I am distrustful of Berk River and DLT production control. Occasionally, knives were not built more than a year after the pre-order, and production orders are not on a first-come, first-served basis. It is completely unknown what they prioritize in production. It looks beautiful in terms of price, but the quality is not very good. If you care about the sharpness, re-sharpening is indispensable.
I am proud to say I just got a JX5 in October and I absolutely love it I even fell asleep with it , like a kid on Christmas . Now I will save up for either a JX4 BushBat or the awesome JX2 JessMuk ! It will take me a while to save for them , but it is totally worth it .
The JX2 is a fantastic knife. I never leave home without it!

I ordered a BK62 Kephart the other day (should arrive today) instead of the BR Kephart in CPM3V. The only reason was for the original design. Im getting the BRK with the 4.25 blade next. Hard to beat their convex edge.I going to try the BK62 with its factory edge. Then im going to convex the edge with Japanese water stones. Will give an update to this post
Same here actually! Did yours have any QC issues? Mine had shamefully bad finishing on the wood scales and the sheath has stitching that came frayed and coming undone.
After some contemplating I ended up fixing all that myself instead of mailing it away for almost a month.
Oi! Did you get around to waterstoning it yet? I found that factory edge a little steep and toothy so it only lasted a few days. I'm fairly impressed with this steel it took slightly longer to work than my other high carbon knives. Usually that indicates a harder and tougher heat treatment I think.

Looks like a very good product and useful for camping and bugout gear.
Damn that is a nice knife. I’ve realized I like thin knives the best, thinner than 1/8th. Like the mora kansbol, I’d love to find a really thin kephart like that.

Desert Trekker it does get better! This knife! I got this for my birthday! Its the finest fixed blade ive ever used! Smooth bone red liners! Took it up to my 8000 arashiyama and this thing is the sharpest thing ive ever seen! So much control!

I've got a Kephart 5 and I love the blade. Quickly became one on my favorite knives.
After years of using knives and playing with scandis thinking that was the only grind for bushcraft I've changed. My favorite knife is my Ontario Sk5 Blackbird, kephart blades just WORK. Esee and few others do kephart high saber or flats which imho is the ultimate bushcraft blade style. Just my opinion 🤷 they freaking carve esp fine tasks thumb push cuts and also making bow drill boards.
Just got mine. It's a wood eating machine. I use axes for the larger splitting/chopping tasks.

I really like the BK Kephart for my go to camping knife it does everything I need in the field. I prepare my food ,perform basic camp task no problem plus even have cleaned fish. I don’t do any real serious wood work with mine I have bigger knives and a axe for that type stuff (plus a JX5 on preorder :)
Yes, these BK Kephart knives can get crazy sharp I start with leather strop green compound then to the other side white compound. When I’m done holly cow it’s crazy scary sharp the thinner blade stock seems to be easier for me to sharpen overall compare to other knives I own.
Great quality knife and if you value the history of this design it’s a must have for camping and bush crafters.
I really would like to pick up a cpm-154 stainless BK Kephart also for my collection, but there’s so many knives I want and only so much cash to go around :(
The clanking sound of the wood splitting is oddly satisfying.
I've looked at the Lon Humphreys Kephart and Condor has a budget version as well. A 3V Kephart is an interesting take. As always thanks for the insight!

Looks like a really great knife..thin, like a pocket knife, so a good slicer, and 3v makes it sturdy. I agree on the traditional bush craft thing. I do use some of the skills, but over all I am not spending months int he bush, just an occasional over nighter or a few days camping trip. I usually do the big knife small knife combo system, so this may just be the ultimate knife for that type system.

Hatchet, axe, tomahawk or machete + this knife or something similar + folding saw + small pocket knife like a Swiss Army Farmer. Done.

Chris...You like that. You should try Lon Humphreys Kephart that he has in 3V. That Brute De Forged knife comes in 2 grinds which are the flat convex and the SCANDI!

No, I intended that. I can't snap my fingers and get everything for free, nor do I have unlimited funds. But I was looking at it and also noticed some of his were under $200 whereas all the Barkies under $200 are sold out. Lon and Mike are tight so it's all good throwing him a bone too.

