and rebushed all of the starter components. Starter works jumpered out. Looking to test out the other components in the system. Thanks, you have great content!

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have any starter issue related videos yet. I do have some experience though.
      "Starter works jumpered out"- Do you mean if you connect the starter to an external 12V source it works? Or do you mean if you take the starter out the bike and connect it to the battery it works?
      If your starter motor spins with no load, but doesn't when it's in the bike i would first check the battery voltage and charge the battery if it's low, or replace the battery if it's old and doesn't hold charge. Also check the battery ground cable connections. The ground cable terminals can easily become corroded and create high resistance which may stop, or slow the starter motor turning. Use a wire brush to clean any corrosion off the terminals. The frame/battery cable terminal connection seems particularly susceptible to corrosion. I smear a small amount of grease on the connections to help prevent corrosion. The next thing to check is the starter solenoid. Does it click when you press the starter button? If so use a volt meter and measure the voltage at the starter motor when the starter button is pressed. If you don't see any voltage at the starter motor it would suggest that the solenoid is broken, or fuse blown.

    • @wigidy12
      @wigidy12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TokyoOffroad thanks for the reply. The battery is strong, around 13.5. The starter works in the bike if I run a a jumper from the positive post to the post on the starter motor. The solenoid is not clicking when I hit the button. I removed the solenoid, found the 2 prongs from the plug that had the highest ohm reading(the magnet), applied ground and positive to said prongs, and the solenoid directed power through to the right place. The fuse is good as well. I think it is a solenoid, but wasn't sure how to troubleshoot the start button. Didn't want to go order parts until I knew, and none of my other bikes have longer parts to test out. Thanks again for all of the help!

    How do you find out whats the correct angle of the bore meassurement against the cylinder walls, I can see how much the indicator of the scale rotates up&down because of leaning the bore meassurement.I guess you have to note the closest possible value to zero which is 66,4mm.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You initially rock the gauge to and fro to center it in the bore, like I show in the video, then start looking at the dial indicator carefully and note the minimum reading each time you rock it. In the video it read a minimum of +10um, so the measurement is 66.400mm + 10um = 66.410mm

    Good video, watch all your videos, I have a question that I can t seem to find a answer , KTM owner complain of a rattle from their engines and they believe it comes from the powervalve, have you had this problem or herd it or fixed it before, I just bought a 2018 300xc so just trying trying to learn about them, and hoping I made a good choice going with KTM. I've always been a Honda guy and have had really good luck, with a few exception of the 2005 cr 250 that I wasn't wasn't to fond of. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I haven't noticed any power valve rattles on my bikes. It's always good to listen to how your engine sounds while riding and take note when something changes. But if your bike is running nicely now I wouldn't worry about it...

  • @barkeep25
    @barkeep25 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you're just doing the same size cylinders only, could you get away with just using a inside diameter standard to set it to 50mm or 2" or whateverand not buy a micrometer? I have a cheap micrometer already but I feel it would knock gauge out of true.

  • @michalkunst440
    @michalkunst440 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    6:16 you're saying: by rocking it you find centre or maximum of bore dimension.Actually you're looking for "minimum" that is closest to zero. Thats why it was bit confusing to me.

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a two step process. The initial rocking aligns the bore gauge into the center of the bore, then subsequent rocking you start to perform the measurement and take note of the minimum reading.

    Regarding cold starts, is it really necessary to maintain rpms slightly more than idle?
    Why not leave it at idle until the motor reach working temps?
    Thanks for the videos btw.

    • @TokyoOffroad

    What is reason bike smoke problem

    • @TokyoOffroad
      @TokyoOffroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excessive smoke typically indicates the bike is running rich. Also some 2-stroke oils smoke more than others, so if your jetting is good and the bike is not running rich you might consider using a different oil.
