    Nice video! and folks, that is why the updated version of the p320 and the new p320s are not going to go off in your holster by accident. That trigger has to move for that gun to go off, and the video is very professionally done. Thank you

      I have done a very thorough mockup of the P320 with the update from now years back and the newer x5 and p320 legions, etc. And there is no possible way the gun will go off without pulling the trigger.

      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I should also point out that in his video he stated that the reset spring was broken and Sig, claimed that was the failure. In reality, Sig, had already discontinued the use of that part because they considered the striker reset spring redundant. Therefore, that claim does not hold any weight, and the reality of the situation is most likely that the trigger was pulled inadvertently.

    15:15 A possible explanation as to why Sig reduced the sear's vertical ledge was to keep sear/striker engagement more consistent. Unlike hammer fired guns which have all relevant engagement surfaces fixed to the frame (and therefore fixed relative to each other), striker-fired guns have to account for the slop between slide and frame as well as the striker's play within its channel. So every time the slide moves forward and the striker touches the sear their engagement may be slightly different from the last. This is why when adjusting overtravel on a striker fired gun it is important to push the slide down towards the frame while testing to make sure there is enough travel to achieve break even when engagement between sear and striker are at their maximum.
    By getting the striker's leg to touch the base of the sear, Sig limits how far down the striker's leg can go, ensuring that the contact area between the striker's leg and the sear's ledge has less variation, in turn leading to a more consistent trigger pull shot-to-shot. At least, this is my (somewhat) educated guess.
    I just came across your channel. Your presentation, explanations, and attention to detail complete with measurements are fantastic! I do hope that you consider covering aftermarket trigger parts like those from Grayguns and Apex and show how they differ from OEM. In any case, keep up the great work!

    Love your content. I remember nearly a decade or so ago when Sig was reinventing it’s brand, they said that the stopped thinking of themselves as a firearm company and instead started thinking of themselves as an engineering company that happens to make firearms.
    It seems like they were being truthful with that statement. They are constantly analyzing their designs and making improvements to their products. People like to hate on them by saying that they use their consumers as beta testers for first-gen products, but I don’t believe that’s their intention at all. When issues do arise, they address them, and also incorporate additional changes that aren’t related to the issue they’re addressing but that make their design better.
    I actually own a pre-upgrade P320 that I never sent it. And I don’t plan on ever sending it in.

    15:00 it seems clear that the striker now interacts with the base of the sear so that it can't be rotated laterally as easily, because the ventral face of the striker hits the dorsal face of the sear. Seems like a smart change to me

  • @jimsmith4618
    @jimsmith4618 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One of the biggest reasons the Sig and the S&W M&P will fire quicker and accidentally is because the are basically “Single Action”. The firing pin is cocked back under spring pressure. Once you touch the trigger, with very little pull and travel distance the firing pin is released forward. As compared to Glock style trigger safety on various other manufacturers, the trigger will not allow the firing pin to be released so quickly and also specifically the Glock, it’s a “Double Action” gun, the firing pin is set forward. You would have to release the Trigger safety and then pull the trigger back enough to cock the firing pin. This is one reason the triggers on Sig and M&P are lighter and quicker because of the reduced safety and travel distance. Something to keep in mind when you carry and fire these different guns.

      @@tedundercarriage8183 The m&p 2.0 two piece sear seams to just drop straight down like the old one. Besides glock (and obviously including the numerous glock clones), no other striker fired pistols I know of use the trigger pull to cock (or more accurately, finish cocking) the striker.
      I guess we could argue over exactly what constitutes something being a "glock clone", but I think you probably get the gist of my meaning.

  • @RileyBowman
    @RileyBowman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    @10:20 I think they changed the striker safety lever design to remove any possibility of the trigger safety lever somehow "bouncing up" and allowing it to contact and disengage the striker safety. Now it is strictly a function of the trigger's position. In other words, the trigger HAS to move rearward for the safety lever to move upward and contact the striker safety.

    Very interesting. I got into Sig chassis guns when they released the P250. I was a great gun if you were used to revolvers since it had a long trigger pull, but it was smooth as butter for a hammer fired gun. One of the selling points of the gun, over the other manufacturer's striker fired designs, was the ability to pull the trigger another time in the event of a light primer strike. "Second strike capability", I think they called it.
    It looks like the intention was to carry this over into a striker fired chassis format. I even remember the early P320 ads mentioning second strike capability. It appears that they fully dropped the entire concept with the P320 redesign and the term has entered the dust bin of history.

