    Korean cuisine and cooking methods as a whole are vastly underrated in the food world. More people need to be made aware they exist!

      Well, in New York they out-number French restaurants now in haute cuisine scene, 7 French to 9 Korean out of 45 total. I think these are Michelin starred ones . This happened VERY recently though. And many of it is fusion to accommodate New Yorker's taste, which aren't quite ready for full-on Korean foods, they think.
      Full-on authentic Koreans ones are beginning to pop up as well, at least one out of the 9 is one. This is according to an article I read. I've never lived in NY City. Here in L.A. area, authentic Korean restaurants are fairly common including straight Korean franchises. But they aren't common as Chinese or Mexican, or even Italian, for sure. Maybe like Thai or Vietnamese, but slightly less still. All the Vietnamese I know love to eat Korean lol.

      @@jacobh9487 There are definitely more than 9 Korean restaurants in NYC. I know of at least two that have earned Michelin stars. There are also different types of Korean restaurants depending on what their specialty is. Koreatown in NYC is very small. Some of the Korean restaurants would be in Astoria.

      You're actually 100% correct. It's a misconception that Korean food is all meat and Korean bbq. Korean cuisine is very vegetable forward. We love variety and many different flavour combinations. Even where there is meat in a meal it is often not the star, or at least always balanced with vegetables and banchan.

      indeed, I counted once how many types of namul, aka cooked and seasoned vegetable, I grew up eating and it was around 30~35 different types. When I did some research about namul, across the nation there are easily more than100 different types of namul eaten by people. In addition, Koreans love fresh raw vegetable like ssam, fermented or pickled vegetables as well as sea plants. As far as vegetable or sea plant dishes go, it is countless.

    I went to South Korea three times for work. The food was absolutely phenomenal!!! I had my local co-worker buddies guiding me and on the first trip they thought they had to take me to American places but I said Hell No!!! Bring me to your local faves!!! They were taking me to the craziest and best local food places every day and I loved it every time :)

    One thing I always tell people who try Korean food for first time or with little experience.
    DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE LOOK AND SMELL!
    Korean food really needs to be known to more people. Their food is on top of the level and I mean it.

      You can't be 2nd generation and an immigrant at the same time. If you immigrated to the US you're 1st generation. If you were born in the US, you're 2nd generation, unless somehow you were born in the US and your parents never became citizens, then you'd be 1st generation.

      The Korea you were in is a different place than it is now. It was developing then. Now it has in many regards surpassed the us from a street level and consumer tech stand point. It's really like living in the future there. But there are lots of downsides to their lifestyle especially for kids.

    18:33 The noodle dish is “kalguksu”. The name name of the place is Myeongdong Gyoza - “gyoza” like the fried dumpling - but they’re famous for their noodles and the only dumplings they serve are steamed. But a lot of locals just refer to it as Myeondong Kalguksu. I used to go to this place at least once a month the 7 years I lived there. The first time I tried it was on my first date with my wife.

    As someone who lived in SK for 6 months. It’s been a couple years since and it’s killing me to watch all the food that I’ve missed! My top favorites I would have added if you had time: Dakgalbi & gamjatang. Loved this video!

    • @Stan_sprinkle
      @Stan_sprinkle 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Gamjatang was the first dinner I had in my first trip to Seoul. I ended up moving there and living there for 7 years but somehow only had gamjatang one other time Not sure why. But yeah I miss the food in general, especially the steady supply of my mother in law’s banchan

  • @Stan_sprinkle
    @Stan_sprinkle 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    19:31 the kimchi at myeondong gyoza is a specific variant that has a shit ton of garlic and it’s served fresh. Like it’s spicy because of chili powder, but almost more so because of the raw garlic flavor. It goes really well with the noodles and dumplings there, but it’s not the kind of kimchi you want with every meal.

    I have been in Korea for a few years, and as you can see, people are not as lively as they used to be and prices are very high. However, if you go to the Jeolla region other than Seoul, it will be different. Busan and Gyeongju were good, but Jeonju, Gwangju, and Mokpo were much better. Please visit south. It was also nice to enjoy the sheep ranch and Korean beef in Gangwon-do and see the east coast. I wish you nothing but blessings.

    Glad you guys enjoyed Seoul, my hometown where mom & pop shops are everywhere, churning out specialties. You seem to have hit the highlights of Korean cooking. As for mung bean potato latkes…we do have mung bean pancakes that contain grated potatoes but would be interesting to see a Sam version. Delicious w a soy/vinegar dip

    Alrighty boys a little secret here... all the foreigners from the west loved Korean toast (toasted white bread with veggies and ham and egg). You can get them from street vendors or at Isaac Toast. There you go. Enjoy!
