This video was in a Daily Hive article that was in my Google News feed. In my early 20's I did service work in many of these hotels, that was 20 years ago now. The conditions then were just as bad as they are now only there was no social media to expose it. Thanks for posting this.
I used to live right near that building. So many crazy memorie of the DTES. I got really lucky and found a studio at English bay that I can actually afford. Vancouver is the greatest.
Thanks for documenting this. Yes this isn't the absolute worst SRO footage I've seen, but that's such a low bar to judge it by. It's insane that this sad place is $950. So almost half of a minimum wage salary gets you this squalor?? Not to mention the absolute chaos of walking to and from that building.
I am amazed everything has not been wrecked and that the toilets and showers were clean. As far as Hastings street is concerned, that alone constitutes a miracle! This particular building must be equipped with some form of junkie repellent? On the other hand, to pay $950 for such a crummy dump is insane. Maybe in a sane world a $150 would be more than fair? What blows me away though is that it would cost one half of a minimum wage salary to rent such a shit hole. In essence, this SROs is nothing more than a high priced slum - disgusting.
i know this is an old video but i have that exact same rice cooker and i use it almost daily, its great for cooking noodles like macaroni for mac and cheese (ive tried it with KD but the noodles are too startchy) and pro tip for milk, buy instant milk powder rather than just milk, it lasts alot longer and all you need is to add water :) nice video
If you actually only had one bed, it would be okay if not for the bed bugs, and rats in hallways. It could have used a good wipe down on the surfaces and floor. All you would need is a bucket, a good cleanser, and water access using the laundry room sink. How can you live in something you don't keep clean? Oh, and it's better than living on the street. At least temporarily.
Honestly, I have seen way worse SRO in Vancouver. Way worse, and once you accept housing, you are off the chart, just to get off the street. This housing is actually in the top ten.
Looks perfectly fine to me so long as the heat and hot water work ...just keep it clean. Amazing 90 year old light switch; They don't make them quite so durable any more!
@@PrincessZoey I need that money to move into the effin brandiz or 139 cordova but will pray for your beer. Im at the acme/sally anne shelter next door to brandiz. I used to prefer being homeless to slum sros but am losing too many bikes and laptops so am going to suck it up.
Thanks for the video… that’s a lot of $$ for that accommodation…. Did you move there as a student or were you just needing something inexpensive…. Just curious … thx 😌
In the future if at one of these places, you have to move bed away from wall, and put bed bug traps (search for youtube video) on all 4 legs of bed or else. At 380 main is a newish SRO with a balcony and own bathroom, about $850/m or income based if on welfare. You could just live with ubc students in Kits with your own room for half the price of Brandiz and no rats.
Yeah didn’t have any BBS this time due to our vigilance and experience living in other rooms. Unfortunately this room was too small to move the beds away from the wall. We had a few bed bug traps but didn’t have any signs in them of any eggs etc
I hope you had some good shower shoes. Getting dressed before you get out. Makes perfect sense. That public toilet situation. That concerns me a lot. I hope you had some toilet bowl cleaner. Along some disinfect spray or disposable wipes. Was it clean regularly by staff? Or did the entire floor mutually agree on a 'clean it best way you can' type of deal? Where everybody who had jack all to do during the week. Somebody took whatever cleaning stuff they had extra and scrub it out? If each person did it whenever they had free time and the shower was not occupied. It should be clean enough.
landlady hired people under the table to clean washrooms daily. That is a plus. Flip flops were definitely needed to use the shower!!! this is a private SRO. it was clean enough but then there’s rats in the walls in a hundred year old building and cockroaches under the floor boards it’s hard to maintain a sense of cleanliness.
@@PrincessZoey If she hired you to 'tidy' up a bit in the building. To shave some rent off. A lot small property owners to it. Some hire skilled people to minor repairs, clean, etc. Normally someone in the building. Reducing their rent a bit. In some cases cutting it by half or two thirds.

Ya can't afford rat traps but can afford beer. The only reason rats come to your home is open food lying around. Perhaps make your bed and clean would help. The result of Vancouver run by conservative NPA city councillors the past 4 years. Majority of those who were making decisions in city hall belonged to the NPA party, which is run by far right conservative executives. They weren’t focus on any type of below market housing or getting affordable housing built, they were only interested in approving zoning for luxury developers in exchange for millions of dollars in amenities for rich neighbourhoods. Last year alone they brought in $420M from zoning deals with luxury developers. And the city spent $5B on social services where the majority went towards paying staff and giving them bonuses and benefits rather than getting housing built. Also the result of organizations like OPS putting all their nasty drug enabling facilities in the same vicinity of the SROs and homeless shelters causing the SROs to be overrun by drug addicts and dealers. This is what happens when “advocates” advocate for enabling drug addicts to take over streets with tents and advocate for them to be given housing without having to get into rehab and off drugs first. Also the result of rich snobs in other neighbourhoods petitioning against supportive housing being built in “their” neighbourhoods, such as the petition to stop supportive housing from being built by the next Arbutus skytrain station and in Kitsilano.
Hm that's interesting considering the past 4 years the council was split between npa and candidates from3 other parties that all lean left. And then there was the mayor who was a previous ndp mp, so I would say catagorizing as a majority conservative council is false.
@@frankieandrews9431 funny how people come up with their own "facts" and that it's always from folks that believe liberals will help anyone but themselves.

It's absolutely a disgrace that anyone would have to pay $950 a month for such abominable accommodation. Such places shouldn't even be allowed.