Thx for video. I hav that Kephart with a wooden handle & it is a grt knife in my opinion for camp cooking & game processing. I only baton for fire starting. I always carry a hatchet so the Kephart does all my knife chores. That thin blade gets scary sharp & keeps an edge for a long time. I hav enjoyed using it

If it's the flat ground 20 degree bevel yes I can see an argument. I had the 3v scandi version and it was great but just too thick. sold it. the FFG though, definitely a contender!

Hello. You always say you are not into bushcraft stuff. Well, a knife is a tool for kitchen, hunting, butchering, survival, tactical, art craft ... purposes. Ironically, your tests always so bushcraftish. Since you never test (maybe because it’s almost impossible) in a survival situation or any other field I mentioned. For any reason. So I believe aside from your view of yourself or your real life or past experiences, maybe militaristic, your videos are sort of backyard bush crafting. Still great because you review a vast variety of beautiful knives and you are very great and informative, and to some good point unbiased. So thank you very very much 🔪✨
Ps. If possible please review extrema ratio doberman iv. Looks really sexy to me but I’m not sure practically and your comments will help me a lot. That’s expensive to me.
I draw a distinction between "Common useful bushcraft skills" and "I can't tie my own shoelaces unless it's the way Kephart and Nessmuk did it so I can brag about it online". Bushcraft has become a silly religion where axes are more important than women and you only ever carry 10 things and one of those is a f***ing sail needle. Sorry...I live in 2019, not 1919.
The tests I do highlight key factors about the knife itself, not the skill of the user. It makes sense when people really look at it. I'm not doing reality TV.

Chris, the spine near the handle is intentionally more radiused than the forward portion to provide a more comfortable purchase on the thumb when handling the knife for close-in detailed work using the thumb in a pushing/steering action. Don't squre it off unless you like a more painfull bite into your thumb when using it like that. : )

ONE day I MIGHT have a Bark River...
I’m looking for a Bark River that’s roughly 3.5 inches long, between 0.08 and 0.13 inches thick, as an all-around work knife. I’m not into bush crafting, even though I respect the activity immensely. I’ve been eyeing either the Ultra-Lite Bushcrafter, the Mini Aurora, or the Kephart. Which of these three do you think would do best? Or is there another model I should consider?

LT Wright genesis has a much fuller, rounder handle. BRK is a little thinner and more oval shaped. Blade shape is slightly different between the two. Both are great.
You can find pine, ash, maple,birch in ohio. I know cuz I live here too. Just saying man. Ya lot of hard wood but not all and not to hard to find.

Get a knife with the name Kephart or Nessmuk and you too can be an expert couch woodsman . Make sure you get that blade spine nice and sharp so you can significantly reduce the blades primary function for fine work as a KNIFE .
Make sure that blade functions as a ferro rod striker first and a KNIFE second .
Never ever butcher and process a large game animal . Everyone with a brain knows a real "bushcrafter" understands a ferro rod takes an immense amount of skill to use .

I bought the kephart 5 from BR and haven't used it on a ferro rod yet, no need . I got a striker . But I will admit it is a heck of a slicer. I've cut up a couple chickens, a few squirrel , several crappie one ground hog and a whopper of a striper ( 24lb) plus several months of kitchen duty. I Iike it a lot. So far I've used the strop with the green compound and a ceramic rod to keep it 💯 % its been great. Ive used it for whittling . Basically damn good knife.

@@charlesmurphy7712 Bark River makes REALLY great knives . Using a strop with the green buffing compound is excellent and not many of us are using strops . I use a pig skin strop and flat butchers steel . Thanks for your reply and all the best .

What? Lol. It's nothing like a Genesis. Genesis is a "Kephart style" knife. There's nothing exclusive to any knifemaker about the Kephart design. This is much lighter and thinner like an actual Kephart. So if you are suggesting Bark River "Ripped off" LTWK (two companies I work with), you need to put down the bong.