      Half the battle is finding creative ways to best showcase those small parts without interrupting the viewer.
      As far as your question goes, I’d have to see. Both pre and post FCU will accept either sear housing, but I would be very interested to see how much of the pre upgrade parts inside I could fit into the updated sear housing. I assume the safety lever is no problem, but the sear may have a problem since they did change the dimensions of the housing.
      I’ll check it out and get back to you there, maybe post it as a short here…

    I have to be honest, my previous request for you to compare operational similarities between the P320 & P365 were completely for personal vindication… I was in a deep debate with someone on one of your videos about the P365 having basically the same mechanics. Mainly about the striker safety lever setups. They’re basically the same except one is built into the striker itself and the other is a stand alone. Otherwise, they work the same exact way. Even the sear engagement with the striker and how it’s reset and released. Anyway, again… great work

    I purchased a new M-18 about 3 years ago. After your great breakdown, it confirmed that I do have the upgraded version. Thank you!
    Since that time i purchased a Canik Mete SFX. I must say that it seems to be a far better made gun. The trigger mechanism itself is worlds better and I am FAR more accurate with it. Everything functions very smooth and no slop. Not so for the M-18. I would trust the Canik over this Sig any day.
    I am unable to pull the M-18 trigger without a slight barrel drop. With the Canik, I get absolutely no movement. I can readily get all shots within a 2-3-inch circle at 40 feet. I'm lucky to get one shot within a 4-inch circle with the M-18. I have no idea how this gun could/should get a military contract. That said, I have ordered the skeletonized advanced trigger in hopes that it helps.
    I REALLY want to like my Sig M-18!

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! That’s a big difference. It could be that you just shoot better with the Canik, however, there should be no drop with a trigger pull on a loaded P320 (you will have significant slide movement with no magazine).
      Getting the skeletonized trigger will improve the overall feel of the pull but would not make impacts to the other things you mentioned.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, @neelandbob. Are you talking about the pre-upgrade? If yes, then the double click is just the break and reset. I’m not aware of a double click that occurs in between those stages. However, maybe I’m not understanding what you’re saying correctly. Anyway, thanks for watching!

    • @BuddyChryst
      @BuddyChryst 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, on some pistols, tolerances apparently made it so that it was possible to pull the trigger far enough to fire, but stop rearward travel before it hit the reset. Mine was one of them apparently. The upgrade obviously changed how the pistol resets, but the original double-click design had potential to result in failures. th-cam.com/video/kPfzvIswywY/w-d-xo.html

    It would fail to go into battery 90% of the time as the slide kept braking on the disconnector. The second time it was sent back to the wrong address as the person in charge of shipping keyed the wrong zip code it and sent in off into the hood somewhere according to my tracking.

    My biggest gripe is that SigUSA shouldve made a video exactly like this when they first started this "upgrade"
    I have slightly more faith in the new 320 FCUs, but at the time I was not convinced it was an upgrade at all. Considering I never plan to drop my 320 at the exact angle needed to discharge unintentionally, I do not plan to upgrade mine (granted such a problem should never have been in place to begin with, SigUSA does not get a free pass regardless)

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Shaz Arad, I’d have to agree with you, it’s odd they never truly broke it down considering they wanted to convince people to do the “upgrade”. Although, I do consider lots of the stuff they did actual upgrades, because if the drop safety issue had never happened, I feel lots of us in the community would have jumped at doing them. (I mean just getting rid of the tiny spring for the safety lever was such a great idea).
      Either way, if you’re not looking to do the VUP, just go get the lightened trigger and the -30 degree drop issue goes away.

      I personally would. The problem people are having seems to be based on the trigger being pulled, which can happen on any pistol with no MS. The gun doesn’t know it’s “not the best time” so to speak, it just knows the trigger is pulled a certain distance. That distance is (unless you modify) the same as most other pistols too.
      The only advice I could really provide you is kind of boilerplate, it’s that just like everything else, make sure your holster is made for this pistol, make sure it’s being used correctly, and that you practice working with it. It will be as safe as any other gun you treat with respect.
      Another bit of advice I give people that are interested in picking up the P320 but are unsure…is that you can purchase the manual safety version and later on with a very simple swap of a part you can have the non-manual version. (Once you get comfortable).
      By the way, I’m just finishing up a video specifically on one of the major gripes people have regarding the striker safety lever, to kind of clarify what’s happening there. So if you’ve subscribed, then you’ll be notified when it’s posted (hopefully in a few days).
      Anyway, thanks for watching!

