Sample Wedding Ceremony Readings (And What To Do Instead!)

  • You’re a wedding officiant or a couple looking for wedding readings for your upcoming ceremony. And you just want this part to be easy. Basically, you just want to find a verse or a poem or a quote here on the Internet, think “Oh that’s nice” about it, and copy and paste it into your ceremony.
    I’m going to save you the trouble: skip the sample wedding reading.
    That’s right: don’t include a sample reading. Cut it. Leave it out. Your wedding ceremony - whether you’re a couple or an officiant - doesn’t benefit from a sample wedding reading.
    Now before you bring out the pitchforks and torches or reach through your screen to strangle me about all the touching wedding readings you’ve seen, let me say this: I’m not necessarily telling you to ditch readings altogether. (More on that in the video.) I’m telling you not to use a sample reading. I’m telling you to stop looking. The operative word here is "sample."
    Here’s why I think sample wedding readings for ceremonies are bad - and why you need to ditch the sample reading in your wedding ceremony - for something far better.

    Love the idea of adding personal and unique reading. The example of the book ow the places we will go is , such a great price to personalize the ceremony. Thanks

    Thanks Mark! This is so refreshing as opposed to doing same-O Same-O!!! I know with some people it will probably be short and sweet because they are so intimidated by saying much of anything out loud in public. But to me that's OK so long as it comes from the heart! I think giving them the choice in this and it not being canned is so awesome!!! Thanks again from a new-be!!! :-)

    I can imagine the weddings you officiate are memorable! Listening to this has given me confidence to go with my gut and compose a funny, personal poem about my friend and her husband to be! I'm so nervous, as I don't do public speaking.....can you recommend anything to keep the nerves at bay?
    My friend's think I'm funny, so the pressure is on to be funny! But it's not my day, so I want it to be about them and their story.

    I've been to weddings with both. I'm officiating a wedding in two days and no reading I could find seemed to flow well. It was like you said, they don't seem very personal. So I haven't added one in. I've got the story of the couple in relation to me (because I know them) and some simple words of advice and talk about love and the meaning of the day, but no reading. I asked them now if they have anything personal but I think it'll be pretty good without :) I've seen some great weddings on TH-cam without readings.

    my aunt wants me to pick a reading for her wedding, i genuinely am lost on what to tell her. hence why i’m on youtube looking it up (edit: i’m reading at the wedding she isn’t just outsourcing an important part to me because she couldn’t be bothered)

    How long should a wedding be? How long should be officiating speak?

      Hey there - thanks for watching and for your question! I tell every couple’s love story and offer a brief reflection on what makes today significant. Friends and family officiants can also add a reflection on what they love about the couple personally. So I would say minimum 5 minutes but not going over about 13 minutes due to attention span restraints. :-)

    Ok Im confused, you just said it's all about the couple they asked you for something and you said no? and if they want mention of God included in the script would you not read a passage from the bible?

    • @unboringwedding
      @unboringwedding  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha - thanks! I’d say there’s a difference between refusing to add something they want to their ceremony and declining something they ask you to do so you get an even better result. :-) If they want to add something to the ceremony, of course you say yes. It’s a question of how it gets there and what you end up saying in the ceremony. So yes, the same is for a scripture reading. I would encourage them not to add a scripture reading for the sake of adding a scripture reading. I would ask them to find a passage that’s meaningful to them so that there is nothing in the ceremony that is simply there for the sake of having it there. Thanks for asking that clarifying question!

      @@unboringwedding I fall on the non religious side of things so if asked to I would tell them to choose the reading like you were saying
