  • I had about half of the birds out of my last hatch just disappear. I am not sure if I have a predator problem or if they somehow just got out. Either way, it looks like I need to rethink my brooder box.

    A lot of times this time of year if you usually find one rat snake you’ll find 3+ if you look around. They’re getting ready to hibernate and they’ll yard up together. Those snakes this time of year will eat everything they can get to getting ready for the long season of not eating so I’m guessing snakes

    I have quail that are around 4months old and it's getting colder at night was 1° celsius Tonight. I went out to check on the quail and they were all puffed up and shivering, I brought out the old heat lamp and that helped but now they've been up all night because of the light. What should I do? I was thinking of getting a very low powered bulb to keep the water from freezing, and keeping the hutch warm?

    I lost ½ of my newly hatched quail. a few every day, and I am at a loss of what is happening. 3 more yesterday and another this morning. They are in a larger brooder box with a heat source at each end and the feed and water in the middle, in the house. They have grit, food, and water.

    I wonder if it could have been rats. Maybe you could affix that liner to four posts; maybe keep the one wooded side, keeping the screen tops. I don't know how flimsy it is but you maybe have to bulk up the edge with wood. You could then also use it for your meat chickens too. You could have a metal roof and even put heat lamps, if needed, on top of the lids. Just an idea. Sorry about your birds. Have a blessed day.

    I built my brooder from plans and video from Terry at Coturnix Corner and I modified mine with legs after finding a small black snake on top of the poop pan trying to come through the 1/2” mesh to get my 3 week old quail. So whoever said that snakes can’t stand ammonia is wrong because he was on top of the poop tray and it was loaded.

    My idea is get two of those extra extra large totes and use those for the first week just split your birds up between the two of them I realize it means double most everything but it’s quick and easy and you don’t have to spend a lot of time building something and when you’re not brooding you can stack them together and put them away

    Trail camera would work for the next batch. Then you can catch it all in the act. Hopefully, it could be set far enough away to catch it instead of constantly catching the quail chicks moving around. We used one for our poultry for a fox problem.

    make a brooder with 1/2" coated wire on the bottom it works awesome. my brooder is 3'x2' and we keep an oil drip pan under it for a poop tray. the first 4-5 days i put shelf liner on about 1/2 of the wire to let them get off of it and used to it. our whole quail setup is in a room under our side porch we have stacked trays with poop pans. takes 15 mins to clean the trays for 100-150 birds every 4-5 days.

    building a brooder. I simply use 1/2 inch plywood ( not osb ) then use tin or metal flashing on the top outside edge and outside corners. The metal stops most climbers. For snakes climbing up the sides use two strips of metal banding about an inch apart then connect the top band to an electric fencer and the lower one to ground. As long as the area don't get wet the banding can be fastened directly to the wood. Also, use the quail droppings outside around your shed on the ground. Snakes can't stand ammonia

    Just an idea: set up a trail cam or WiFi security cam in your brooding area before making maybe unnecessary changes. Next brooding cycle review the footage and it may surprise you what you may find out. I personally use the wifi security cam ( $19.99 Walmart ) and found all sorts of stuff out. Got the idea from Nature: spy in the wild episode. Hope this helps

    Maybe you can build another box that's half the width and split it into 2, set it on either side of the room up on stilts with front loader doors. I know it'll take twice as many heat lamps but it'll remain easy to maintain as it's the same space as before, less back breaking because it's raised up and that might be your solution.

    Wow how crazy!

  • @Keyspoet27
    @Keyspoet27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry for your losses - that sucks.
    I've just started with my first batch of quail, starting with 20 jumbo brown babies, three days old when I got them. I lost one the day after bringing them home, but everyone else is doing great, and they were two weeks old yesterday, so we've made it through the most crucial period.
    My next step is building the breeding and grow out pens, which should go fairly quickly, and I'm building them to be both rat-proof and snake-proof, since I'll be raising them inside over the winter. I'm a former certified picture framer, so well acquainted and experienced with woodworking; and a big believer in building to a higher standard than strictly necessary, which should cover contingencies, and hopefully result in fewer losses overall.
    If I do move them outside, they'll be in a greenhouse, so still should be safe from larger predators. And my hope is to have my five adult rabbits in the same greenhouse, along with a 6' x 15" tank for my aquaponic system, along with a small masonry heater, so the greenhouse should keep a fairly stable temperature well above freezing. At least that's my fervent hope.
    Best of luck going forward.

    • @KasumiRose77
      @KasumiRose77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They should be ok together. It's called a rooster box or cage. I keep my Roo's together when not breeding also. They did peck each other at first but they didn't rip each other up. The only thing I can figure is your roo cage needs to be pretty big so they can run away from each other. If I see one being overly aggressive to the others, he will wind up in my freezer and exit my breeding program.

      Hi there, I keep my quails in the Greenhouse, no issues so far 🤞

    • @KasumiRose77
      @KasumiRose77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They get experimenting with their wings and go on voyages and find the top, then land hard. The only way I can figure to solve that is have a really tall cage they are in at they can without hitting the top or have a shorter one. About a foot tall.
      I keep my infants until 2-3 weeks in a ten gallon fish tank with a cage wire lid that's clamped just incase. Then I move them to a canary cage that's 2 feet tall. My adults are also in the same cages but there's fewer of them in there, naturally. The only time the adults got the top of the cage is if they are trying to get away from another bird being mean and pecking... Which then needs taken care of.

    I am guessing with your description, it's much more of a hard to except reason, I am talking about the 2 legged kind. Losing that many birds without the cover being jostled or a couple running around or feathers everywhere, means it wasn't a cat or something big and you would have to have more than 5 snakes in a short time, and that is not really likely at all, Rats would not remove them or kill that many....... So it leaves the hard to except answer in my book!