      I have a few p320s, but I’ve been reading about all these lawsuits regarding the pistol going off without a trigger pull. I’ve been carrying one for 2 years no issues. I love my p320….some people criticize the p320 by saying if the bottom of the striker brakes the firing pin will strike the primer. I would think the chances of that happening are like zero. I do however have it on the back of my mind because the only lawsuits you hear about are with this weapon. I wonder why. I am always a bit nervous when I remove my holster from my belt. I don’t want to blow my Johnson either.

    Awesome man! Do you think they decreased the the durability/longevity of the pistol with all the lightening cuts?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! As far as durability goes…I don’t think so. I’ll use the striker as an example…The forces we put on the striker run the length of it. (Ie: spring tension, primer ignition, reset). The forces are distributed forward and back on the striker body only.
      However, if we were talking about shear strength, where there is force coming DOWN onto the strikers circumference, then I would say “yes, definitely”. But that’s not the case here.
      For everything else, the types of forces exerted are way too minimal to cause malfunction I think, especially if they only move in a specifically engineered way.
      That’s not to say that parts can’t fail altogether, since all moving parts experience stress on any gun, but it’s also easy to “over engineer” a part…ie, they could use titanium parts, but it’s not required if steel will do the same job and that steels’ critical stress points are sufficient for the amount of use and pressures we put on them.
      I guess I went on a tangent here, but I hope that answers the question, lol.

      @@SIGMECHANICS Thank you so much! I was just worried they decreased the lifespan of those parts, but what you said makes total sense. I appreciate the reply!

    So I bought the 320 right when they came out and didnt even hear till this video that there was an upgrade. Now I really like the way mine shoots and im fairly proficient with it. How does the upgrade feel compared to the original for shooting? Better or worse? Will it last longer? Will it feel like im shooting a different gun?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it loses a bit in the “crispy-ness” of the break, but makes up for it with a smoother feeling “lighter” trigger. If you’re not sure I’d recommend going to any range and asking to shoot it. You can make a more informed decision at that point since it would be hard to convey in words the differences.

      @cat_puncher8539 much appreciated! Glad to have earned a sub! I leave my notifications on because I really enjoy interacting with this community.
      I’m honestly surprised you haven’t heard about the upgrade, it’s free but the downside is you have to FFL it to Sig, so if it’s your only gun it feels like forever.

    after watching many P320 videos and reviews i wonder is there is ANY actual difference between the FCU for different P320 models. Everyone OOHs&AAHs about Legion or X5 Comp but not so much for the M17/m18 OR ANY MODEL UNDER $1,000.
    Extra time buffing parts?

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s no difference what-so-ever, the Legion specifically did have the manual safety trigger bar installed from the factory. It looked slightly different, but ultimately was the same. However, there is no difference. It all comes down to the build on the outside because the FCU and internals are all the same.

    I have watched all of your videos as I purchased a P320 Compact a bit ago. When I purchased it I was unaware of the issues that had been spoken about with dropping the weapon and now more recently the weapon AD in holsters. Since I live in MA I was forced to purchase the MA compliant version of this firearm with a manual thumb safety. Does this safety in fact stop the weapon from AD during drop and during holstering and transporting the weapon (or while it is in motion)? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was concerned once I started researching it. Your videos make me feel safe in the purchase but I wanted to ask this question.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is yes and no. The drop safety issue from 2017 was resolved by simply lightening the weight of the trigger. However, it can also be said that having a manual safety installed would assist in preventing a discharged if dropped, but it is not necessarily the sole reason. It would be a good addition to the safety.

      @@SIGMECHANICS So I ran about 500 rounds through it. I have several misfires in the first 200 rounds and I was actually at the range at Sig Sauer Experience Center which is close to my house and the guy told me that was normal. I’ve had no ND or AD while carry the pistol or otherwise and the safety works when pulling the trigger…So far so good. I did find this pistol packs quite a wallop compared to a Glock 19 or even a Sig 2022…Thing has a kick.

    The traditional Sig style trigger is just too heavy for this new design P320. you could clearly see it moved back when dropped. I think this might be the only problem with the Pre P320 design.

    • @SIGMECHANICS
      @SIGMECHANICS  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Leo KF, according to Sig, this WAS the only problem. They only had to lighten the trigger and it would no longer replicate the problem. Just so happens they had more features in the military model that they the. integrated into the upgrade later on. This included the disconnect as well as lightened striker if I recall correctly.
